If you want a simple answer as to why Minecraft has been lagging far more than it used to prior to 1.8, is because of the new lighting system, found primarily in LWJGL.jar, which is a horribly unoptimized mess. Fortunately, Jeb has recognized this and plans to fix it sometime in the near future. See here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Upcoming_features
So, hopefully soon, Minecraft will begin running almost like it used to when it had 1.7 lighting.
And unfortunately, as far as I know, there are no mods out there that modify and optimize LWJGL, so we'll just have to wait for now.
As stated earlier, the performance bug that's occurring to some people is most likely happening due to Minecraft not liking some of your hardware after the recent update. Jeb will probably attempt to fix this.
It can only really be hardware incompatibility since
1. I've had quite the performance boost
2. People claim to have not changed their computer when they updated
The only things you could do is wait, use Optifine, or if your just plain unsatisfied and impatient, find the malfunctioning component in your computer and replace it with something that works with Minecraft.
Although I could perhaps create a long list of ideas, I'll make a generalization of what I want implemented.
Basically, I think the game needs more dungeons, and with those dungeons some worthwhile loot. What we have now is dungeons that have only moss stone, cocoa beans, and saddles as special goodies, and Strongholds with minor prizes and an End Portal that leads to a pointless boss fight.
What I want to see is first off, add some actual loot to the game, perhaps a neat weapon or two. Second of all, a wider variety in dungeons would be nice. I certainly am hoping that's what they're gonna end up doing in the Deserts in 1.3, and even past that. I'm not asking for any new bosses, or even mobs. All I want is a reason to go beyond my castle and it's labyrinth of strip mines asides getting a cat, or pillaging a village out of boredom.
There isn't a different block for each possible state an entire block's space could be in with the little blocks mod, so I don't see why this would be a problem.
The way that mod is coded is extremely different from how half-slabs work, and isn't implemented in Vanilla Minecraft. It would also make no sense to try to duplicate that coding JUST to half slabs to stack with different types.
1. Jon is still working on AI, and his #1 priority since day one was the villagers, so we'll see some of that
2. The Bukkit team has been hired to develop the modding API, so I almost guarantee that's coming next release
3, I bet Jeb will be pulling in some new ideas, like he did with Jungles, and I almost guarantee it'll start with deserts. Since there's a few new, unused block textures that look like Sandstone with Hieroglyphics on them.
All in all, I'm looking forward to 1.3 more than I was 1.2
I first noticed this dramatic performance change as Minecraft went from 1.7.3 to 1.8, however, I must admit they do seem to have done a good job in 1.2, as the performance on Far seems to have gone up to almost equal what I got when using Optifine in 1.1
It really depends on the computer your using though, as some incompatibilities and glitches exist with certain hardware, especially if it's a bit outdated.
"Desert Ruins" should spawn twice per world and be very far apart and away from spawn, be in random deserts and contain the new boss mob.
IMO, I don't think we really need further boss mobs right now, and the annoyingly low spawn rate of strongholds
already gets to me.
But anyways, there should be an extensive dungeon, with several new mobs, and some extremely special loot at the end. Perhaps part of a broken Pharaoh's scepter, that when pieced together after going through several different temple types, will yield a staff with a rather godly power.
Maybe, it can conjure up a temporary army of the undead that's on your side? Of course by army, I mean about a half-dozen.
Well, I can't see Testificates becoming Terminators (but god that would be a hilarious addition)
As I said earlier, perhaps a different class of Testificate with arms and a sword. That's probably what's gonna come out of this, but then again, we're talking about Mojang, lol.
Either way, we'll see in about 12 hours what this really is.
I can't see them holding a sword or anything, with those folded arms of theirs, so I wonder what they'll have as a defense. Maybe new Warrior class villagers? I'd love to see something like that!
Another app for my bro this time:

Since I have friends, hopefully the entire night
4. What do you think will be the cause of your first death on this server?
Getting lost and dieing alone D:
Did you read the New Players: MUST READ tips? If not, you will probably die quickly.

And it's half-built because of the chunk height, not my lack of MC skill, so Jeb, hurry up and roll on in 1.2 already!
