    That's a bummer, ain't it.

Over time, I've learned, from your type experience, to listen to sounds as I mine or walk down a natural tunnel or one I've created. If I hear a glub-glub as I walk by a portion of the wall or floor, I know lava is somewhere close to that location. And as I learned, the hard way, when I start hacking into the wall where I heard the sound, I build myself a two high block of stone or cobblestone to stand on in case the lava is closer than I realize. So far, following this method, I've not singed a single hair on my head or lost a life. And make sure you don't dig straight down on the block you're standing on, or the block you're standing under.

Part of setting up a new world is enabling "cheats," so if that wasn't done when your new world was set up you won't be able to use cheats. If you watch the video that came from YouTube, you can learn how to turn 'cheats' on or at least check to see if you have it on. To do this you need to use NBTExplorer, and the girl in the video shows you how to use it. Or just download NBTExplorer from here

posted a message on Any "older" folks play Minecraft?

I got started gaming with Atari, ended up having both consoles in the end. Then bought their 600XL computer, and found Zork, though had trouble visualizing my way through the game. Then found a computer magazine, can't remember the name, which had programs for various games which could be inputted if a person had the right cartridge for the 600XL, which I did. Finally got my first Windows computer and found DOOM, Wolfinstien(SP) and a few others. It wasn't until I discovered Myst that I found the type of game I really liked. Then I discovered Minecraft a few years back, and played it off and on since--too much screen time bothers the eyes. I turned 66 this year, five years after retiring after 34 years with the same company. Miss the work, but not the garbage associated with it.

I took the time from running around exploring to build a rather nice structure--polishes nails on shirt--and have found another I'm in the process of making so that I can explore it without drowning; my method might work, or it might not. Any who, so much is left to explore, find, or drain from my imagination that I may be found hunched over the keyboard in a rather stiff state one day. :-)

posted a message on Caves in the later updates

Openings to caves near the surface means less digging to start another mine, or find something unexpected. As to those caves having dead ends, keep digging then, It's just possible something of value lies just out of site.

posted a message on Help, I need to get back the feeling when i played minecraft for the first time

As Geneo said, you can be a newbee only once, for a few days/months. But why try to recapture that moment, why not try asking "what if?" What if you try this, or try that? If you've mined in one manner, try another. Try building something totally unexpected. Do the opposite as to what you've been doing. And, take a vacation from Minecraft for an extended period of time. Allow yourself to get rusty, forget some things you learned. Forget where you were and what you were doing.

Have you figured out how to clear a room of lava? Or gain obsidian when lava is still around? (gravel is a wonder rock in these two instances). Have you discovered all of the hidden or forgotten mines? Find any structures in the ocean? Build any structures in the ocean? I saw a video where a guy made a portal, enter the nether region, build another portal, went through that portal, and found himself somewhere totally new. Not on his original world. Ever try this?

The only limitation on what you do with Minecraft is between your ears. You can't start life as a baby again, and you can't become a newbee in Minecraft. You can only gain more experience and have more fun.

posted a message on FALL IN LAVA. LOSE EVERYTHING.
I was mining out an underground cavern I found and ran into lava. I didn't have a lot of items in my inventory because I'd fallen into a ravine, twice, at two different locations at the same ravine, and lost everything. Since then I take everything but the bare minimum out of inventory before venturing into these situations.

The first time I fell into lava I had water on hand and was out of the lava and had water flowing before the lights went out. The second time I got too close to the edge and did watch the lights go out and lost only a few torches and stone tools.

Something I discovered and wish to pass on is using gravel to displace lava, square by square. I had a bunch of gravel in my inventory and since it isn't of much use, decided to use it to displace lava in this one area. I forgot gravel reacts to gravity and the first block of gravel I placed slid below the surface of the lava. The light went on and I continued placing gravel blocks until that one square was completely filled with gravel. Because gravel does react to gravity I've been able to fill in lava squares 4 and 5 blocks deep. My old method of using cobblestone to fill in a lava square, dig out the cobblestone, fill in the next level, etc. is out the window.

When I hear the glub-lub of lava I'm real careful how close to a block I stand when I mine it. I stay 2-3 blocks away and if lava does appear I'm far enough away to get out of the way if necessary--finger sets on the 'S' key during this operation. I also build a dam 1-2 block wide and as long as needed, and stand on this dam when lava is behind blocks being removed. And when I did down in a lava area I dig the block two blocks in front of me. And digging up, I stand well back when doing this. So far, knock on wood, I've never hit lava when digging up.

posted a message on How do i install mods? this new minecraft installer is complete crap.
Could it be the mods needed for this new version of Minecraft haven't been developed yet? Or the loaders? Code has changed for the things that were added, so might it also apply to how mods are installed and into what folder?

posted a message on PC upgrade
It's going to depend what upgrades you have in mind. If a completely new computer, then you must decide if it'll be a desktop or laptop because your hardware choices will be different. You also have to be concerned with heat build up. Get the wrong type laptop and you could end up with overheating problems. Get the wrong setup for a desktop and the same thing could result. There are many more things to consider but the first two you should consider is 1) what you'll be doing on this computer and 2) if what you want to do can be done easier on a desktop or laptop. I don't remember the name, it starts with a 'C', but they build custom computers and are spoken highly of by many on another site I visit. You can also see what New Egg has as far as hardware and systems, I've had good luck with them.

