How about no, YOU **** off and go make your own game.
Let notch make his.
gtfo.
LOL. This is one of the weakest arguments in the world. "dun like my picture? draw ur own! dun like this game? make ur own!" Jesus christ, criticism is a stranger to you, eh?
I was going to reply to something a little more recent, but I stopped reading the topic when I reached this post.
If you cannot distinguish the difference between not having an option toggle in a computer game and murder then there's something very wrong with you.
No, I wasn't "distinguishing" between toggling and murder, I was telling the person I quoted how doing it "for no reason" is retarded. Kind of like you, as it seems you have an inability to read.
There's a lot of things I simply have to accept about the game. We can't have toggles for all of them. Then we would have to call it "Toggle Fest" instead of Minecraft.
If you can toggle hunger, then I want one for Ghasts. Sammy wants one for drowning and Sparky wants one for huge biomes.
A slippery slope- where does it end?
It's fine to have toggable options for different things. Making Minecraft perfect in your image.
Which can mean anything, therefor has very little value as a response.
If you think hunger is justified in the game just based on "Survival", then you're also justifying our characters having to:
- Drink
- Age
- Get injuries
- Permanently die, every time.
- Lay in bed for days or months to recover from injuries.
- Poop.
- Pee.
- Be susceptible to diseases or genetic defects.
- Etc., etc., etc....
Do you still think "Survival" is an apt justification for hunger? Because you're opening up a door of logical conclusions you may not like.
Don't forget breathing! In fact, to be realistic, we should have a breathe key that we have to press every 2 seconds.
I assumed nothing. I only stated it as an option. I also said that you could live with hunger until the mod comes. And it will come a hell of a lot faster than Mojang would act on toggling hunger. :tongue.gif:
As a builder I certainly think it adds something. It forces you to choose between using renewable resources or finite resources when gathering resources, or when preparing areas for building.
I once dug out a hole for a semi-deep dome that required (if memory serves) approximately ~64,000 blocks to be destroyed. Though I primarily kept myself to using stone tools, I did use up the occasional iron--and I think maybe one diamond--to speed it up.
That choice dictated the cost of resources and time that project took, and was a resulting factor in the level of satisfaction upon completing it.
Def worth it, that looks awesome.
Make sure you press F1 though next time you take a picture.
I despise when people post this. Why do people assume that since we find one thing wrong, the whole thing is wrong? I love abandoned mines, [sl]endermen, and strongholds, just this hunger bothers me.
I agree with this, though perhaps not in such an angry way.
To the OP:
The REASON is simple: GAME BALANCE.
Not "realism". Balance.
Notch wants this to be a challenging game. If you've followed his tweets and posts, he makes this ABUNDANTLY clear. But there's one problem that exists when you have a game with too many instant-heal items, and it's what I like to call "Potion Spam".
Naming it after health potions from the Diablo games and similar things.
In games of that sort.... too many games actually... simply carrying a squillionty health potions (or whatever they happen to be) into battle with you and then spamming the "use potion/item/food/whatever" button could allow you to win fights that you DID NOT have the skill to defeat. Or didnt have the equipment to defeat.
In Minecraft, it made it so that players could get through dangerous situations without having to use much in the way of actual skill. Instead of trying to improve themselves so they DONT get hit by 50 skeleton arrows, they just spam heals. That doesnt improve skill.
The Hunger system *forces* players to actually IMPROVE themselves instead of just smashing the "win" button over and over. And yes, I've heard the "but healing food wasnt stackable so that was the downside therefore it was balanced" arguement. That's great. Simple fact though, you could still carry a ton of it. You could stick like 8 bowls of soup in your hotbar, and carry mushrooms and bowls to make more when those were gone. That's ALOT of healing, and it meant you didnt have to TRY very hard.
Now you do. Heaven forbid you actually have to put EFFORT into increasing your skill level in a game.
Notch had been going with an old-style of design right from the start. The sort of design that was used in older games, where healing wasnt easy, you didnt get infinite continues or checkpoints, and so on. He'd always meant for the game to be hard. It's not QUITE there yet, but... it's starting to point towards that, finally.
He's even said that he intends on having an "endgame" condition... but that it is to be so difficult that you dont necessarily beat the game yourself... you just occaisionally hear about someone that did (no, seriously, he said all of this. Go look it up.) Kinda like with something like Netcraft or whatever.
But the overall point is: Balance and challenge. THAT is the reason for the hunger bar.
And I very much respect them for coming up with this. There are WAY too many games that hold your hand these days and as such, are boring, boring, boring. Minecraft is starting to point the OTHER way, and that's just grand.
But it's not CHALLENGING, it's ANNOYING. When I'm building or exploring and my hunger hits zero, it's ANNOYING to have to head back and get food. It's ANNOYING to have to hunt down animals pointlessly for food, and finally, it's pretty DAMN ANNOYING that animals don't spawn and bread is mostly useless, so I have to just say goodbye to all my hardwork on my houses and become a nomad.

Hows the weather up there on your high horse?
Haha, funny because it isn't.
As are you.

Yes. Off... for me. Not for you.

Do you have **** for brains? I have never once stated I want it removed. I want it toggled.

But you get to CHOOSE if you want to go to the nether or not. I don't get to choose if I want Hunger or not.

But it's ok for floating blocks amirite??

I hope so.
