So this is going to be based on comments from notch's blog, twitter, and what he has said at minecraft con.
In a recent twitter, Notch stated that Valve had suggested to him "More reason to explore, regional resources, some kind of mapping or location system, a way to change spawn point, and planets." I have a suggestion that can link a couple of those together with the incoming updates.
My suggestion is to have some unique resource inside the biomes, like a certain type of tree that only grows in snowy areas or a certain type of stone or crafting material inside lava areas. This would be more of an incentive for players to explore the environment.
Notch stated at Minecraft Con that villages would be neutral, hostile or friendly. Part of my suggestion is that the player is allowed to barter with the villages and the NPCs want the unique resources that are found in the biomes. The player could trade the unique resources for valuables or stacks of materials. It would give the player even more of an incentive to explore and more reason to interact with the villages.
So TL;DR:
-Biomes have unique resources
-NPCs want to trade for those resources
-Player explores the area, barters with NPCs.
Tell me what you think! Maybe we can expand on it.
EDIT: Perhaps you could also link it to mobs? Like the NPCs want pelts from polar bears which are only in the Snowy regions.
I know its been said but I'll say it again. Use that gold to make yourself a gold hoe. They have the same durability as diamond hoes, so make one and you're set for life. Then just store the rest of your gold for decorations or use it to make sexy gold pants.
I enjoy farming quite a bit. It really adds to that feeling of success you get when you build your new base and be a self sustaining miner. I can't wait until its expanded upon.
