posted a message on How to mod minecraft on a Mac
Thanks for the tutorial. Would you happen to know why when I try to use the archive utility it turns the jar into a zip folder instead of a normal folder? And then when I try to unzip it it just turns back into a jar file again and I can't open it.

Depending on how I change the preferences it turns it into either a zip folder titled:
    minecraft.jar.cpgz
    minecraft.jar.cpio
    or
    minecraft.jar.zip
but it will never turn it into a normal file. If I click on any of these it just creates a copy of the original jar file.

posted a message on Jar Tool can no longer delete META-INF
Recently I've encountered a problem with jar tool (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/77278-macmod-minecraft-jar-tool/) and I'm not sure if it is a problem with the program itself because it has always worked in the past.
Whenever I recompile minecraft.jar after installing mods the META-INF folder reappears and it acts as if it was never deleted, and then when I start Minecraft it will freeze on the opening screen. This has never happened in the past so I'm assuming it has to do with a Minecraft update. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Quote from AtomicStryker

It's disturbing how many people would rather fuzz with manually inserting class files over using a one click tool.

I would love to use the patcher, but until I figure out why it isn't working on my computer I guess I'm fine sticking to the extra 4 to 5 minutes of manually inserting the class files.

Are you planning to have the optifine compatible non-minecraft patcher version finished now that optifine is out? I've had trouble getting minecraft patcher to work but would like to wait to have both optifine and dynamic lights before updating to 1.1.

EDIT: Oh nevermind. I have seen your post above^ Thank you.

posted a message on Fog as a Biome-Influenced Weather Pattern
I think it could be interesting if fog was given a height limit. If you have ever hiked down from a mountain then you have seen what an amazing sight it is when the earth beneath you is blanketed in fog.

This would be incredible if this could be implemented somehow.

posted a message on An Enderman History
It was late at night and I was a bit bored so I decided to write this little story about the history of Endermen:

The Endermen: Long ago there was a group of humans from continents in the southern region of the world. They were oppressed by the more advanced civilizations from the north and so many of them fled into the deep dark caverns of minecraftia, where they would occasionally venture to the surface to resupply food and lumber. For ages they lived underground and grew accustomed to the darkness. They became masters at mining and building with stone so they constructed large underground strongholds to protect themselves from the outside world. They despised those from the surface and would imprison and usually torture and kill any explorer unlucky enough to venture into a stronghold. They destroyed all their wooden structures because they reminded them of the surface and with this wood they began to form massive libraries where their researchers would store thousands of books. The subterranean race grew very advanced, but they still felt to close to the surface and wanted to escape further. After thousands of years underground their race had spread out to great distances with multiple strongholds scattered through the underworld. Their scientists were discovering something incredible that would allow them to escape Minecraftia and the memory of their past oppression: an alternate dimension. Construction began on a portal that would lead them out of their strongholds and into a new world. The dark energies of the experiments morphed many of the scientists into frightening creatures. Tall, black, slender creatures with glowing eyes. They were the only ones capable of entering the newly formed portal. This turned out to be a perfect safeguard to keep regular humans out. By making a sacrifice of their original human form they all willingly morphed into the slender creatures and entered the portal, leaving Minecraftia behind and sealing themselves in the new dimension.

The Rediscovery and Release: Hundreds of years later miners came across the strongholds now worn down by age and erosion and inhabited by monsters. When they discovered the portal room they were fascinated and tried everything they could to activate it and discover its hidden treasures. Through a series of risky experiments they managed to activate the portal very briefly. It shook the world with a mighty force and threatened to collapse the cavern on the miners. They grew frightened and tried to flee. The portal flickered and spat out bright glowing sparks and then everything went dark. The miners were trapped hundreds of feet below the surface with no way out. There was a whispering and the miners were soon surrounded by dozens of glowing eyes. The creatures walked around as if they had no idea what had just happened. They ignored the miners, until one miner spoke out asking who they were. The endermen were furious because they had spent ages trying to disconnect themselves from the world and with the miners acknowledgment they knew that they were no longer safe. They killed the miners to ensure that they would not be discovered by anyone else. Because of the miners’ folly of reactivating the portal enderman now walk the earth again unaware that they have been unwillingly returned to the world they despise, until someone acknowledges them. If you ever acknowledge the existence of an endermen there is no escape. They will hunt down any witness and destroy them.

posted a message on "Downgrade" button in launcher
While there are people who would like to downgrade, I'm pretty sure most people would prefer the current version which would make it an unnecessary addition. It is easy enough to replace the minecraft jar yourself.

