And are we allowed to sell/purchase fan made creations relating to the game? ;D -

Ooh, and I really love how Gestankfaust used the fence around the inner balconies. Super neat touch.

Golly... he might have a point. Just LOOK at them... They're both gray, a very uncommon color for cobble. They both consist of varying sized rectangular shapes, which is unusual for any kind of stonework. And most damning of all.... pixels. Steelfeathers used pixels for the cobble texture, JUST LIKE DRFROZENFIRE. They even use the SAME NUMBER OF PIXELS!!!
My mind is blown. I really respected you Steelfeathers, or should we call you Stealfeathers now?
Seriously, I believe there are only two words that can form an appropriate reply to the above accusation:
Lol, wut?
Or perhaps, "Are you drunk?" would be a working alternative.

Thanks! And YAY for more of this house! The original artist is fantastic.
If you do use it, the original designer may like to link or view your rendition. He was asking for links to people's 3D builds, but I'm not sure if he'll include builds from games.

Notes: I invedited in some glowstone and netherrack. The world I built this on was defunct. I had been playing legit until it crashed, which turned my main area into a snow biome. While I had lots of the basic materials on hand, I'd never built a portal to the nether and was too lazy to mine up obsidian for the portal. Also, it was based off a picture from DeviantArt that I adored (Artist: Cuculus, Picture: Medieval House Concept) rather than my own work, so maybe some points off for subpar originality?

Continue working on it, but focus on integrating a style or theme to the pack that each block will follow. Working with a theme may be easier than relying on a personal artist style to differentiate you. (Some random examples: Quilt Craft - everything looks like it's made of cloth patches, or pack based on the textures of your favorite video game.)
Look at other packs (both simple and detailed) for both inspiration and to avoid styles that have already been used too frequently. Visit some of the texture pack tutorials that people have been kind enough to write up; they're incredibly useful. Also think about reading some of the texture pack reviews people post up. They can offer a lot of insight on what works and what doesn't.
Then, after you've worked on this some more to the point where it looks original, post your new work here and re-bump this thread. Explain what you've been doing to improve and people will most likely offer tips and comments to help you along. This forum is generally super friendly as long as you show you're really interested in putting out the best work you can.

Sadly, they often don't. Many folk only view the first several pages of a forum. Super popular texture packs that have been around a while are bumped because people know how to find them if they fall off the first few pages. But packs that haven't been around long enough to build up a following often fall into obscurity before people even see them. At that point, the artist either has to bump his own thread (frowned upon) or needs to advertise his pack in other ways.
So many potentially awesome packs are discontinued because "Simple Pack reiteration #732" or "Doku Remix #1034" bump them off the first page and into obscurity. The artist loses heart when he mistakenly believes his work isn't good enough for people to be interested in.
I just don't see the point to repeating the same basic design over and over and over again. There are tons of "simple" packs, most of which are rehashes of the same basic theme (the default texture pack reduced to flat areas of color).
Simple packs such as yours aren't bad, but they ARE redundant.
You can make a simple pack that is not boring as hell due to repetition; people have done it and continue to do it. But if you don't provide anything new, your pack will be forgotten and worse... it will likely take a unique pack down with it.
Don't you want people to see your pack in a screenshot and think to themselves "Hey, that's Gregorius' pack; I'd recognize his style anywhere."? Or would you rather people see your work in a screenshot and not even notice, because 50 million people have already done the same thing?

I gotta get rid of the scaffolding, but... but... I need to build scaffolding to get to the scaffolding. Argh!
I'll try and get pics up by tonight. This was hella fun. :biggrin.gif:

armslegsstubs of the nearest creeper. That's the last time I build on a cliff for a contest. :tongue.gif:The scaffolding I've built up for picture taking is starting to look like something out of an M.C. Escher piece.

It's not double dipping.
Having both an option to donate and an ad.fly link (As well as a direct download link, preferably, but that's at the discretion of the artist.) is much more considerate to the people who do want to support the artist in question. Not everyone has ready cash they can throw at someone, or an easy way to send money over the internet (kids often don't have credit cards, for example.). An ad.fly link provides these people with additional options.
I ALWAYS use ad.fly links when provided by the artists I like. It's an easy way to show appreciation and I very much wish all the good artists would provide the option as well as a donate button.
Of course, when I see remix packs or really crappy packs (looking at you, majority of simple packs) that force people into using ad.fly links... I just laugh, roll my eyes and move on without downloading. Heck, sometimes you get retards who put their pictures under an ad.fly link. Those are generally money grabs with no real interest in producing good work or the "artist" in question has no concept of how terribly he compares to other artists on the site (special snowflake syndrome). They have the right to use ad.fly, but that doesn't mean any reasonable number of people will click the links.

Gradient maps can be fun to use (and super useful when applied subtly), but instead of using one of the default gradients provided by Photoshop, tweek them or create your own. If you take into account the light and dark areas of the blocks and adjust your colors to match up (Lighten some colors, darken others depending on where they are on the gradient, and perhaps remove some colors so the eye isn't frantically jumping from one drastic color to another.), it will still provide a fun rainbow effect without making everything hard to distinguish.
Edit:
To be fair... basically, yes, that's what you did. After opening the default terrain.png and resizing it using nearest neighbor, it takes exactly 6 clicks of the mouse to create your EXACT terrain.png. And that includes hitting okay twice on the gradient map menus.

Heheh, I was thinking of some catacombs used for burial - the ones where they basically used bones as legos and got creative with the walls. The more distinct bone design of your soulsand can work really well in getting that particular look.

I'd also really like to participate in the contest if time permits. Sounds hella fun. :biggrin.gif:

I don't want to be harsh, but you do not yet have the skills to make use of high quality pencils. It would be a waste of money - expensive pencils won't magically make your art better.
Just pick up a cheap pack for now ($5-$10). You don't even need a huge variety of colors as a smaller color palette will force you to learn how to adjust/mix colors by layering strokes. Practice shading with different pencil strokes and pressures, learn how to build up color and darkness instead of just pressing hard, and try to make use of the background for highlights instead of disregarding it entirely in your composition (generally, lightly colored pencils are great for highlights on colored paper - not over dark pencil strokes).
THEN move on to a more professional quality pencil type.
