posted a message on What is wrong with my squid farm?

I have made two attempts to make a squid farm, and neither of them have given me much luck. One of them obviously failed because it did not take place in an ocean biome. I then started to make a new farm that took loads more hard work, and I even started running out of dirt when making it. Dirt of all things to run out of.

Here are the details of the farm:

    - It takes place in a deep lukewarm ocean

    - The water is present in layers 62-46

    - Most of the water is flowing, the rest is source blocks from the original ocean that has bubble columns all over it coming from bubble columns

This is based on information from the Minecraft Wiki, saying that squids can spawn in flowing water and bubble columns. It also said it can spawn in river and ocean biomes, which I then assumed that it includes the deep lukewarm ocean and other ocean biomes that aren't just named "ocean".

Here are the pictures of the farm and my AFK spots that I have chosen.

The squids are meant to either spawn in the source blocks on the far side, or in the flowing water on the magma block floor.

This one is placed the opposite direction of which the water is flowing, meaning the squids would move away from me.

For this one, squids would be flowing towards me.

In AFK spot 1, I got absolutely nothing. I heard that mobs stop moving after they are 36 blocks away from the player, and I thought it meant that the mob's pathfinding would be disabled and water would still act on the entity like normal. It now seems apparent that they literally may not move or even take damage at all.

I created AFK spot 2, the dirt tower room, to hopefully fix the problems regarding squids moving away from me. I thought that as long as I was, as far as the X and Z axis goes, in range of the 36 block limit for moving mobs, they would continue moving along the magma blocks and having their drops flow to the hoppers that led to the output chest. I went into this room and went to school, allowing my automatic squid farm to run for the length of the school day. I came back to some tropical fish, salmon, cod, and 2 ink sacs. I did also have a gunpowder and a dirt, but that's irrelevant. So if things were spawning, I was sure that I did not get only one squid from more than 7 hours of AFKing. My theory for why I got so few things is that the game might be taking your X, Y, and Z position and adding together the distance of your position from another area. As a result, some of the area of my farm was outside of the 36 block range, and did not allow for the squids to move. But now that I type this, I realize now that I built the pillar 24 blocks higher than the very top of the source water, and leaving the farm's floor much farther away. This may have caused the mobs to stop moving as soon as they were pulled down enough by the magma blocks. Though, I don't know how I would have gotten fish and 2 ink sacs if that is the case.

To solve this problem, I made a new AFK room underwater. This was positioned so that squids would spawn 24 blocks away from me in either the bubble columns or the water flowing towards me. That way, the mobs would not stop moving, and they would die and have their items picked up by the hoppers. I ran an AFK session overnight, and I got nothing. A pufferfish did kill me through my door, so that may be the problem, but my items were still there when I came to where I died, so it could have happened less than 5 minutes prior to me going to check on the farm. But if that were the case, I feel like I definitely would have gotten loot before I died. Perhaps you must respawn before the 5 minute timer starts, or the game preemptively loads the chunks of your spawn after a while after dying instead of keeping the chunk of your death loaded and letting the items despawn. I don't know what could prevent squids from spawning when I used this spot.

When I was typing this, I came up with a new spot for AFKing. It is approximately of the center of the chunk that I chose to make this farm in, it is 24 blocks above the floor of magma blocks, and I also fixed an issue where I allowed water to flow on the hoppers. I shouldn't allow squids to swim past the hoppers, otherwise they won't even die and drop their ink sacs. I won't expect squids to spawn in the bubble column because it is too close to me, but hopefully this AFK session in this spot above the farm will allow squids to spawn 24 blocks below me and take damage from the magma blocks. If the magma blocks don't kill them, they will halt at the hoppers that no longer contain water and they will take extra damage from asphyxiation. This is all theoretical, and I still will not be surprised if I wake up tomorrow to absolutely nothing in the chest.

While I believe I am figuring out a few problems and solutions, I don't know exactly for sure. If somebody knows anything, I would be pleased to hear any information or things that I may not have thought of when making this farm or my AFK spots. I want to fix as many problems as possible and optimize this farm so that I can get fast and easy ink sacs.

FNAF, Sonic, and Undertale. Not all of the people in those fanbases, just some. FNAF, from what I've seen, is a bunch of fanart of shipping and Chika boobs, which I find are cringy enough, but it may be the most tolerable of the four. Sonic, I have seen some weird ship art and it generally seems to be pretty fetishy and edgy. When I think of Undertale, the first thing that comes into my mind is Toriel inflation and not much else. I did not mention bronies, but yes, the stereotyped brony is quite cringy. Though, being on a brony forum, most people there seem to be quite great. They are very nice and I've never had a problem with anyone there. Some of them are stereotyped, but I just leave those people alone and let them do their thing.
