Aug 18, 2011Grifstar posted a message on 1.8 Updates: First Ravines, Now RiversI see that new terrain/biome code is coming along nicely *A* (is it just me, or do mountains seem taller in this picture than usual?)Posted in: News
Yeah it kinda sucks that rives don't flow, I was hoping they would too but that might be hard to do without either completely changing how water behaves again or making a completely brand new water block just for rivers :| (maybe separate the difference by calling it fresh water and salt water).
Oh well, maybe it can get improved later on, I'm okay with the way it is now. -
Aug 2, 2011Grifstar posted a message on 1.8 Updates: Endermen or Farlanders?Endermen sounds more ominous than Farlander, which fits the nature of them a lot better and makes them feel more unknown and mysterious. Even if it is just a spoof of Slenderman.Posted in: News
Farlander just sounds like a name someone would give somebody that's a different country or something. -

Jul 20, 2011Grifstar posted a message on Notch Reveals Leveling and PermadeathPosted in: NewsQuote from LePheel
Wow.. I'm disappointed in all of the people who are writing on this thread.
PLEASE READ MORE BEFORE YOU POST
Anyone who knows anything about the Adventure mode should understand it is just that.. a SEPARATE GAME MODE.
THIS WILL NOT AFFECT ALL YOUR SAVES
Quote from Wiki »Dubbed the Adventure Update, meant to flesh out the game a bit and make exploration and combat more rewarding.[1][2] Note that this is not Adventure Mode.[3]
How about you learn to read yourself, yes?
Permadeath sounds lame, though I can see it getting added hard/hardcore difficulty for those who want more of an edge to their game (And I'm not even sure how that'd work in SMP). I just don't like spending hours/days/weeks/months on a map in SSP only to lose it all forever because of one mistake. I also don't want to deal with stupid remarks of "Go play creative mode then if you want to build". What if I like doing both?
Everything else is fine(and workarounds like loosing all exp/levels instead), I just hope permadeath is optional in some way shape or form. - To post a comment, please login.

Otherwise a biome update in general would be amazing, and water content and more Nether. Annnd Mod API. Honestly though I do still like where the recent updates have been going so far so I think I'll probably like whatever they do next regardless. There is still a ton of areas that can be improved or fixed and every major update does still try to address some of those too.

I dunno the problem I have with the new diamond block is that it looks a little too squared, with the details around the star bit and all (not too sure how to explain it). The iron block has it too but it's more excusable since it's a very industrial/processed look and iron is infamous for that. Diamonds don't really do that exactly. Personally I don't think the old texture seems that bad anyway, although maybe rather than coming up with a new design maybe you can try reshading it? Maybe that will make it fit in better.

Sooomeday, maybe. ;^;

I'm sure mods will find creative things to do with bats too, so I'm definitely not worried about it.

.... You had me at marble.
Those lecterns look pretty damn sweet though. I think 1.4 is going to be my new favorite update.

I'm totally looking forward to the Gold world type/generation to come out too.

It seems like it only wants to use the solid grass/snow texture or the solid dirt one, never the one of the dirt with grass/snow hanging off the edge. Is this some kind of bug in the current version or something (or do I need to config something)? It hasn't been bothering me too much but it does look a little tacky.

I really hope this is the case anyway. It seems kinda dumb that villagers would end up offering you absolutely nothing if you already filled all trades it could give you. At the same time, I guess it would pretty much force you to take those ones out to pasture and repopulate new ones. :|

But of course, that's assuming that you're mining for your emeralds. I can see why it might be an issue if you're getting emeralds by say, selling chickens and wheat or something, and then turning that profit into diamonds. Then yeah, diamonds should maybe be a little more expensive than that. But a whole stack of emeralds for just one diamond? That's freakin' insane. Diamonds are valuable, but they aren't that valuable. Hell now that they're somewhat renewable at all I might have a reason to use them more.
And again, not every village comes with a blacksmith. You could be traveling for a hell of a long time before you even find one. There's still a big luck factor involved in all of this.
Also, this.

Oh, nevermind then XD
Also I would agree with the masses that another use for cocoa beans would be nice to have. Could go either way with that.

What I would like to see though is the wooden stairs (I can still dream) and a reason for those desert wells. C418 was also supposed to be working on a ton of new music so hopefully that would be impelemented soon too.

I can understand the reasoning why and don't mind waiting awhile longer (I haven't been seriously playing in weeks anyway). So far it seems like what they're doing now with this whole SSP/SMP merge is really going to make things so much easier later on, even if it's all really clunky right now.

Trees can still be planted as long as there's enough light and room for it, which can cover all your wood and charcoal (if you bring along a furence) needs. Food really isn't a problem either when Nether used to infamous for the best place to find mushrooms back in the day and they can be grown easily, and you also have an infinite supply of zombie pigmen as well. As for armor? It's probably the only thing you will be out of luck with unless you want to travel back to the overworld, or you get incredibly good at gathering gold nuggets.
Honestly though I think the bigger question is not so much whenever or not the Nether is tameable (or if it should be) but rather why would you want to. Besides the hellish atmosphere and different mobs, the Nether still offers very little aside from one kinda cool gimmick block (Netherrack), a less useful block (Soulsand), a new lightsource (Lightstone), and just a new brick aesthetic (Netherbrick). Even the mobs themselves do you very little good too unless you want to be a master potion maker, craft some renewable gold bars, or you're actually trying to get to the end of the game.
I don't really think water should be legitly transfered to the Nether, but I won't mind supporting a sort of 'substitute water' liquid if there is one. Or hell, just make a new plant that's just the lava equivalent of wheat instead (or whatever it is you're trying to copy). The Nether needs a lot more unique content anyway.
