It seems a few people are confused by one of the changed mentioned...
re-read it carefully people! He clearly asks if Survival mode will exist in its "Current form" (eg No Adventure Update) after the 1.8 update.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN THERE WILL BE NO SURVIVAL MODE!
It simply means that survival will be updated to adventure, and as he clearly says, you will not be able to play in the style of the old "survival mode" as an option.
Adventure is the new survival!
Why survive when you can live?

Yep, that's what I said to myself. The best solution I had was to go into creative and refill chests from memory. The alternative was to use a back-up from a week ago, which meant a lot of progress was lost.

Before, a chest full of random stuff collected:
And After, with empty chest:
Also interesting to note is that all paintings and item frames fall off the walls when logging in after updating, and anything in the frames vanishes too. No idea what is going on...
Edit: I'm thinking this could be due to changing from snapshot 14w11b to 1.7.6 which actually causes some features to be removed. Annoying bug though as it still caused all my items to be gone, but for now I'll just stick to the snapshot until the 1.8 release or next snapshot I guess.

Anyone else had this problem and/or know a fix?

But, as a map... from reading the forum, I'm not sure if the adventure component (Diaries and whatnot) have been removed with the new version, but my significant other and I could not find anything other than the initial "Crumpled note".
As such, after a few hours with nothing to guide us, we got pretty bored and quit. Sorry =(
I'd certainly be interested in coming back to this if more goals/challenges/story was added, but as it stands, it's just not my cup of tea.
Best of luck with your map making!

First off, let me say that I am highly impressed by the quality of work across the board!
The general sound effects for actions such as placing blocks, fight monsters etc are much better than in vanilla minecraft. Of special note, I loved the "click" button effect for menus, pressure plates and buttons, the shattering of glass, and the brilliance of the bow/arrow sfx. Monsters are especially creepy (I am now scared of ghasts all over again) and the ambience effects are terrific!
I did notice however, that there doesn't seem to be a sound effect for collect exp orbs? Could just be something with my version, but I did notice this missing. Also, I found that the item collection sfx was a little too quiet for my taste. Still an improvement over vanilla though!
Lastly, although I enjoyed the original compositions for background music, I found some of them to simply be too.... "Happy" for Minecraft. A few times when I was down in the dark, exploring and fighting monsters, the music would start with a rolling, joyous piano melody... which just felt out of place. This might not have been helped by the fact that the music seems to be longer than in vanilla minecraft. A game like this needs periods of silence, then music that comes in softly so that you barely notice it, but love it when it's there, and then don't notice it's gone until five minutes after it's finished. Again, this is my personal taste.
I will reinforce the fact though, that all sounds and music in this pack are still above and beyond what is in vanilla minecraft. While I would love to see some tweaks/additions/variations to this pack, I doubt I'll be turning it off an time soon.
TL;DR
This pack is amazing, download it now - you won't regret it.

It was challenging, yet fun, each monument/collectible had it's own challenge associated with it, the island felt realistic and natural, not as though it was a combination of parts stitched together - quite an achievement!
There may be some problems with pacing, such as the ease of getting diamonds - I finished with atleast 4 stacks, and waaay too much iron. Perhaps reduce the diamond ore count to allow for fortune pickaxes, or place the diamonds in a chest so it's always a set amount that the player receives.
Regardless, I had awesome fun with this map and you deserve a huge congratulations! Take your time with your next map, as long as you need to perfect it and make it as good as this one. I look forward to playing it when it gets finished!

If you haven't yet, go to the overhang cliffs (basically behind the stone bridge, over the hill until you find the fishing hut on the ice lake, and then turn around and you should see the entrance) and find all 5 binary books. These are the clues for what levers to use in that room. Once you have them all, it's actually pretty simple.
