Relax. Win10 doesn't do mods.

(The java version, which does do mods, isn't included in this update).

It's easy to get confused. You kinda have to be careful when you use the term "PC" these days (which used to mean just the java version). There are two editions of MC (java & Win10) that can play on a computer. But they're totally separate games, and both can be installed on your computer, and even run, at the same time.

But this does bring up something interesting I hadn't thought about! Win10 doesn't do "mods", but it does do "add-ons" (the "newer" way to modify and customize the game). That may be the reason Xbox and Switch need whole new games instead of just an update- they'll not only have to add cross-play and infinite worlds (huge changes in themselves), but Xbox (and Switch) also have to include the ability to use add-ons.

So now the question becomes "If you play with join up on a Win10 world with add-ons and you're using an Xbox (that doesn't have them) will you be using them too?"

At this point we don't know. There's a lot of details about how all this is gonna work they haven't told us yet (and are probably still working out themselves).

Off the top of my head, I think any cross-play will be vanilla-to-vanilla only to avoid confusion (any installed add-ons will be ignored). But Realms's Win10 allows add-ons in a Realms world, so I could be wrong. We'll see....

Step 1: Acquire Mojang. I'm sure if you ask Notch he'll tell you he's been approached many times over the years by many people to sell Mojang/Minecraft to them. When it was the right time, and the money was right, he did.
Step 2: While maintaining and providing new features for Java Minecraft, (lulling the fools into a sense of complacency), create a brand new "PC" version of Minecraft ("Windows 10 Edition"), completely independent of the Java version. Of course they did. That's what most of us wanted(!), and that is what was needed.
Step 3: Combine this new "PC" version of Minecraft with all console and mobile versions, both in featureset and interactions. Yea! That's a problem?
Step 4: Swap names: Instead of the console, mobile, and Windows 10 versions being the "external" versions of Minecraft, they become the main versions, while the main version becomes the "Java Edition." For years all us "other" edition players have had subtitled names. We never felt like 2nd class citizens (even though the java version players kept reminding us we were... constantly). We never complained. It was simply understood that the subtitles were needed for edition identification. Now the tables have turned. We are unified. We can all play together. We are Minecraft. It's the java version that is different and alone (but it's always been different and alone).
Step 5: Use the name swap to see the playerbase for Minecraft shift to the "new" versions; as more players buy "Minecraft," the "Minecraft: Java Edition" players will attrition, due to changing interests or because their friends are on the "main edition". Agreed.
Step 6: Discontinue the "Java Edition" once the playerbase has dropped to become a minor segment of the now "main-heavy" playerbase. After all, Microsoft will need to focus their development on the Main version of the game, where the money is. Again, true. It probably won't happen immediately, but it will happen eventually. Mac, Linux, etc. users will simply have to dual-boot into Windows and play Win10.

Embrace. Extend. Extinguish. I'm just glad there are other voxel games being developed in the open-source world. True, but there's many other worthy "clones" to play... and they don't have to be voxel. The other option is to give in and be assimilated. You might (gasp) actually like the new Minecraft, and this is just the beginning. No telling where Minecraft will go now- and that's the point.

All this is coming. And it's not just shaders.

Too late. Decision made. Done deal.

Java owners had more than a year to get Win10 for free. Many took advantage of the offer, some didn't.

Some said "The java version is the best one, will always be the best one, and will live on forever!" and "Win10 will never be as good as the original, it's the same as PE!"

Now instead of some saying "Why can't Win10/PE have the same stuff as the java version?" some of you are saying "Why can't the java version have the same stuff as Win10/PE?"

The writing has been on the wall for a long time....

Because of the conversion to "infinite" worlds, etc., for Xbox and Switch owners they may have to have made a "new game" (a simple update would be so massive they couldn't do it all with just one update).

If you remember, in order to keep playing your 360 world when the One came out, they included a one-time, one-way conversion option with the One edition. At this early stage, I'd think whether they do that again is anyone's guess. There's a lot of questions, but no answers.... yet. I'm sure more info is coming. Personally, I'd hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst.

* Aren't all the other editions "real" MCs? Since it will be "different" than the other versions, shouldn't it have a "different" name, if nothing else to avoid confusion?

* No, this won't "force" you to use skin packs. You can make your own custom skin for Win10 (for free). https://support.xbox.com/en-US/games/game-titles/custom-skins-minecraft-windows-10-edition

* Other editions have always had unique content and updates and stuff that the java edition didn't get or have. This is just another one. Nothing has changed with the java version, so it's not like you lost anything. If you don't play the other editions, what does it matter, really?

1- Win10 is an App, not an application. Different animal.

2- Win10 doesn't do mods. However, if you want to modify/customize the game it has add-ons instead.

3- Java MC may not be included because of java (it's different than the others). It may be too hard to do compared to the others. To say it's "a no brainer that PC be the first" maybe ignoring reality. Maybe Mojang's view of where all the different editions are and the direction each should go might be different than yours.

