One issue with bugs is that they'd essentially have to be purely passive creatures, or not be able to kill you. **** off a hornet/bee/wasp nest, they chase you and sting you for a bit, dealing maybe half a heart every few seconds, but won't take you lower than half health. This is, of course, assuming they are the small size of actual bugs, and not scaled up. And this is due to the whole FPS gameplay thing making it hard to really hit a fast moving bug. Hard enough to hit a fast moving bat.
Another option is to pick bugs that would make sense being large, such as the dragonfly idea. If giant bees are added, a giant bee nest would be a great place, having honey that has the movement properties of lava, but doesn't hurt you.

The OP says dyed LEATHER armor, not saying all horse armor should be dyed, just Leather armor is capable of being dyed. That would only be 17 total items.
