There're additional complications to large servers going down. All of those players will be looking for a new server to call home. Whereas in the past, a large playerbase was sought after for the amount of server support, there's now the threat that the communities that hovered around the large servers like moths to a light will suddenly not have their server.
Due to this, it will put additional stress on servers that have trouble paying in the first place. Servers expand to meet the needs of the playerbase, and the playerbase responds by sometimes helping to expand the servers via donations, volunteer work, etc. Since none of this can be rewarded anymore, there's an incredible chop in incentive to do so. Thus, small servers will not be able to grow at the rates that they used to, AND have to deal with the stress of a larger, lower quality playerbase.
These players are expecting the fruits of money. The quality work that they're used to, the hundreds of dollars that flowed into some servers was visible in the quality of the gameplay experience. This was not achieved in a day, so not only do you have many low quality players flooding into smaller servers, but they have higher expectations and a lower incentive to volunteer and donate due to the new bars put up to these sorts of things.
Think before you say 'it's worth it'; It isn't.

Hello, I'm Sabretori. I'm currently working on a small Minecraft based MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) which is kind-of like an MMO.
The goal of this MUD/MMO is to be as simple and grindy as possible. Essentially the right clicker of MCMUDs, with a clean and simple world with clearly defined skills, quests, dungeons, and games. This is inspired by RuneScape.
The project is nowhere near production playable yet, so be aware you may have very few things to do or test.
I want people who are capable of giving feedback and insight into the project. Applicants should be passionate about grind-focused gameplay and the benefits of game balance. Main problem is server costs, I'm likely going to end up buying a server instead of renting. It's slightly more expensive but I won't have to worry about renting.
Found one I like, no definitive ETA.

I'd give it a month, now it's more of a time/funding thing. I'm sure once I get it rolling those things aren't going to be too much of an issue... As it stands, I don't have a consistent enough income (bi-weekly) to safely spend a lot in one sitting.
In the meantime, I'd suggest going somewhere to play for a bit. The staff have approached me about starting up the server again personally, so it's never been off my radar.
Will update with a time frame in the coming month.

As I likely mentioned before, it's one of my final college semesters and the work is bogging my time down to an extreme degree. Since the project is mainly myself, and the other administrators are going through similar things, I don't want to leave it up if I can't fix problems. I'm a fanatic about fair play, so that's why it's taking so long for the project to go back up...
My original ETA was based on me not having too much work at the time. Since then, the work has only gotten tougher and my financial situation is more stressed right now, so in the meantime I cut the test server's power to 1/4 to just make sure everything's working and stuff. I've also been experimenting with more adventure-style stuff and those testers who have seen it so far have given some small amount of positive feedback.
Summary: Ayy Mirage will take longer, find other servers and meet you back here when it re-opens.

Copper and Tin ores should give out 14.2 exp respectively, it's difficult to find out how to edit the files to specify data values when the only inputs are Bukkit material values. This should be fixed in a near update as data values are required for the custom ores.
In addition to that change, I've also modified the block whitelist. Feel free to punch and break any blocks around you in order to test if the antibuild whitelist is working.
