Of course, to balance this all out (since I think flying should be hard to earn), you'd have to build an additional set of Nether portals, large enough to accommodate a Ghast + rider, and probably powered by a single Diamond block surrounded by either Gold or Iron.

Here's my beginner's guide (only half serious here but it's a good guide):
1) get 4 wood.
2) make workbench
3) make wooden pickaxe
4) reclaim workbench
5) dig straight down. If you die, don't worry, you only wasted a minute. go to step 1 and pick another spot.
6) if you spot iron, use your workbench to make a stone pick.
7) hopefully you found some coal along the way and if you did, then make a furnace, smelt, and make an iron pick if you have 3 irons.
8) press f3, periodically, and stop at Y coordinate 13 (anywhere between 11-17 is good).
9) dig around and make a little base.
10) Go find some diamonds!
You can get a bit more than 4 wood. I think twenty is plenty. But do it gently. Rolling in a Bentley. Niggas trying to get friendly, when you get some diameends. then we, dig straight down you know it's how we pimps be, because we be, mining for the diamond B. Yea, this is how beginners should do it.

I've seen it happen many times to independent games. Notch probably wanted to be able to devote more time to the game (or less time to work in general) so he let another company take care of the forums, or....
He let them host it in exchange for free advertising.
Regardless, Mojang probably wanted to devote less time to this.
Another thing.
Searching for coal by digging straight into dark territory is dangerous unless you ALREADY have torches. Get a few more pieces of wood, and convert them into charcoal. Safer, doesn't take too much time, and it's effective until you find your first coal bed.
So I'm coming up with a new way of playing after recently discovering the "Day-Light Savings" mod, since recent mods either end up making me delete the save because everything is too overpowering, or full of complex recipes that I can't be bothered to remember and/or are only there for novelty.
This leads me to "real-time" playing, but I'm stuck as to which method I should use, and wondering what the community thinks.
"CPU-Sync", which is where my save is always synced to the time of day.
This would be interesting- since I'm nocturnal by nature, the majority of my playtime would be spent at night, with plenty of s.
"Full-Day Cycle", where I start at Noon and set the time so that it passes according to earth time. This means I would get 12 real-life playing hours of day-light, and 12 real-life playing hours of living Nether.
If all goes well, I may make a LP based on this (perhaps doing the whole restart-on-death thing if I show I can stay alive a decent amount of time).
What would you guys think? And do you think this type of playing will hold interest?

If you were giving the person all your stuff, why does it matter that he killed you? He kept you from wasting your time, it seems.
I am somewhat depressed that so many people seem to harbor such a distaste for the endgame user-base in general. Is it really so bad that some people choose to maximize and minimize?
