Do I need to include a literal ".jar" when renaming the .jar?

I must be doing something wrong. Do we need to be online when we do all of this or something?

Not another Forge mod! Forge is absolutely refusing to work on my computer. I've followed the site's own instructions for proper installation and it still doesn't want to work.

No, I haven't gone back to 1.4.7 to try to install this mod (I am literate). It's an issue I've been having with forge since 1.5
