Well, Really. Joining a public server isn't the very ideal thing to do. People aren't very considerate of the limitations the servers have right now, so all it takes is one person to screw everything up. Resources aren't that big of a deal. You do /iron to get iron. Wood and stone are infinite as always.
With that said, if you have a good private server, it's one of the greatest things. I had lotsa fun just building with one person.
I think notch said he'd add canal type doors. Can't remember where. But he should really just make the regular doors allow things to pass through them, like red dust and minecart tracks.
I hate that most people think like this:"Hurr, this is survival, i need to SURVIVE, i'll steal, kill and destroy" :sad.gif:
Why cannot people be nice?
I will NEVER attack anyone unless they run to me with a sword/attack me first,
I will NEVER take anything from a chest i don't own,
i will NEVER go into a base/home/castle unless the owner is inside and gives me permission and
i will NEVER set forest fires.
4 rules of a gentlemanly minesurviver.

If I wanted to be "nice" I'd join a Creative mode server (which I do, btw, nothing wrong with it).
Killing and stealing will be part of SMP. That's a given, and they are sandbox elements just as much as building and crafting are. I'm not going to go around killing and stealing at whim, I'll probably do it if it greatly benefits me or protects me. I'm also not going to "grief" unless it gives me an advantage. I'm not the type of person that destroys things just because I can. I do things if they give me an edge over another, and that only makes sense in a survival game.
Killing and stealing adds a whole new dimension to the game and gives a point for traps, building huge castles, defense, and territory control. Without these elements, I wouldn't even bother with single multiplayer. You can be "nice" and still kill and steal in a game. It just depends on your viewpoint versus their viewpoint.
Personally, I've been waiting for a survival type game like this for my entire life. Nothing like this, to my knowledge, has ever been accomplished, and by that I mean a sandbox world with PvP combat, crafting and territory control.
I was going to make a TLDR post but I'm just going to summarize it up.
If you want to build stuff and be in a community and organize wars or organize build projects then you already probably have a private server (or one with heavy moderation) in mind where most of this stuff is already done. Great, none of this probably concerns you because you know they're already going to give you what you want from wherever you visit.
If you want to be a thief/murderer most high populated/heavily moderated servers will probably not allow this and you'll have to do your little shtick in a server where this is allowed. Unfortunately for you these servers aren't heavily moderated and most of the people there are trying to grief for annoyance's sake, not trying to be a thief/murderer, so now you're going to have nothing to steal (nobody has bothered to build/craft anything worth such an act or it's already gone) and the only people you can kill really don't care and will simply respawn and go back to being obnoxious.
If you're excited about PvP in whatever private server you go to then great, have fun. If you're excited about PvPing others in a public server then please realize you won't be some valiant knight or some deadly assassin like you're undoubtedly fantasizing yourself as becoming, you're simply going to be dropped in a pit of other people who had the exact same hopes with nothing notable on the landscape and nothing worth stealing, more than likely devolving into some giant stone sword fight where nothing is ever accomplished.
I think it's important that a server has its own goals. Some will be as you accurately describe. That there will be no pvp, and logically you probably wont even be able to kill anybody because of that. You just build together. No one will be trying to become an assassin when there is no one to assassinate.
I think most people are wussies when it comes to 'supposed griefing'. Aren't people interested in castle warfare? pillaging? Assassinations? For people to just go "HARRR LETS BUILD PETER GRIFFINS IN SURVIVAL BECAUSE IT'S MORE OF A CHALLENGE" It's naive.
Those things won't happen unless they are strictly organized. 99% of the time it will be some random guy in another timezone entering your base when you are logged off, breaking all your chests, knocking holes in your walls, filling rooms with lava, or using dynamite to destroy structures that no doubt took you weeks to build, all while justifying it by saying you had it coming for not living out of a 4x6 shack in the bottom of a cave like they do.
Anyone who thinks there is going to be anything approaching face-to-face battles or castle warfare, or even the ability to defend your base without moderators is going to be in for a rude awakening.
Assuming Survival will be anything like creative. In survival you're probably not going to build pretty structures that replicate the Taj Mahal. And it's perfectly acceptable to have organized play, in the sense that moderators are on at the time to direct the game. Plus, assuming you have help, castles and other structures wont take that long to complete. So yeah, in survival it's survival, not to boast how pretty your structure is.

They accuse you of being a moron if you do anything they personally disagree with, even if it's not against the rules. Then they ban you. Also, they tend to be very abusive on their forums, which is why I'm not there. It's not professional to call everyone you don't like a dumbass.
Professional or not it's not like they have a duty to the community, they don't owe you a friendly service. You can make a server with a certain niche in mind,
MOD EDIT: Don't try to rile people that are already upset.
Ehh, can someone from the old server explain the rules or something? It's apparent that a twig is more helpful than most the new people there.
The rules are
1: Don't be dumb.
2: Don't ask to be promoted, wait for aidan.
3: RP.
4: RP some more.
5: Don't take all the sand.
6: Don't drop the soap.
7: Don't take the tree trunks without taking the leaves.
Aidan probably has a few serious ones.
I set Liam_12's rank to 0 for using an autoclicker, I banned Omalley for griefing. I banned Rangerblood for placing a water source and attempting to flood the map.
Added more trees and plants. Around 3k more plants and 1k more trees.
That's not what I was really getting at. I was saying for people who were on the old server, don't know how the old rules differ from the new system, general rules like don't be retarded don't help.

I'd like to apply, simply to make epic structures with other level headed players.
