"Well that was creepy. Good thing ambient noises don't actually mean anything other than, hey, it's dark down here!"
I honestly don't get why people wig out over 'em

Easy/Normal. Peaceful if I'm building something very big and don't want mobs destroying it or distracting me.

posted a message on Just died in lava
I once fell in lava that I poured out of my own lava bucket, losing tons of gold and iron (my caves are suspiciously diamond-less). The annoying thing is though, I made sure to scoop the lava back up, but the weird thing lava does where it doesn't go away even if it has no source blocks kept it there without me knowing.

Mobs cannot spawn on any man-made material.

    Slabs are man-made.

not true. Mobs can spawn on any full block.
I don't believe they can spawn on top of non-full blocks (like fences or half-slabs) and they cannot spawn in water.

Vanilla is the basic icecream without adding any flavours (mods).

this is my understanding of the use of Vanilla to describe the base game content.

posted a message on Is this a chunk fail? (This time I am pretty sure it is!)
I'm going to say nope. The edges aren't right for a proper chunk error, it's just weird terrain. I actually once saw something almost exactly like this on an SMP server I was on, but it was a bit deeper and the tree was small.

I have to say no. If you had accidentally planted some TNT and exploded the side of your dome, then yes, but this is a problem with the game cutting out on you. I personally loathe lost progress, especially if the reason isn't a mistake on my part. Go ahead and fix your dome however you want.

posted a message on There is an interesting fact about wolves.
also, if you've told a wolf to sit, it won't attack things you hit, but if you get it, it'll leap into action! Discovered this one day whilst smacking sheep in my cave when a skeleton decided to visit.

posted a message on Held in Creeper explosion
just now I was exploring a cave system, using the new 1.4 patch, and I came across a lot of creepers. luckily it was only a tiny hole into the cavern they spawned in, so I could take them on one at a time. But, one creeper got near me and was hit off to the side before it finished exploding, and another creeper took its place. when I killed this second creeper, the first came back and exploded almost instantly. I noticed it looked swollen like creepers do right before they explode, and thus I have determined that it somehow "held in" the explosion.

I don't know if this is a bug or intended or something I missed, but instead of canceling the explosion, it paused it, and when it came back I had no time to do anything about it before it blew up in my face. Anyone else have this happen or know what's going on?

Eh, it's been done before. One guy had a bloggish thing called towards dawn, where we would travel east ever day and never make a shelter except during the night, and he would write about that day's advenures and have a few choice screenshots to go with it.

If it works, it's neat. But a lot of it would depend on whether or not anything actually happens and how well you can write about it.

Oh, wow. I'm sorry but no, it's deeper than you think.
It's a reference to a Native American myth (along with a few other cultures) that the Earth rests on the back of a giant turtle.

Indeedy! Prattchet got they turtle/elephants from other sources. I think the elephants were Indian. Don't remember exactly though..

posted a message on 1.4 and catching x-ray hackers
To help matters, suppose you could also look at, say, blocks of wood gotten. Someone cheating their way to diamond probably won't be interested in simpler things. If you see a guy has 20 diamonds, 50 iron, 1000 stone, and 10 wood blocks mined, something's up. Where's he getting stuff for tools and torches? A spelunker would have lots of coal and wood on their record for torches to light up big cave systems, but if a guy can make a beeline for diamond through solid rock be won't need many, and he can boost his credibility mining stone near the surface. While it's not a perfect cheater detection system, an anomaly in stats that doesn't point to reasonably normal gameplay could help someone looking for the guy who doesn't play fair.

The bottom of my world is a giant turtle shell (which is indeed on the back of a turtle).

So is mine. I assume your elephants ran away too? Mine have been gone for ages now.
