Let me summarize the 4,000 youtube comments by demographic for you:

Trolls/Dyslexics - **** YOGSCAST
College Goers/Young Adults - Everyone was drunk, who gives a ****?
Adults - Very mature/professional reply guys, in the absence of further evidence, I think Notch should apologize.
ADD Sufferers - WHERE DID SIMON'S BEARD GO?!
Exactly.
....So what did happen to Simon's beard?
(I jest...)

I'm Jonathan Kent, candidate for Captain of a steampunk flying death fortress, and I approve of this idea.

You sir, have achieved Scotty-Factor 10

......As soon as someone finishes a SAM missile mod.
No one is safe now

Otherwise, so very cool. Definitely a good idea!

Aside from the fact that it definitely fits with Minecraft, I'm all for animals that are biome specific and definitely all for animals that have more uses than just harvesting.
So both together; instant win.
And your graphics are very very cool too.
You win diamonds;

Each helmet would be, as suggested, a ring of material with a glass center
EG (leather) diving hlemet = 2 times breathable air and has a view overlay.
= 3 times breathable air and a clear view
= 5 times the breathable air, clear view
= 10 times breathable air, possibly some view enhancement to make it easier to see.
Being diamond it makes sense to me for it to be a highly useful item, a cut above all else, due to its rarity.

That is an enormously brilliant concept.
I will surely add this to my growing repertoire of construction methods.

I hope thats part of future development, especially the idea of different trees and plants (Pine forests and swamp ferns? those would be amazing...)
I also agree that being able to either pick a 100% random world, or be more specific about the %'s of biome distribution would also be very cool.
In short and to avoid confusion; yes its Alpha and in an amazing state for a game in Alpha, these are just my agreements and thoughts as to how the biome system could be further developed finished and polished.

Do you intend to do GUI or Armor or Item re-textures for this pack?

Strangely, it seems that almost no mobs, if any, spawn at this altitude.
Could the mechanic be working in reverse as you go upwards from ground level?

The first thing I thought of when playing Minecraft was MYST.
Ever since playing MYST/riVen/Exile I've always wanted to write my own linking books.
So... marry Minecraft to MYST? I approve.
How? not sure.
But I might be able to supply a texture pack. Real life permitting.

Well we have powered mine-carts, and hot air is always available...
This means Airships running on coal engines, and of course the ever popular glider idea are not totally out of the realm of possibility depending on your perspective.

Whenever I build some sort of air creation in SMP half of my brain is devoted to wishing it could actually fly, just by attaching the appropriate parts to make the superstructure come to life....
Well, if it doesn't go in officially maybe as a mod some sweet day.......?

I'm not that far along with Java yet. Sadly.
Another pro of this? Assuming server masters do their best to foster interconnection you basically end up with a massive number of varied and interesting servers with infinite world maps that you can go between by stepping through a stone ring leaving you with this tremendously immense always accessible universe.....

Well, if we are continuing this Stargate analogy (which I LOVE), setup a permissions system.
IE give the gate an Iris, but more sensitive;
A dialed gate can be setup to;
*allow or not allow passage of materials from other worlds
*allow or not allow passage of tools
*allow or not allow 'guests'
**To expound on that, this setting just goes all out like Stargate and won't allow you to access to servers gate unless you are somehow registered with the server on a white-list.
A dial-ING gate can also be setup to;
*allow or not allow passage of materials
*allow or not allow passage of tools
Unlike Stargate trying to enter, say, a server that doesn't allow materials, will not 'splat' you on the iris, it just kicks you back to the gate you came from with a message to the effect of "this gate only accepts incoming travelers with no blocks in inventory"
On a side note, while the con of this is that servers would have to have varying strictness based on griefers the pro is that server owners could actually setup servers *specifically* for total strip mining in order to fuel a more pristine world with fewer mines and deforestation.
So ideally, servers who want to prevent strip mining setup their gates not to allow material passage out, but allow it in so that somewhere out there worlds can be made totally for mining.
I can see it now, throw up a server with no lockouts and few rules, make the Stargate itself indestructible, make its gate fully open, and set the server to auto-restart with a new random terrain every so many days.
Instant mine-world.
