VADemon posted a message on Regarding disappearing threads, posts and usersPosted in: Forum Discussion & InfoI didn't want to get into this, but I was linked this thread once again, so here I am. I didn't want to give any of you a hard time (but honestly, do you care what a random idiot says on an Internet forum?)
First, none of your 4 e-mails (8 in my case, each for Minecraft and Gamepedia) stated that any data would be erased. Just that one would lose access to his account. The titles were also great: "❗FINAL NOTICE: Consent Required for Uninterrupted Service❗"
Any person would care about his account, but not your "service interruptions". I myself didn't do anything until the very last e-mail. Was it so hard to mention an account transfer in the subject field?
1/3rd of a healthy forum just vanished over night - Yahoo would have be proud of such effort, they have a long history of closing down and deleting everything left and right. Nobody could have thought it would only take 3-4 weeks, since acquisition became public, to finish the "transfer". The admins did a good job. (hm... probably without sarcasm this time)
(1) ‘personal data’ means any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (‘data subject’); an identifiable natural person is one who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity of that natural person;
(2) ‘processing’ means any operation or set of operations which is performed on personal data or on sets of personal data, whether or not by automated means, such as collection, recording, organisation, structuring, storage, adaptation or alteration, retrieval, consultation, use, disclosure by transmission, dissemination or otherwise making available, alignment or combination, restriction, erasure or destruction;
(23) ‘cross-border processing’ means either:
(a) processing of personal data which takes place in the context of the activities of establishments in more than one Member State of a controller or processor in the Union where the controller or processor is established in more than one Member State; or
(b) processing of personal data which takes place in the context of the activities of a single establishment of a controller or processor in the Union but which substantially affects or is likely to substantially affect data subjects in more than one Member State.

If the public forum posts were personal data, every page hit outside the EU would have been a violation of GDPR. Backups in different Data Centres would also be a violation of 23a. to my understanding.
By the way, what did Steam do to profiles when they updated for GDPR? They introduced more privacy settings to profiles, and DEFAULTED the new "my game list" option to FRIENDS-ONLY, so it wouldn't be public by default for anyone.
A neat side-effect was that they locked out SteamSpy with that move.
What makes me actually sad, is that no one cared enough to escalate/communicate it earlier to try and avoid it.I only hope that you'll figure it out and restore the published content.
42nd post. I'm out. -

SuntannedDuck2 posted a message on Category Covering Lite ModpackPosted in: Mod PacksOk, V1.4.2 adds a few mods and a tutorial world with all prior mods and the current ones few blocks as a playground of sorts. Not everything you do in the mods will be learned/presented. But the GUIs or the few things about the mod have been considered.
Images of the tutorial world 'space/playground' have been put up on the mod page 'images' tab now if curious.

omer03 posted a message on What is up with all the "User1234567" names?Posted in: Forum Discussion & Infoim ok that I lost my acc, but one thing that doesn't make sense is the amount of effort put into this. If a big percentage of the users in the EU are affected by this, arent you guys asking yourselves WHY? You keep bringing up the emails and pop up on the website. Why not use something else instead of a popup? Why not message the users profile? There are a lot of ways this whole situation could have been prevented. I blame whoever bought this forum.

monotonehell posted a message on Regarding disappearing threads, posts and usersPosted in: Forum Discussion & InfoI understand that you need to remove poster's personal information when they can't be contacted, but why is the content of threads being removed?
Many of these threads are linked to from other sources (like the wiki etc) and contain historically important information about projects, mods and utilities used over the years on Minecraft.
The content of threads is not private information - it is publicly posted information. I think you need to speak to your lawyers again regarding content versus personal data as it seems there's been a misunderstanding of the task at hand.
Wouldn't it be better to hang posts on anonymised pseudo users, and remove all the account records? You guys are also custodians of history, not just a forum.

_zombiehunter posted a message on Regarding disappearing threads, posts and usersPosted in: Forum Discussion & InfoAs one of the 1 million affected users, I would like to note the following:
1 - The notification emails you sent out were sent to my old (now unused) email adress I used when joining the forums 6 years ago, not to the current email I provided to my Twitch account, which the forum uses now. This is the reason I did not notice the transfer right away until my threads and posts have been deleted. I still haven't recieved any information why you did it this way, but I'm pretty certain something went wrong here.
2 - I've never seen any pop-up appearing on the forums hinting the transition to Fandom. It is not completely out of question that add-block ate it, but that's still strange as it only blocks web elements that are explicitely marked as adds. I've seen all other pop-ups appearing in the past too, even the one telling people to transfer their forum accounts to Twitch. Why would exactly this one be supressed by add-block? (Also, please don't come with "why u not deactivate add block? blablabla ... I've cought malicious stuff through adds in the past, also at least 90% of adds on the internet are pure cancer, especially the ones with sound. Not even talking about how much faster websites load with add-block ... the MC forums are no exception here. I'm not turning it off, never again!)
So yeah, I was completely unaware this purge is happening. I totally understand the GDPR and it's not a bad law, but it requires every company to give people a clear option to consent or opt out of any kind of data usage or data transfer. I did not recieve this option in any proper way. I get the feeling there might have been a few mistakes on your side, or not? I mean, the transition to Twitch worked flawlessly ...
I'm sure I'm not the only one having years worth of forum posts deleted out of nowhere, so what do you guys think? Anyone else out there who recieved zero information before having his stuff deleted?

Videogamer555 posted a message on What is up with all the "User1234567" names?Posted in: Forum Discussion & Info@criticsquid Why not keep the threads and posts up, under an anonymized name like "User90283479327"? Then if that user reclaims their account, you can reactivate their real username. Some old threads posted by inactive users contain links to downloads like mods that may otherwise be lost forever, due to these threads being posted by old users who won't ever visit the forum again. Content produced should NEVER be deleted, because of its usefulness to others.

I had 2 profile pictures uploaded, one of them was deleted, the other not.
As one was deleted it used forceful the other.

As I stated in the other thread, they could have just sent at least in forum PMs. Those had been received by any ACTIVE user.
So that is not on "our end", neither is this "out of peoples control". It's just sloppy.
As I also stated in the other thread, BEFORE deleting accounts and all posts, they could have deactivated them some time before the transfer was done. This also had pushed active users to follow the procedure (which the majority obviously didn't even know about now).
Yes, there's nothing to do about inactive users, but the damage caused could have been a way lower than it is now.
Beside this, I'm still not even sure, if it was even necessary to delete the forum contents at all, as to my understanding the whole law is about personal data. But that's another story and I'm no lawyer unfortunately.
But I still appreciate the effort being done now.

This is annoying. My email account is idk how many years old (15 years? 20 yrs?)
I use it for registration processes but also getting alot of spam, I dont check every single email - and obviously a large amount of users dont aswell.
Havent you noticed the lack of feedback from your sent emails? I even wonder if you actually cared about it?
Because if you had just sent messages through the forum (and if it's just asking the user to check their email -> including their spam folders, cuz mails tend to go into spam sometimes), then ACTIVE USERS actually had gotten the message.
Also I still don't get what has been actually done now..
What I see is, we lost our usernames (which I could recover somehow) and all our posts (incl. complete threads) have been deleted.
Now I really don't get it.. I can log in, I can change back my username. Now it is done? Or will i be "deleted" again?
It feels like deleted but not fully deleted and I am like "?????"

How to consent when we've not been asked?
I can't speak for others, but no1 asked me for anything, then suddenly the forum is completely messed up on my end.
