Yeah, not a whole lot of people knew about it, apparently. Also it seemed that most people's machines couldn't handle it.
Whenever I was in a SMP server somewhere, I would say something along the lines of "wow, shift+F2 highlighhts nearby ores", and then 30 seconds later a bunch of people suddenly log out for several minutes. Good stuff.
It's difficult to explain, but basically, when you create a portal to the nether, it's quite possible that the corresponding location in the nether where your new portal would spawn is blocked. When that happens, the game will look for a nearby safe location to put your portal (and in your case, it was an isolated empty chamber surrounded by solid netherrack).
The problem is when you now go through the portal to get back to the real world. The game will try to calculate where to spit you out in the real world from THIS portal's location. Also, keep in mind that nether movement is 8:1 to real world movement. So if your nether portal got moved 30 spaces away from where it should have been, then when you go back through to the real world, you'll end up 240 spaces away from where you'd expect!
As for constantly being sent back to that exact same spot, it simply means that your new portals were also "blocked" when they tried to send you, so you get dumped back to the original spot the game found for you. Even if you moved your new portal 100 blocks away in the real world, when you try to get to the nether, you'll only have really changed your location about 12 blocks. Meaning there's a very good chance whatever was blocking you in the first place is still there.
tl;dr: Find a location far away from your original portal site and try again.
It all just depends on the server. There are plenty of servers out there that don't lag much/at all, you just have to find them. The current server I play on has a huge world (~6GB last I heard), and even with 10+ players, the lag isn't too bad.
Yes, I'm not sure why it is, but Spiders seem to be the only mobs that can "see" you through any walls. I'm not sure if it's a glitch or intentional.
The overall effect is that they often will wait on your roof all night ("following" your movements throughout the house) so that they can pounce on you as soon as you leave.
Your best solution is to build your walls with a slight overhang near the top, this will stop spiders from being able to completely scale your walls and reach your roof.
While I appreciate the work he does, I've found that Notch's suprises tend to be . . . underwhelming. He did one an update or three ago, and I seem to recall it not being particularly spectacular. I also think his unique Deadmau5 skin was announced in a similar way in public.
This. I'm not holding my breath for anything good that pertains to your average Minecraft user.
Jeb getting reassigned and Notch is the only person working on Minecraft now?
I guess we can expect an update (around the time Half-Life 2: Episode 3 is released) that adds a single bugged item that is only found rarely in dungeons.
Since Alpha. Don't remember the exact version number, but I know the first "big" update I witnessed was the addition of boats and cacti, so it was sometime before 1.0.6 was released.

Honestly, that's the most likely scenario.