Our latest computer is a custom buitd desktop, without all the garbage brand name companies install. A garbageless computer is one reason we went with a custom built.

I watch a guy use a Minecarft map in Bryce 3D Pro. Decided to try the demo, which was only suppose to last about an hour, but ended up playing for three weeks offline. I played in Peaceful mode the entire time and when Fathers day rolled around bought the game.

posted a message on Getting rid of lava while mining?
While exploring on level 5 I came across a large cavern and two pools of lava, one abutting a large area of obsidian, the other off to the left. Within the cavern, and near the obsidian, was flowing water, coming from above. I dug my way up to the water source and collected it in a bucket. Stopping the water flow allowed me to explore the cavern a bit more only to find the lave which was the source of all the obsidian. I also noticed another water flow further on in the cavern. Where I found the first water source was another area in the opposite direction, which, it turned out, ended in a lava pool. I bucketed some lava from this last pool and discovered it had covered a block of redstone; the lava had not backfilled this one spot. Also present was two blocks of lapis, which I was determined to get.

Slowly I begin trying to place cobblestone where edges of stone were visible within the lava. I'd then move to the next spot and repeat the process. After placing the second cobblestone I'd back up one block, behind the fist block I placed, and know it out to see if any lave existed. If no lava showed when the first block was removed, I'd take out another block one block deeper. If no lava show I'd fill in those two removed blocks and move on to the next lava spot. Following this routine I clear this entire are of lave, and started digging extension tunnels.

During the dig of the second extension tunnel I hit water, which I blocked with a couple of cobblestone blocks. I kept blocking and moving until I got close enough to throw a cobblestone block into the water source. I then dug out this last block to make sure no water existed and suddenly realized I was seeing black beyond the last block removed. I'd come back into the cavern, only further into the cavern. From this point I saw the lave pool and a water flow, one of two as it turned out.

I stair stepped up to the water source, blocked it, and the second one I found, and went back down to the cavern floor. Going further into the cavern revealed another water flow which I blocked off until I got close enough to the source to block it. Then I headed to the lava pool, which turned out to be one of two in that area.

This first pool was blocked by a good size obsidian field, with lava beneath some of the obsidian blocks. Because of my previous experience getting rid of lava I decided to try the same method here. I stood two blocks behind a block of obsidian and dug out the block directly behind that block. If no lava was found I could remove that block of obsidian. If lava was present I then tried to place a block of cobblestone, or gravel, or dirt, directly under that block of obsidian. Sometimes I'd end up putting two or three blocks before the lava was removed, but in this way I ended up removing all the lava and removing all of the obsidian.

While in this area I took out several blocks of redstone and coal, a few lapis blocks, and heard the sound of more lava just beyond a wall I was about to tear down. I built a ramp to get high enough to peer over this wall and was surprised to discover I'd reached the same lava pool I saw from the mouth of the cavern. To make this story shorter, wash, rinse, repeat, and I was able to remove the lava and mine the obsidian. Between these two areas I mined over 100 blocks of obsidian.

The store gets better, and shorter. The lava pool that was to the left of the cavern entrance was also removed, same manner, and I found an abandoned mine. A lava flow was plugged and another lava/water area discovered. Cleared blocks to get to the lava/water area and in plugging both water and lava flows, discovered another room full of obsidian. Followed the same process as before and after clearing this room of obsidian I'd mined in all three areas over 150 blocks of obsidian. And 5 diamonds to boot.

Clearing lava can be done, if slowly, but it can be done. When lava flowed after a block was removed, I'd back up and throw down a block to stop the flow until I could build a dam. Once the dam was build I'd break the blocking block and try to place another block directly into the opening the lava was coming from. As I said, it's slow work, but can reveal a vast hoard.

    Version 1.6 Launcher
    Window 7 32 bit

This is what I see when starting the 1.6 Launcher. As you can see in the bottom right corner it says Log Out, when I'm not logged in, and Play Offline. In order to Log In and Play I have to Log Out, Log In and then the Play button will appear. This never happened with the last launcher. Once I quit the game I was logged out and did not have to log out when again starting the launcher.

@lightblubwindows: I can't speak to the Texture Pack, but when I launched the new 1.6 launcher and entered Minecraft, the world I'd created was still as I left it--a mess. So it appears world aren't affected by this new launcher.
