You've either port forwarded wrong, or your firewall is blocking the connection.
First, allow minecraft and java through your firewall, then see if people can connect. If that doesn't work, then you most likely port forwarded wrong, or their firewalls are blocking them from accessing your server.

    To port forward
1.Since you know your IPv4, open your router/modem settings. On a windows PC, you can do this by typing in "ipconfig" without quotes.

2.Type the number you find in the box (your number may be different, and most likely will be different) in the internet browser you use (internet explorer, chrome, etc).

It'll look something like this. *DISCLAIMER* This is most likely NOT what your page will look like, it's just an example.
    3. Go to a page that looks something similar to this.

Again, this is most likely not what it will look like for you, but it is very similar.
    4. Now, basically you just need to follow the example for minecraft, the first entry. In the box asking for a port(s), put 25565. Have it set to TCP&UDP, have the IPv4 address set to the one you already know, and then you should be good to go.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

Your IPv4 address in the first picture is the one to the right of IP address, so in this case, your IPv4 is 192.168.2.2
In windows XP, they don't specify the IPv4 address, so you have to know the layout of the IPv4. Every IPv4 address looks like
    192.168.x.x

Hope that didn't sound confusing at all :P

There's not really any easy way. There is a way, but it really depends on how much you want the stuff, and there's a chance you won't be able to get back all your files, or you'll get part of them, and that won't really work either. I'd suggest just starting over fresh, because most likely, you'll recover some of the files, and not all of them, and you'll have to restart the server either way.

You need to forward your internal IP, not your external.
open CMD, type ipconfig, then depending on whether you're wired or wirelessly connected to your router/modem, go to that section, look for IPv4 address, then the number to the right, replace the external IP you entered with your IPv4 address.

I'm not sure why, but if wirelessly works, and if you don't have any connection issues with people lagging and such, then I suggest going that route. :)

    Quote from darkstarsbright

try opening to lan and then give the ip to your friends to type into direct connect use to have that poblem aswell but that fixed it. :)

LAN means the same network, and these people are not on the same network, so that would not work.

I don't think using hamachi and a LAN world will work, I'd suggest downloading the minecraft server software from http://minecraft.net/download and then setting up the hamachi server that way. You should be able to just have him join your hamachi group, then he should be able to connect to your server if you set up all the IPs and such right.

Do you mind if I try connecting to see for myself what happens? I see you've posted a very detailed thread, which will help a lot, but if I could try to connect and see what happens, that'll help.

posted a message on Can't connect to my LAN Please help
I think what he means is that he put up an offline server, which is unnecessary.

What you need to do is open your world that you want to play on on one computer, then press ESC and click "Open to LAN". Then in the chat window in the bottom left, it'll say an IP address then a port number. On the computer you want to use to connect to the server, type in the IPv4 of the computer hosting, then a colon and then the port, in this format. 192.168.x.x:XXXX(X) (You might have a 4 or 5 digit port)

Sorry if these instructions aren't clear, if you need something explained, feel free to ask! :)

posted a message on How to port forward through two routers?
    Quote from swatforest

Most of the time you port forward from a website that your internet service provider has to allow you to change things on your internet. I have AT&T and I would go on there and port forward. Also when port forwarding you chose the computer the server will run on. So really you don't have to port forward twice, in fact you can (at least on AT&T) only port forward one computer at a time. Now it maybe different for your internet provider. If you could provide us who provides your internet and also do this http://speedtest.net. The speed test is not info we need but will tell you how big of a server you can run. Tell me your internet provider and ill get back to you what you need to do to port forward.

I'm pretty sure knowing the ISP has nothing to do with port fowarding, as it's in the router, not the modem that your ISP gave to you where the port forwarding occurs. I may be wrong, but that's how it is for me.

The way I access the settings to portforward and such is (assuming you're on a windows computer) typing ipconfig into command prompt, going down to the wireless section (or ethernet depending on your connection settings), then looking for my default gateway. Once I get that, I type that into my browser and my router settings page comes up.

This may not apply for everyone, but that's what I do.

just follow this link http://www.whatsmyip.org/ copy the ip address it gives you make that the ip for the server. when you go into your server folder and click the server doc. there is a spot to put an ip put the ip you got from this website in there save and start up your server. when you log into minecraft put the ip you got from this website in the spot that you put ips when adding a new multiplayer server then you should see your server online and will be able to run it from your pc not your laptop

Waffle, just stay out of this, it's clear you don't understand what's going on.

In the Command Prompt, it says "*****Failed to bind port!"

As to your problem, a few screenshots of what comes up when you type ipconfig in command prompt would help a lot. The "failed to bind port" error is because you're using the wrong IPv4 address most likely, and to find that out, we'll need to see those screenshots so we can help you.

when you go on your desktop go to google and type in whats my ip and it will click on the first site it will give you an ip use that as the ip that people connect to and it should work fine. most of the time this is your IP v4 address. then just run the server and give people that ip to connect to.

Yeah, you clearly have no idea what an IPv4 address is. IPv4 is used by your router to identify which computer is which on your local network. The external IP address is what is used to connect to the server, and it can be thought of as your computer's "home address" on the internet, not on your local network. Your external IP is totally different from your IPv4 address, and getting these mixed up will result in a whole bunch of problems.