Even my mac where I have to actually type in the entire extension myself in order to find the folder since it became invisible in my application support folder.

By the way, a good tip for mac users is drag your minecraft folder into your shortcuts so you never lose track of it again.

If people are desperate to downgrade. They'll find a way.

posted a message on You're going to have to realize playing a beta is a job.
I see many people reporting their dissatisfactions in the form of complaints. By playing a beta it is your job to report bugs and features that you dislike. Not everyone likes having a job, but that is what you are doing by playing an unfinished version of a game. So by all means complain, but make sure you are doing it in a way that will get your voice heard. That being said, I'll report a few of the things I see as needing some change in the future.

The nether looks pretty awesome now, but it seems that many of the new changes make it lag much worse than the normal world. The new mobs seem like an excellent addition and the ghasts have become slightly less common which I have been in favor of. When you get over the new mobs I think the nether strongholds become a little bit dull. They could use a few more details, but the amount of features added in this short time is impressive.

The oceans are just massive. I may have gotten bad seeds or something, but there definitely should be some kind of change. What I do like is the large islands consisting of one type of biome, and the occasional underwater mine shafts that you can see sit up from the surface. I think they could use either I slightly smaller size or generate large island more often because I have filled an entire map with nothing but a vast expanse of water. At least one swimming hostile mob would be nice as well as possible models for fish.

Swamp biomes seem to generate much to roughly. The change between swamp and other biomes needs to be made a little bit smoother. The brief transition between blue and green water is pretty bad right now as well as trees that spawn halfway between biomes.

Endermen have been kind of buggy since they were first released. They need to be more sensitive to being looked at and need to be more effective at following you. They do not function well underground at all because of their 3 block height and will often disappear entirely, possibly from teleporting into a wall. They could possibly a little bit slower because it can be annoying when they teleport behind you and just rub up against you and push you around. Once they are at point blank distance they can be a little too difficult to locate.

Snowmen sometimes won't throw snowballs at mobs.

I've had a few instances where mobs had trouble jumping over a height of one block.

That is what I've seen so far.

posted a message on Endermen need a fix
I like the ideas of Endermen stealing away light. That way in a cave it would be hard to see anything other than their glowing eyes. How scary would it be if you wander into a dark corridor somewhere deep underground, but when you try to lay down a torch, nothing happens. You hear an ominous whispering that sounds like a distant echo, but you know the enemy is somewhere right beside you. You'd try to look around for the unseen enemy, but only looking with your peripheral vision.

Then when you accidentally stare it straight in the eye it would freeze. Everything would be silent but then when you take a step back he disappears with a menacing shriek. The whispering returns, but you can't see the enemy. You turn around to see him slowly approaching with his long slender arms reaching out. It's too late, he grabs you and holds you down. You constantly swing your sword trying to break free, but there is no time. Other creatures are closing in on you. You are surrounded and doomed.

Well there's my story explanation of what I think they should do. I also kinda think of them as creatures from the nether. I think requiring ender pearls to line your Hell Gates would be an interesting addition. But their name kinda implies that they come from the endlands rather than the nether.

posted a message on Am I the only one who wants new ores added?
I would love to see some knew forms of metal. I think 1.9 could have some great ways of putting new metals to use.

    Building Materials
Steel- Since it is made by combining iron and carbon steel could be made by giving iron and coal to a smithy in a town. He would have the materials necessary to combine the two into steel alloy. This could be used for stronger tools and armor. Possibly better minecart tracks.
Copper- Used for pipes to draw up water or lava. Could be useful for drawing water for farming.
Silver- Could be used for mirrors. A conductor for some sort of redstone circuitry advantage. Lightning rod?
Zinc- I think this is an unnecessary addition. But if other people were to want it then it could be used as some kind of fuel. Zinc powder is often used as fuel for model rocket engines. If lanterns are added then this could be a very useful material for making them as it would burn very bright.

    Currency
    Copper- Cheapest form of currency
    Silver- Mid tier currency
    Gold- Higest Currency

I don't think you could get much more complex then this or you risk making things very confusing. One final material I could see added is a type of crystal for the crystalline caves that were suggested by someone a while ago. I believe Notch was considering it. It would create colorful cave colors when light is shined on it. I haven't thought of any practical uses for it yet.
