Minecraft can be weird like that, while I hate macs, it probably isnt the reason why it's slowing down, and yes the imac is EXTREMELY overpriced for what you get(halve the price, give or take 100 dollars and you can get way better if you build your own pc, or even a prebuilt. and if you really want osx, make a hackintosh), It should still be able to run minecraft, however minecraft can be very.... fickle, on really old computers it can run great, whereas on high end computers it will run mediocre. Idk.
Hm.. I don't know of any Motherboards that will have enough DIMM slots or even a CPU that will support that much RAM.
Java doesn't see Minecraft as a Heavy 3D game so it uses the Crappy Intel GPU, so you have to find out how to make Minecraft use the 6770 instead of the Integrated one.
