Aug 27, 2011InsanityBringer posted a message on PAX Party! If there's no old true old world compatibility I will not upgrade until someone's written a nostalgia mod. I think I recall hearing (in the stream, even!) that you can still load and play old worlds though, to an extent.Posted in: News

I wish they were though for previously-mentioned reasons... -
Aug 27, 2011InsanityBringer posted a message on PAX Party!Early release? If this isn't a lie, I guess it'll give me time to confirm how much work The Nostalgia project will be :tongue.gif:Posted in: News
In a more serious note, if XP was to make it into this release I guess it would give me an idea of whether Mojang played their cards right when it comes to the entire experience system. My opinion on the XP system has always been biased on whether or not Notch and Mojang will play their cards right considering it and make it actually fun. I'm currently a bit afraid because they said "you lose your items" at one point without confirming whether they get scattered or not. If they don't get scattered, this will kill the entire system for me :/
Maybe, I can finally get a chance to test whether or not the hunger system is actually usable or not, but I'm not really full of confidence yet... -
Aug 27, 2011InsanityBringer posted a message on PAX Party!Excited about most of the updates, but not very happy about the food system. It encourages camping way too much and just feels too weak. If we can't disable it, we better get direct healing items, like potions and the like.Posted in: News

Aug 24, 2011InsanityBringer posted a message on An Interview With Jeb!A nostalgia mod will be made within a few weeks of the release, I just know it. If the mode system proves generic enough that an API can be built and used to quickly make an easy way to add additional game modes beyond survival and creative, It's almost impossible to deny that a nostalgia mod will be created on a timely basis after the release.Posted in: News
(and that's not because I'm currently planning out one (expect no biomes x to be very different in 1.8 :P))
But, with all that nostalgia, it seems like I'm rejecting the future of Minecraft. The reality is that I am not, but I do have like the simpler gameplay we have right now. NPC villages will fill up a large gap within the minecraft world (because seriously, you can travel a place the size of the US and never encounter anything man-made, which is weird), XP will actually be decent if Mojang plays their cards right, Endermen are about the most awesome mob I've seen (The creepers suck as a scary mob, seriously. Worst way to do a "scary" mob, may as well have just added a screamer), Rivers fill much needed gaps also, deep oceans have the potential to be really awesome (the current oceans barely qualify as oceans), and performance updates. Performance updates are awesome, but I am happy that they are keeping the treasure chamber dungeons as is. I've always liked finding those. Also, Hunger doesn't really interest me (I'd rather play with it off but I can live with it on), but I guess I could get used to it given the extreme ease of finding food in minecraft. (that is, until spawns are rewritten and animals don't despawn or respawn, which will probably be changed with said nostalgia project instantly :P) -
Jul 20, 2011InsanityBringer posted a message on Notch Reveals Leveling and PermadeathPosted in: NewsThe at heart part is what bothers me. That was what Notch originally wanted the focus to be, not the general backing.
I generally agree with this, but I must admit, however, when I was making The Survival Mode That Wasn't (see this), that the focus actually dropped from building (because there's no longer a need for shelter) to exploring, mining, and when I get the overworld mobs in, fighting. In fact, in the days of Survival Test I would rarely build because there was no real need to.
But, considering that creative came first, and many of the block types that we still commonly use came from that, it's hard to disagree that building was still a strong aspect early in development. I think it was just masked for a little bit, however, by other mechanics like those in survival test and even in the ideas I was trying to implement with my mod. -

Jul 20, 2011InsanityBringer posted a message on Notch Reveals Leveling and PermadeathTo be honest, my actual opinion over the level stuff is "I'll like it if it's implemented well". While I do have concern for the new food system (actually, I shouldn't have any concern really, given how easy it is to get food within the game), xp and leveling could come off as a very nice feature, giving the player a bit more reason to actually fight crap (outside of getting items), and it kinda also works as a virtual progress meter (though, honestly, I find that creations serve as an even more interesting progress meter -- I just love watching my survival main houses grow and grow). Permadeath -- in the sense of just losing all of your levels when you die -- might also add to the fair challenge of the thing. Sure, you could recover your shiny suit of diamond armor, assuming that your items still toss (I presume they will), but you'll still be level one. Hopefully they won't add super-powered monsters that can crush you with their finger without trying, should you need to get your stuff from the corpse, but at the same time, things will probably start being stronger than you, and you need to advance again. This is much more fair than just instantly deleting the level. For example, my World1, started in August of last year, has many many structures I just love building, tweaking, and upgrading. If I was to make an accidental fall or lavadive, I wouldn't want all of my structures gone just because I made a minor mistake.Posted in: News
But, everyone's different, and that's why the option to delete your level on death is present. Play how you want, I think this is what minecraft encourages, actually. -
Jul 20, 2011InsanityBringer posted a message on Notch Reveals Leveling and PermadeathI think people are really just taking this too seriously.Posted in: News
I'm kinda glad that it's been hinted that 1.8 will be the update that modding update. Obviously a lot of popular, and a lot of unpopular things are coming. It seems less and less like people can actually agree on what features people like (just listen to the intelligent folks here calling people "wimps" and threatening to kill them simply because they might influence mojang to make something not work the way *they* want, and also listen to the people like me stating "I hope it's optional"). Modding just might be able to close this gap once and for all. -
Jul 20, 2011InsanityBringer posted a message on Notch Reveals Leveling and PermadeathWow. This is the greatest show of intelligence I have ever seen.Posted in: News
For the morons arguing that "you whiners will ruin it for us!", I don't ****ing see how a simple button labeled something like "Hardcore mode: Enabled" in the options menu is "ruining" it for you. If the button is so absolutely devastating to your soul that you can't possibly to hope to ever play the game again without just dying over the fact that a feature is optional, Modding stuff's coming soon so just turn it off! -
Jun 16, 2011InsanityBringer posted a message on Pistons: Work In ProgressIt'd be interesting if they created a piston of arbitrary length, with the ability to make a surface that can be larger than just 1x1, it could create some interesting things like elevators that aren't glitches, and the like. That's actually really easy to recreate though: I just need to find a new game. It's happened with TF2, Minecraft, and many other games.

I'll look into the slider issue though. A bit strange, since the code for poking it in there hasn't changed any.

Anyways, I uploaded a new version which fixes a few textures missing due to differences between the way minecraft loads textures out of zips and folders.

With this release, almost all of the terrain textures have been done. There are still a few missing ones, but there aren't all that many, you probably won't notice in average gameplay.
For your viewing pleasure, I present a picture from kab's test track:

Actually, even starting up a new level in 1.1.2_01 can instantly lead to a stack overflow, but I haven't traced the exact origin to see if it's the leaves.

Of course, this is kind of a problem since there isn't a server version.

Procedural textures still render strangely, I think, but it's easy enough to turn them off.
Also, about the spawner issue, I've reported it before, but obviously it's still around. It's almost impossible to trigger when you want it to, though. It doesn't work on all spawners.
Best bet is to take a map that has lots of spawners like From Ashes and get to breaking.

It is admittedly a neat effect, but it's kind of buggy.
