    Thank you!
I think that's cleared that up in my mind.
(I read "when" as "if" rather than "after" in your previous post.)
So here I was planning to set off on a roundabout trip on a new world thinking I could generate an 8 block featureless corridor, I'm glad I didn't waste my time on that wild goose chase. I guess that if that worked it would have been noticed and commented on by now.
So just to make sure I've got it straight now, the "one vein per offset chunk" is a viable, if not worthwhile, strategy?

This is correct; the game does only generate a single vein per chunk, but the way it "populates" chunks with features is to offset the area being populated by 8 blocks to the east and south, done when chunks have been generated to the east/south; this is done so that features can cross over chunk boundaries

    Very interesting.
If I'm interpreting that correctly, that means that the one vein per chunk rule works when moving east or south into virgin territory?
And likewise, when loading chunks from the east/south westwards/northwards a modified "one vein per offset chunk" rule holds?
So the positions of features isn't solely determined by the seed but also influenced by the travels of the player(s)?
What things count as features in this regard?

    I've seen it multiple times.
not sure why it's a splash though.

    It's not!
It's an, intentionally, misspelled logo on the menu page. Search for "Minceraft" in the Wiki for a picture.
As for the splash I'm pretty sure that's "Minecraft!" not "Minceraft!"

posted a message on Will my world update from 1.7 to 1.8 when the update comes out?
It depends on how much of it you have explored.

Basically any chunk that has ever been loaded (up to 256 blocks away from anywhere you've ever been (depending on your render distance)) has already been generated in 1.7 (or earlier) and won't change when you update, any chunks that you've never been near before you update will be purely 1.8. So the new rocks will, I believe, only be found in the new chunks.

Apparently there are exceptions including, the new water temples and guardians are supposed to be able to be generated in old chunks as long as you haven't spent very much time there (5 minutes?) Bunnies should be able to spawn in old chunks (but are likely to be much more common in new chunks), existing villagers are supposed to keep their existing trades but new villagers will use the new trades.

The new crafting recipes will of course work anywhere.
I believe there will be a fix for some methods of overlapping villages such that some massive iron farms can't be built in 1.8 but can be kept running (with some luck) if they were built in 1.7

I haven't been keeping tabs on the snapshots so I don't really know what else will be changing.

So to get to the top of the nether you will need to spam enderpearls on the bedrock and hope you get in. And for raidproof nothing is but make 3 layers of obsidian around it and pour water over the top DO NOT USE LAVA!! make it as small as you can that way it will be harder to nether portal in and either make it in the air or make it underground.

I don't think you can get above the upper nether bedrock by portal, only back out?

posted a message on Need Help To Program Mouse For Minecraft
According to the Wiki: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Controls scrolling through the Hotbar is non-configurable, it uses the scroll wheel, period.

So I think the only way to do what you want is if you have a mouse driver that lets you reprogram how the buttons work.

Or maybe some third party program.

Check if your mouse came with a CD/DVD or if the manufacturers homepage has a downloadable driver with that function. I remember that Logitech had one that let me rearrange how the buttons worked back when I was playing DOOM.

But StarLing's suggestion is pretty good, just press the number button corresponding to the Hot-bar slot you want, 3 for your pick, 1 to go back to the sword, etc.

posted a message on Mechanics of Melons and Melon Farms
    Yes, see the tutorial http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Pumpkin_and_melon_farming

Actually it selects one of blocks on the four sides regardless of what is there and if it isn't empty with Dirt, Grass, or Farmland underneath it doesn't spawn a melon that round. So for fastest growth you want to surround each stem with hydrated farmland on all four sides. The nearly most space efficient way is double rows of stems alternating with double rows of dirt .

Re: finding 2 diamond veins in the same chunk.

It was recently(ish) and I don't use snapshots, so 1.7.{something}.

So, I was digging a corridor at Y=5 as usual and I see diamonds so I dig all round them and continue digging the corridor and was pleasantly surprised to find more diamonds just 5-10 blocks further along. For some reason I decided to check the positions with F3 and found it was all the same chunk.

One vein was around the middle of the chunk and the other right up against the edge, but entirely in that chunk, something like chunk coordinates (0,6),(0,7),(1,6) and (1,7) level 4 and 5 I think. (And it could have been the other side of the chunk at (14) and (15)) So this surprised me, since I had heard about the one vein per chunk thing and I was going to ask here but I checked the Wiki and a tutorial and found that this was a known fact.

The once per chunk rule doesn't work, I have found two diamond veins in the same chunk.

As I understand it diamond veins are generated once per chunk but the vein isn't nessesarily in the chunk it "belongs to".

posted a message on Wolves spawning in closed buildings
The glass roof shouldn't make much difference, lighting with torches should also let them spawn.
And I suspect that wild wolves would be as effective as dogs for avoiding additional spawns.

Is the sheep pen the only grass in the area?

posted a message on How do I farm slimes?
What version of the game are you playing?

I've seen posters in other threads saying that the latest snapshots (PC) have very low spawnrates for slimes.
Also, whether you play single player or on a server may be relevant.

Otherwise I'd just suggest running around in caves under level 40 and you should find them.

Then if you want to farm them, build some walls along the chunk borders so you can come back later and tell exactly where they spawned and dig out spawning chambers in that chunk.

If you are too close to the ground you might have too many mobs spawning on the ground or in caves.

posted a message on What is a good way to find slime chunks in smp?
A lot of smaller rooms, one per chunk, would be better I think.

Then once you see which ones spawn slimes you can dig more layers in those chunks.

Running around in caves under level 40 has always given me more slimeballs than I need, I haven't tried SMP though.

I would suggest finding some slimes in well lit caves (to cut down on other spawns) and building some walls so that you can come back later and see where the next batch spawned and then expanding the spawnable area in those chunks.

What version are you playing? According to the Wiki, in 1.8 14w20a Slimes are very rare.
