I'm having the same problem.
To elaborate the client is saying it is unable to connect to minecraft.net but my internet connection is fine and if I got to minecraft's website I can login but I cannot log in through the launcher.
Quick update now the launcher just says "login failed" I checked the password and everything.
Another update: now it just freezes saying "logging in..."
I've had one entirely surrounded so I excavated the entire surroundings and basically it was all cobblestone or moss stone except where the exit should be which was covered with coal (I guess it intersected during generation)
I think it's a fun idea...but like others have said I don't like it feeling like "the end"
I think something more interesting could be like a special cave that is hard to find (there is a way to find them similar to the eye of ender) that you go into and there's something (similar to the dragon egg or whatever) that if you step close to (it is activated by stepping on redstone ore adjacent to it) releases a red dragon. Right then it leave immediately (they cave spawns in such a way to allow it to escape...or something...) and you have to kill it in the real world (how exactly it is all done, not entirely sure but just an idea).
I also like sky dimension better, I don't want to go crazy with dimension after dimension but I always like the idea of skyworld.
I feel like the end of a game should tie together all the important stuff from before in some way or tie them in...I understand to get there you gotta kill endermen in the main world, and blazes in the nether but the battle itself should spawn stuff like creepers, skeletons zombies and spiders on the bottom not just a floor of Endermen (I mean when you think of minecraft do you think of endermen or creepers?). Also I feel like the dragon should be more of an interesting fight than taking pot shots and avoiding him after blowing up his heal balls...

Netherbrick stairs cannot be placed upside down (at least in my SMP).
