I very much dislike the idea of fighting a person who is using brass knuckles against a sword and it being a fair fight.

What Mincraft needs is more depth. Yes, more creatures, but the world doesn't seem alive. As with the above poster, we need more daytime, persistent mobs that have settlements of a sort. Perhaps roving bands of bandits, a village of goblins or "beast-men" of some kind. As it stands, diversity is finding some random village who's inhabitants are pretty stupid, mineshafts that are just halls of randomness with a chest or two tossed in, and temples. Would be cool to have the game make something interesting and challenging. We don't need more combat options or arrow types, we need something to keep us wanting to play more.

We need more combat too but yeah I agree. I have asked for more NPCs with better AI for a long time...

posted a message on A big problem with Minecraft PVP: armor

An exponential scale isn't too terribly difficult but I'll agree a linear graph is more easily read. The problem being that if you move it from an exponential to a linear graph then by default the armor values are less (he even states that it would be 300% more life technically rather than 400%). I'd say more data is required to convince me that armor needs to be any less. Fights don't last long enough as is without any potion effects or enchantments. My second comment demonstrated that a fight end as quickly as 5 seconds (that's the minimum in vanilla although if you do enough damage you actually break the invulnerability timer so we're going to assume sharpness V or less). There isn't a time limit to the fights but with the minimum being that fast I would guess the average of somewhere around 30 seconds. That's not a very long time at all. In those 30 seconds you could be fighting for 4 hours of hard work in your inventory. If you have on armor prolonging your life is its job. If armor is any less useful than it already is you could have fights that last less than 30 seconds determining who lives and dies. If anything rather than tamper with the base armor values the protection enchantment values are what should be drastically reduced.

Adding a new tear, wont make diamond armor not op

He clearly stated "The problem with armor, in short" meaning all armor. He does go on to elaborate the difference between iron and diamond but that does not make up for the fact that he's suggesting all armor be nerfed in its effectiveness in which case I protest and say that if anything the other armors below diamond should simply be bumped UP in their effectiveness rather than all armors be bumped down.

As of 1.8 the diamond sword does 8 dmg (4 hearts). To a person in diamond armor that's 1.6 damage a swing. It takes 12.5 (so basically 13) hits to kill someone assuming both armor and weapon are unenchanted. That means as is with the invulnerability meaning you can only take damage every half of a second somebody could die within 6.5 seconds of combat. 6.5 seconds is not enough time to resolve a conflict between two fully armored opponents. As it is currently fights are over way too quickly (albeit they do last more than 6.5 seconds usually but not too much longer).

As of 1.9 the sword does 7 * 1.45 for 10.15 DPS. That means it will essentially do 2 damage per second to a person in diamond armor. A total of 10 hits. 10 * .5 seconds for invulnerability timer means that a fight could end in 5 seconds (theoretically). I don't think armor is prolonging life for too long by any means. Even if the shield were to quadruple the amount of time a fight took on average it could still be over as quickly as 20 seconds. If most fights between people of equal gear and skill lasted a minute on average would that be too long? Seems like an alright amount of time to me if not on the faster end.

As far as leather armor goes I'd say cows should drop a lot more leather on death to make it a viable starting gear since iron is so easily acquired.

Sorry, but I actually would rather my armor be worth putting on. Minecraft is the only game I've found that almost represents how important armor is in a battle. Also of course diamond armor is going to be the most powerful...it's the end-game item. Diamonds are the most valuable so diamond armor is the most valuable. Fights lasting awhile would actually be a great addition. I'd love to have an epic battle rather than sit there and mash my left mouse button and see who dies in the first 5 milliseconds.

posted a message on General thoughts on 1.9
Having been an advocate for Minecraft's PvP to change since version 1.0 the 1.9 update is coming as a bit of a relief. Unfortunately, it's a bittersweet relief. Rather than see anything I'd hoped for and a shift to some really cool new weapons and mechanics we're seeing hoes. The same old hoes we had before. I'm not opposed to making the Minecraft tools semi-viable weapons but making them on par with a sword or an axe seems lazy. The addition of shields is a huge step up, and the cooldown to weapons is possibly the most important thing that will ever happen to Minecraft PvP. However, this still could be made a lot better.

Rather than using tools as weapons why not add in a few new weapons? Minecraft is seriously lacking in the projectile department having only a "short" bow. It isn't exactly providing an impressive display in the melee department either, a sword and an axe are only two weapons. I'm not counting tools because those in my opinion should function more like improvised weapons.

There have been countless suggestions in the forums for different weapons and I don't know why Mojang decided to implement tools as weapons equal to swords. (Here's to hoping) I would suggest Mojang add a new weapon and a new category of weapons and retract their current idea. A spear would go a long way (pun unintentional) to improving the balance. Then the game would have a triangle of weapons that all have their own niche. Sword, Axe, Spear. The new category would be Two-Handed.

Two-Handed weapons would have more reach than the one handed and do more damage but would have more difficulty defending. This makes shields useful.

Regular one handed weapons would have less reach but you could have a shield to ease parrying.

Spear - Greatest reach, least damage, fast speed
Sword - Medium reach, medium damage, medium speed
Axe - Low reach, high damage, slow speed

Conceptually I think Mojang is on the right track but I really don't want to fight with a shovel. :D

P.S. I have lots of thoughts about projectiles too but you can check my profile for those ideas.

posted a message on Will shields make any difference in pvp?

I've been wondering the same exact thing. I was hoping "combat update" entailed some shift in core combat mechanics and not just some new items that will only encourage the gear grind further. Still hoping Timed blocking/Timed attacking will be a thing although that seems more like wishful thinking now.

Donation is a choice man! I know that people get cool stuff for donating, but COME ON MAN. I could go on and on about why my answer is no. Overall,

this is just no good. We probably would get google ads in minecraft if another company funded servers, by the way.

I can see that the ads could be concerning. Maybe I should have specifically stated: I don't want this unless the ads are not anymore intrusive than current donation ads are in chat.

Mojang is able to run their own servers for free because they have the technology and servers.

This would kill every other server in existence. (Apart from modded servers)

Umm...it will really only kill server companies. I specifically stated the people should still rent servers from Minecraft so they're still 100% customisable by the owner it's just they'd be getting service from Mojang instead of Ownagehosting or what have you.

Mojang already has "official" servers! It is called REALMS. Mojang probably has the funding to do this already, as shown by Realms.

Anyways, it is the server's choice to add donations. And with the EULA, the donations can't give any rewards to donaters except for cosmetic changes.

    No Support

While the EULA states that only cosmetic items should be the case that's not enforced and most servers still give items that are advantages. Realm servers are just as at fault for donations as any other server is at the moment. Welcome to reality.

Mojang has neither the resources nor the staffing to manage official servers.

Having been recently acquired my Microsoft for 2.5 billion dollars. I'm sure a thousand official servers wouldn't be too much. Even if it was a huge flop and every server ended up costing them $50...2.5 billion - 50Thousand = Plenty of Money. If it works they'd actual be making money.

I am a server owner. I'm still planning donations. Donating to servers has nothing to do with Minecraft, its players wanting to support/get an edge on that particular server. I doubt Mojang can openly control that.

Having been a server owner myself many times donations are truly a problem to fair play. The game becomes pay to win with donations involved. This isn't fun or fair to a player who has already payed for the game. With the method mentioned players would be supporting the server just by playing on it and every person could be treated equally and no special treatment for those willing to cough up their money. Mojang could control this on the official servers. Other servers wouldn't be subject to the same rules but the official servers would be a level playing field.
