Don't worry dude, nobody's gonna jump on you because they think it's not legit or something.

Even if it wasn't, I doubt anyone would care. That's an incredible building. I'd give you all my diamonds if I hadn't just fallen into lava. You definitely need to post pics of whatever your next project is.

posted a message on [Archive #2] Beta Survival Picture Thread
My girlfriend has recently gotten into the game, and I decided to build her a house. I also decided to make it look like a giant cake. It seemed like the thing to do.

I'm pretty happy that I managed to light it with no lightstone or torches showing (AKA abusing the **** out of the stairs glitch). Light sources are crammed in behind the conspicuous wooden blocks by the tops of the pillars and behind the paintings, as well as lining the inside of the roof.

I originally intended to add an inside ceiling, but decided that seeing the 'berries' from the inside was a pretty cool effect and that I wanted to keep it. You can kind of see what I'm talking about in the third picture.

I wanted to get crazy with the inside layout but decided It'd be better to keep it open and easy to use, since she'd never really played a video game before, so I opted for the ghetto little work stations. They're not pretty but they're about everything you need.

Oh and this is what's in the important-looking chest under the painting.

EDIT: In case you couldn't tell this is so far away from legit that you can't even see legit from here. Everything was done while flying around with infinite blocks.

I am impressed by buildings that look good and unimpressed by buildings that look bad.

I really see no point to the whole vanilla versus modded conversation. I have a server I play legit on, and play single-player modded. When I play on the legit server, I don't do it because it makes my buildings more impressive (it doesn't) or earns respect (it shouldn't), but because I like exploring and finding ores sometimes, it gives the build process a different flavor that I enjoy.

I'm wholeheartedly in support of this: I'd love the ability to add more detail to a project, and to not have to build everything super-mega****er-huge scale to make it recognizable.

Dirt slopes might be a bit much though; 90 degree angles are kind of this game's thing.

But smooth stone stairs? Come on, why do I even have to ask for this.

DO YOU WANT ME TO BEG, NOTCH? I'LL BEG.

Hunger systems are fake difficulty. Real difficulty would be mobs with more advanced AI, or more tool-using monsters like skeletons, or lava killing you faster (right now you can practically swim through the stuff). And I'm all for that. I think Minecraft would benefit from being more challenging.

But having to baby your character isn't fun or challenging. It's just tedious.

I have a cat already. Don't make me feed my Minecraft character.

    Oh yeah.

I was surprised, honestly. It's such a quaint looking little game. But very few games have given me that twist-in-your-gut-danger feeling like Minecraft does when I look down an unlit side cavern and hear the corny zombie moan.

posted a message on KEEP TORCHES PERMANENT
I'd always assumed that when Notch decided to make torches impermanent he'd add something that would fill the role of full-time lighting, like lanterns.

Torches are just too insanely cheap to not be temporary. A lantern with a little bit of Iron in the recipe would be a more reasonable infinite light source, I think. Something more expensive than coal + stick.

I don't see the game changing very much when this is implemented. The biggest difference would be, depending on just how short a torch's life span is, that you might have to be fast at spelunking. I'm sure that there will still be ways to light your base.

I see a lot of people who defend crouching by saying "it's in most first-person games!". Is this really a good argument? The point is that the fear of falling was a major part of the Minecraft experience, crouching just removed that.

You seem to have the argument backwards.

We're not saying it's good because it's in most first-person games. We're saying it's in most first-person games because it's good.

Yeah, Survival Alpha is easy. But you chose the strangest things to complain about. The compass and crouching were great additions. Complain about mobs not being able to break glass, or their lame AI, or lava not killing you instantly, but compasses and crouching? You have a problem with CROUCHING? It's an extremely basic functionality, common to nearly all first-person games. Being able to build a roof without tumbling into your base and breaking a leg isn't overpowered or easy mode--it's not SUPPOSED to be hard.

posted a message on The True "Impenetrable Fort"
I'm noticing a lot of people touting the "keep-it-secret-keep-it-safe" idea--which is a good one--but I think something big is being forgotten: Namely, that you can view maps in a level editor (correct me if I'm wrong--I've only used Omen to view creative maps, but I believe it's possible to view survival maps as well with a few programs). If that's true, then it would be fairly easy for a determined griefer or thief to just scroll through the map looking for big hollowed out rooms underground. Using wood or other resources that are common in houses but uncommon underground would be a dead giveaway. The best approach, I believe, is not to have an underground fortress or hideout as some have suggested, but more of an underground hut--a small, unadorned, mostly stone chamber attached to an offshoot of an already-mined cave system.

I think that something along those lines, even though it would still be visible to a very persistent griefer in a map editor, would be hell to find. Znath's idea has it exactly right.
