I just found out about a program called Excelsior JET for compiling Java applications to native machine code.
I did notice a definite increase in startup time, which is why I'm posting this - does anyone know how to performance-test a Minecraft server? It would be nice to see how this compares to the Java server with lots of players online and on low-end machines.
The only downside is that it takes up more disk space - about 70MB for the server, libraries, and compiled Java runtime. I didn't try using Bukkit, but it should be possible because JET supports dynamic class loading.
If enough people want it, I could build some stuff (roads, villages, etc...) seeing as I got creative mode...
Also (this is directed to Jacob_), do you want me to moderate and enforce the lack of rules, or would my presence be counter-intuitive?
Just watch for people hacking or using xray (this is difficult to detect.)
I noticed that the server constantly uses the hard disk, even when nobody is online. Is this really necessary? I'm using amazon hosting and I get charged for disk I/O, so obviously I'm trying to use the HD as little as possible.
Edit: I just noticed - top says the server is using 716mb of virtual memory! milkAdmin says it's only using 93mb, and java is limited to 512m - so this shouldn't be happening, right?
And I think the size of the land sounds a bit small. It should be something like 750 radius, otherwise you will have an all out war of people trying to find a place to shelter.
I like the sound of this server :biggrin.gif:

Added! I'll increase the map size if it's too small.

Added, you posted while I was adding the other guy :tongue.gif:
Welcome to the server!
Also, I've been working on decreasing the lag. Tell me if it gets any better.

And I've played faction servers before, and I liked them, but I still don't think it compares to total anarchy. This is the server I'm trying to recreate, if you're interested: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/109263-total-freedom-247-no-rules-no-whitelist/

I like it! Although I've never heard of a server world having an official name before, so I'm not sure where I would put it.

lordkaiser, that sounds like a problem on your end. Can you get on any other beta servers?