Whatever. It is what it is. It's a done deal, decision made. Some people will gain, some won't.

I'm old enough to remember the same "doom and gloom" (almost word for word) when Windows came out and DOS was being phased out. And every time there's a new OS version, we hear the same ole "I'll never switch!" or "OMG! What's gonna happen to my _____?". New things come, old things get replaced. You'll deal with it.

Minecraft is growing up. It's changing, evolving. (Sheesh, what took them so long?)

What's funny is all this whining about MC changing is coming from the same people who can't wait for the next update so the game changes, downloads the latest snapshot as soon as it comes out to get the latest change, and mods the heck out of the game to change it. Very confusing. Well, now a lot of us have our wish. The game itself is changing, and in fundamental ways that goes way beyond what a mere mod could do.

In addition, I've been thinking some more on it (I heard that!)

I could be wrong, but this means that Win10/PE/One, etc. must all have matching features & world sizes to work together (like infinite worlds). But it (should) also mean:

1- They all would have to get the same update at the same time.

2- They all can use add-ons (the "other" way to modify/customize the game), who's main advantage is add-ons aren't version specific like mods are. They'll keep right on working even if the game gets updated, so there's no reason to play older versions (missing out on new features and bug fixes).

Or not. At this early stage there was no mention of how add-ons will be handled. I do know it would be quite difficult to write your own add-on on a console. Maybe they'll restrict consoles to purchased add-ons to keep things consistent. We don't know how they're gonna handle the add-on thing... yet.

3- I'm thinking that some "exclusive" features that are unique to a platform will remain, like split-screen for consoles.

Why would you want to?

I doubt they know. As we can see, a lot of work has already been done, but I'm sure there's more to do and the timeline to release at this point is "flexible", to say the least.

Like Christmas, even if we knew when it's coming, it wouldn't make it come any sooner.

* I've said for a long time, "If you've hooked your wagon to the java version, it's being pulled by a dying horse."

* All this griping about Microsoft is silly and uncalled for. Look at it another way: what if Sony or Nintendo bought Mojang? Would they continue to carry on Windows versions along like MS has? Could they restrain themselves from messing up the other editions of MC like MS has? Would Sony allow a Switch edition to be made?

* All this wailing and gnashing of teeth is based on one simple thing: change. For some, any change to their beloved java MC is a Bad Thing, even something as inconsequential as a name change. (Come on, it will avoid a lot of confusion, won't it?) But for the majority of us this change is a very Good Thing.

* Bottom Line: like it or not, it was MS that bought Mojang. What did you think was going to happen? Win10, PE, and Xbox players... for once it's our turn. For once, we get the better things first. Java people have had more than a year to get Win10 for free. If they didn't take advantage of that opportunity, that's their own fault.

* Obviously, Mojang, and 4J, have been working very hard for months behind our backs to surprise us with something special. And if you think cross-play, graphics, and servers weren't enough, I'm pretty sure they'll be other improvements in this update too, like maybe the much requested armor stands, banners, coordinates, or stained glass.

This is not the "beginning of the end"- I get the feeling this is just a taste of what will come.

* In order for Sony consoles to play with Xbox consoles, they must sign on to Live. Sony refused to let their players do that, (MS offered). They also won't let Xbox players sign on to PSN. So all the Sony consoler's can blame Sony, not MS, for not being "compatible". In other words, you made a decision which system to get, now you have to live with that decision, along with the good and the bad.

* The java version won't be abandoned- Mojang won't forget Mac, Unix, Linux, etc., users. However, MS has had nothing to do with the java version. It's "business as usual", and Mojang is running the show (MS has kept a "hands off" attitude towards it). I would be much more worried about "abandonment" if I were a 360 or ps3 owner (and no, they can't handle this update).

* Don't you guys get what this means: that in order for all the cross-play with Xbox One to work, the Xbox One version has to be brought up to Win10/PE level (or vice versa), for instance, the inclusion of infinite worlds and other matching features!

* Why in the world do you guys consider finally having one unified, improved MC that can be played by users on many platforms (together!) a Bad Thing? Sure, the java people are upset (jealous?) because they're missing out.... but the java version has always been on it's own ever since Day One. Some may have to face the fact that the "Best Version" title may change hands.

* The Bad News is the java players are being ignored when it comes to this update. But the Good News is, nothing is changing and you won't lose a thing. Since you don't play the other versions, why should it matter?

* They haven't said that the 360 & ps3 won't continue to be updated. Personally, I don't see why they should though.

Overall, it's exciting times for Minecraft, and things that have been wished for (and needed) for years is finally happening.

Way to go Mojang (and 4J)!

Maps are useless. Glad maps were added, but 1) they align East, not North, 2) no coordinates, 3) no marker (like the consoles) showing where you are on the map or what direction you're facing, 4) zoom level is too small. Other than an aerial view (which you can see a lot more by flying up or climbing a hill), what are they good for? Hopefully the next update will make them more useful.
