There's the problem. You and your friend simply don't have fast enough internet to get a good connection to each other. I would recommend buying a Minecraft server from a host. Then your friend and you can get a very good experience and not have to worry about lag.

I know that it may seem hard to use a host at first, but there are a lot of videos on YouTube on how to use them.
I can't really recommend any because it would seem bias and I don't do bias :P Just look for a host with a nice web interface and price.

posted a message on Looking for 2 - 4 players LAN minigames maps (no server)
Hello,

I am in a house with very slow internet and playing on servers is impossible. My friends and I here all want to play Minecraft together and survival is just boring.

I am looking for 2 - 4 players LAN minigames maps.

So far we have played;
The walls,
Super craft bros brawl.

Could you guys point us in the right direction by posting some LAN minigames maps?

Thanks

I am not one to judge, and I have no experience about being a father but I can safely say, that being a father is a bigger job than a game server.

If he can juggle being a father, I applaud him. A game server is much easier to manage than being a father.

$10 will not get you a 3GB server, you would be lucky to get $2gb. 3GB would most likely cost around about $20-30 which is much more than chips. Must be some expensive chips you are buying.

You say advised, by who and what?

Probably by a health professional. Also none of our business.

If you have been advised to get a hobby and you chose to be a server owner, then you are quite foolish. I think this because hosting Minecraft servers is nothing to sail through. It's stressful and hard.

Depends how you see it and by previous experience. He may have some previous experience with making successful servers. For some people, servers are pretty easy and can sail right through it. I believe this is a great hobby choice and if he is new to the server scene, he will gain lots of skills and learn about getting better.

Everyone needs a hobby, I have mine and you have yours. If he wants to run a server, why stop him? I think we should be encouraging him, he already has a duty to his children, so our support is much better than negativity.

Again, I am not one to judge, but we should at least give him a chance. But that's up to the server owner I guess :P

posted a message on Minecraft Server Coloured MOTD Generator. [HTML, PHP]
Minecraft Server Coloured MOTD Generator
By Hunter

I recently restarted my old server and started getting everything organised. I noticed most of the servers I played on had fancy coloured MOTDs.

These are just a few:

I already knew how to do it manually by copy and pasting the colour codes and place them in my MOTD.

§0 = Black
§1 = Dark Blue
§2 = Dark Green
§3 = Dark Cyan
§4 = Dark Red
§5 = Purple
§6 = Orange
§7 = Light Grey
§8 = Dark Grey
§9 = Purple-Blue
§a = Light Green
§b = Light Cyan
§c = Light Red
§d = Pink
§e = Yellow
§f = White

This is my MOTD (and is seen at the top of the list in the picture above)
motd=§4Cubecrafted §6in §2Survival

But, I know some people may not know how to do that, or understand the colour codes. This is why I made a simple HTML and PHP site that does all the hard work for you.

You need to run this in a web server, or use XAMPP on your local machine for it to work, because it uses php to process.

I may learn to handle this using a different method in the future. But this is working for now. I may also get some webhosting for this, so you can just visit the site instead of downloading it.

I have included 4 different versions, each varying how many colour combinations there is. Shown below is 3 colour combinations. Where it says "First Word" it can be as many words as you like, it just means what ever text is in that box will be the colour specified.

Clicking submit will simply generate the MOTD for you, simple copy and paste into server.properties.

Simple put in your text and choose your colour that you want. It isn't very pretty, but it does the job. I didn't include every colour, I just chose the ones that look the best (IMHO) the other ones just hurt my eyes.

Feel free to download and edit to your liking. I made it for everyone. I tried to use Github, but I have no idea how to use it. I just use dropbox.

Download
Version 1 link.

For those who like to look at the HTML, please don't laugh at me, I know my html is messy haha. The bits I commented out was my trial and error. I forgot to completely remove them, and I can't be bothered re uploading to dropbox.

Need any help with it or found a bug, don't hesitate to drop a reply or PM me.

Have fun.

I agree, they shouldn't have the right to simply use another person's persona. I'm sure thats identity theft, if no permission was given.

If you deem necessary, report Sky to Machinima. Machinima should deal with the legal side of things.

posted a message on how do you update a server to 1.6.1?
I am guessing you are the server owner in this case.

These links are for the pre1.6.1 (By the time someone reads this, the official 1.6.1 would have probably come out anyways)

Linux: (centos, but may work for other distros)
1. SSH into your server.
2. Go to the directory where you have the server running.
3. Stop the server. (Enter through Screen, and then stop it from there)
4. Type in
wget https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/versions/1.6.1/minecraft_server.1.6.1.jar

5. Edit your starting sh script to match the new jar.
5a. Or rename the 1.6.1 jar to whatever you have in your starting script.
This is mine.
#!/bin/sh
java -Xmx1024M -jar minecraftserver.jar -o true

to
#!/bin/sh
java -Xmx1024M -jar /minecraft_server.1.6.1.jar -o true

6. Start your server.

Windows (Xp, 7, 8)
1. Go to the folder where you have your server.
2. Stop your server. (in the console, type "stop")
3. Download the 1.6.1 server exe
1.6.1 exe
4. Copy the exe into your server's folder.
5. Delete the 1.5.1 exe
6. Double click on the 1.6.1 exe to start the server.

Mac OSX:
Sorry I don't have a clue.

As for your question:
Quote from DACOPS

if he updates the server (not sure how to do that) will it work with the actual release of 1.6.1?

Most likely not, as they will probably fix bugs found in pre release 1.6.1, so therefore the official 1.6.1 will be slightly different.
Best to wait until the official 1.6.1 comes out, so the bugs may have been fixed.

If there has been no bug fixes between pre1.6.1 and the official 1.6.1, it will then probably work.

Hope this has been helpful.
