posted a message on THE PROBLEM WITH CATS [[1.2.4]]
I have to lol at "realistic" here. I have a cat (IRL), who's sometimes sitting on my bed when I want to sleep. So - I pick him up and place him elsewhere. Not difficult. And I'm hardly a superhumanly strong miner like Steve.

Also, I must lol at "this makes cats balanced" or "now you must man up and fight creepers". If you're using your cats for creeper defense, then why would you bring them inside your house at all? Make a cat-barn, tell them to sit in there, done.

That said, I think it's a neat quirk - it should just be possible to push the cats out of the way when necessary.

posted a message on Fix the Minecarts
I'm in favor. With the current setup, rails are only good for connecting permanent structures, and even then it takes a long time to pay off.

One thing I'd add additionally is a faster option on the high end. Now that speed potions and sprinting exist, rails aren't even the fastest transportation method, and they take a lot longer to set up. There's a few ways to implement this:
    * Improved cart. Goes X% faster by any propulsion method.
    * Super booster rail, gives significantly higher boost.
    * Improved furnace cart that stacks with booster rails and lasts longer.

posted a message on Blocks affecting fall damage
Sound cools, especially if breakable blocks (leaves, glass) shattered when you landed on them from high enough, but also slowed you down in the process, reducing your total damage.

Mainly useful for adventure maps, but it could make mountaineering interesting as well.

posted a message on Strip Mining or Branch Mining?
If you really want to guarantee finding every vein, use branch mining with two blocks between branches, and do multiple "floors", with the branch position offset.
However, unless you're limited to mining certain chunks, you'll get better results by staying at layer 8-12 and just spreading out horizontally.

The only purpose to strip mining is if you want to excavate a large area. Even if you want huge quantities of cobblestone, branch mining will generate plenty, and some good stuff to go with it.

Spelunking, however, is another option. IME, Spelunking gives faster results for iron, coal, and lava, as long as you can handle the occasional mob. For gold and diamond, mining works better. Redstone and lapis are a gray area - spelunking might be faster to find a small amount, but for large quantities go mining.

posted a message on What happened to Nether Brick?
While having a recipe would be handy for building projects, there's arguments for the current status. Not having a recipe makes it a rare resource, a somewhat "valuable" thing to build your house out of. If it could be mass produced from Netherrack, it wouldn't be much more impressive than normal stone.

posted a message on Are iron pickaxes worth it? or do you still use stone.
I use a mix of iron and stone until I have a stack or so of iron, then I use iron primarily. Ditto for diamond, I switch to it once I have a good horde.

I always use stone in the Nether though, because Netherrack mines quite fast anyway.

posted a message on Have creepers actually been getting stupider?
While not stumbling into pits is generally a good thing, I think Creepers should be a bit more reckless. Recently, I was in a village, walked out in the morning, and noticed a Creeper up on a roof, which clearly saw me but refused to jump down because the fall was 3-4 blocks. Even when I started jumping up and hitting it, it didn't jump down at me, and I was able to easily kill it.

Since Creepers are going to explode anyway, they should jump down unsafe amounts if:
    1) It will put them in close range of the player.
    2) They have enough health to survive the fall.

Zombies likewise, although in their case I would change it to "They have enough health to survive the fall and still be at 50%+"

Also/alternately, for the smarter mobs (Creepers, Golems, Pigmen, maybe Spiders), if they're being attacked and have no path to the player, they should try to retreat instead. It wouldn't always help, but it's better than standing there and getting smacked to death with a loaf of bread.

posted a message on How do I make a car with no mods?
He means a statue of a car, not one that actually moves.
It's going to be tricky to make a good looking one that's correctly sized though. Most of the statues I've seen are giant for that reason.

posted a message on I hate the first night in minecraftia
The first day is a lot of fun. The first night can be dull if you haven't started a mine yet and don't want it in your house.

But usually, I make a temporary shelter/mine for the first 1-2 days, then go build a permanent house when I have enough resources to do it right and have found a good spot for it. So in that case, the first night just means mining.

posted a message on Upside-down stairs are coming...
Hell yes, best update ever! Well, ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but upside down stairs are awesome, I've been waiting for them for a while. Finally I can have exposed staircases that don't look like crap.

posted a message on Just forget it
Not sure how this would make the game more challenging, or keep the starter gear relevant. :huh.gif:

When I'm just trying for a fast start, I skip caves entirely, dig a shaft straight to L12, and start branch mining. Sure, it might take 1 or 2 more minutes to get iron, but I won't need it before then, because I'll be mining in safety. In fact, when I do that, I don't even bother with leather armor, which I do use when I'm spelunking.

Unless you're on a self-imposed challenge that limits mining, caves are definitely not the easiest option.

posted a message on Sulpher mines in the nether
I like this - the Nether definitely needs some ores to liven up the vast stretches of Netherrack. As for being too powerful - TNT is pretty much a "vanity item" anyway, and the rarity of the ore is still up in the air.

posted a message on What do villagers consider a "house"?
How do they react to an iron door? Do they crowd around it, or just ignore that building? While it might get annoying to have iron doors on barns and such, it would at least be a way to have a private house inside a village.

posted a message on Creepers scared by cats ?
I think this legitimately is a case where you can "just not use them."
Cats aren't a big central element like tools/armor/food, they're something you have to go out of your way to get, that has only that purpose. And even if you do tame one, there's no reason you have to bring it everywhere with you.

Also - that "creeper proof front door?" I've had that since Alpha. I call it ... a fence. :tongue.gif:

They should just scale the drop rates according to difficulty level, and then everyone is happy
I'd support that. Personally, I'm not a fan of drops being really rare - feels too much like MMO grinding. But some people seem to want that, so sure, make them rarer on hard mode.
