posted a message on Consumable command item (enables town tele scrolls, time control, etc.)
Use the (unwritten) item once to input a command. Using it again consumes the item (unless InfiniteUses metadata is 1) and processes its command. This could be used to create:
    • town teleport scrolls
    • weather/time control devices/spells
    • +1 level scrolls
    • redeemable /give item coupons, etc.
    • Combine with a replace block command for endless possibilities, such as opening/closing bedrock doors!
The InfiniteUses data is important, as is the ability to rename the item either through anvils or the initial prompt. I would also like to see a UseTime data to determine how long the player needs to hold the right mouse button (similar to eating/drinking) before the item is used to make it more difficult for players to use certain command items while in combat while other items can be used instantly.

    Reddit post here.

I'd just go with levers behind a wall of torches. Best display you'll ever have for numbers, letters, symbols, and large images

posted a message on Vanilla Arrow Detectors
After much testing, vanilla arrow detectors:

Great for Legend of Zelda style dungeons and hidden locks. Also, using arrow dispensers, it's likely possible to detect rain with this setup as well. However, because snow doesn't produce splash particles, precipitation detectors shouldn't be built in snowy biomes.

posted a message on Cracking down on Piracy
That's ridiculous. It goes against Notch's own words at this link: http://notch.tumblr.com/post/1121596044/how-piracy-works. I wouldn't be too surprised if someone else on the team designed this, and I would be disappointed in Notch if he had.

The argument that it's low to pirate Minecraft due to it being an indie game is absurd considering that it currently costs more than a copy of Twilight Princess and three metric crap-tons of other highly polished, non-indie games while being an erratic and constantly buggy beta (higher price to come later when it's "finished" but naturally still buggy). I've personally purchased Minecraft twice (for myself and a friend). I wouldn't have purchased it at all if I hadn't a pirated copy to test on an offline-mode server first.

Also, many pirates aren't willing to buy the game regardless of the cost and simply wouldn't play if there were no ways to obtain it free. Thus, piracy turns people who would otherwise have absolutely nothing to do with the game into free advertisement. Even Notch understands and has stated this in the above link, yet a massive chunk of the population simply refuse to understand.

posted a message on [HELP] Activate redstone torch with a pressure plate
    Artist-of-the-year-side-view-of-doom:

All you really need to know is this: blocks can receive power but not give it, torches can only give power and not receive it, and torches turn off when redstone or another input powers the block they're on.

Thus, in the above illustration, the plate powers the block which turns the torch off. Because the redstone wire is no longer powered by the torch on the side of the block, the torch on the other block is in its default state of on. You can move the torch that's on the side of the pressure plate's host block to its own block if you want and then connect the two by a line of redstone.

Also note that a redstone torch can power blocks directly above them. Therefore, you can make a tower of blocks with redstone torches on their tops and the power will be inverted at each layer.
