Yes you need to forward the default port for minecraft (25565) to the computers IP on your local network your using to run the server.

Problem solved after enabling "vsync", apparently there is a issues with the amount of FPS my computer can do and minecraft, as stated by mclovin. Right after enabling vsync I got a steady 60 FPS instead of 600 FPS and no more screen flashing :D. Game runs very smooth now with no lag what so ever!
