posted a message on ██ The Ambient Occlusion controversy ██
Once again for emphasis, there is no "controversy". Don't believe everything you read, especially from a poster with trollface as his avatar. Notch tweeted about this particular modmaker weeks ago for another, now resolved, issue wherein the modder was distributing the complete modified minecraft.jar; this is no longer the case.

No controversy. Notch hasn't, as far as i have noticed, said anything about ambient occlusion at all. I doubt he would conceivably object to it.

It is possible. It's tricky if you want to portal to a specific chunk instead of a general region, but it's possible. If you just want a portal to "the forest where I want to build my castle" it's easy. The main trick is to build your gates on the Nether side whenever possible.

I did that and got blocks with grass on top, but nothing down the sides... Is this 'correct' for the painterly pack at the moment?

You get that if you choose biome-coloured grass, because the grass on the sides doesn't get recoloured. If you choose a single grass colour you'll get side-grass.

Yes it does. I have a very successful tree farm down there, and about 30 surplus saplings. I haven't harvested trees on Earth for a long time.

I think I have an idea, Once a week, I will make a trip back to the surface to restock on certain supplies that I caant find in Hell, otherwise I would run out of tools and ore, and that would not be a good thing! o.o

For extra 'oomph' you could only allow yourself to take back metal ores, redstone, dirt, and sand: the hard-to-replace things you just can't get in the nether. For extra extra, you could require that while on earth you set the difficulty to hard and don't venture out by daylight. Pretend you're so adapted to the gloom that the sun blinds you :wink.gif:

Were I to do this, I'd allow two cheats: Invedit in 1 square of grass and 1 of water (not bucket, but water). You are allowed no more than that.

With the water, you can create a cobblestone factory. You should bring over a lot of iron and dirt, because that is going to be finite, and you'll need buckets. Everything else should be doable... just bring a lot of saplings and the rest will come together. Trees are easy to grow over there. Getting the lightstone to keep them going will be a pain, but possible.

Personally if I were to do this I'd allow myself some trips back on occasion, but never again to the surface. only to the magma-depth caves.

    :Yellow: = Lightstone block
    :GP: = Lightstone dust
    :GoldBar: = Crafted Lightstone cube

Okay, how about if one :Yellow: gave you 3 bits of :GP:, and 9 bits of :GP: could be crafted into one :GoldBar: .

This could be placed, and would give you back one :GoldBar: , which would sttill give you a :GoldBar: when destroyed. Like diamond, gold and steel, when put into the crafting square, it would give you back nine :GP: .

Hope that made sense, in simpler terms, I think:

    1x :Yellow: = 3x :GP:
    9x :GP: = 1x :GoldBar:
    1x :GoldBar: destroyed = 1x :GoldBar:
    1x :GoldBar: crafted = 9x :GP:

I would be more or less down with that, personally. I also think 1x :GoldBar: should be smeltable back into 1x :Yellow: if that's the case though.

No, it's not meant to be spammed like torches.

I don't know that it ever could be. It still requires building a dangerous mining scaffold, usually over lava, in Hell, typically while under attack. Even were it a 1:1 harvest ratio it would require either Peaceful mode (and having harvested on Peaceful, it's still no picnic) or a ton of spare time to get any large amount. Nobody is going to start spamming it like torches, which can be made 4:1 from a very common, easy to get block.

My main point is not that it should be easier to get lightstone to start, but that it should be easier to recover it once it has been, which would make architectural endeavours much more realistic.

From farming around 50 blocks of Lightstone so far, I do think they need to make it easier.. maybe have each Lightstone block drop 2-4 dust, that would solve the problem, like redstone does.

That would help a bit. I still don't like that you can't backtrack from misplacing a lightstone. It's not like it's as easy to get as glass...

Maybe if lightstone dropped 2-4 powder, and you could craft a lightstone block with 4 powder (like clay) instead of 9 (like ores). Or if the crafted lightstone block was a different blocktype from the native one, and could be recovered after smashing it.

Lightstone is awesome. It can be used for all kinds of cool architectural purposes, and it adds a new sparkle to lightsource development. However, it's insanely difficult to get enough to do any real building.

I'd like to see lightstone behave a bit like smoothstone. What I mean is, what is currently lightstone powder should be a different block type that can be placed on its own, with a more carved/crafted look; similar to the difference between smoothstone and cobblestone. 9 of these could be recombined to make a 'natural' unit of lightstone, just as present. 'Carved' lightstone would be slightly less bright, exactly equivalent to a torch I think (if I recall right, lightstone is brighter than torchlight right now).

    Thoughts?

I'm with the guy above who said that a portal world where your portals run a major chance of getting broken is not much of a portal world.

Srsly, it's full of big nasties already and the terrain itself is hostile. Any worse than it already sounds, and there will be absolutely no reason to use it for travel. Better to just take the long road, because hell would be certain death. Then most of notch's programming is a waste of time.

When you step inside, an identical portal will be created at the equivalent spot in the hell dimension,

So, i guess from this quote directly from the article, that the hell relm will be generated based on your already generated real world. so two peoples hells will never be the same. also, it seems that you cant use hell as a way of exploring. you have to have placed two portals, one where you want to go from and one where you want to end up, and walk between hell to the other. i can see me covering the path between it with cobblestone and just using it as transportation, and then have another portal that i can go into just to explore hell.

Nothing says you can't construct a portal on the Hell side, opening into the real world. All the material is there.

posted a message on Is Hell only for Invedit/hard-core miners? Newbs not welcome
    Quote from scrubking »
Notch is making a huge mistake listening to the "hardcore" idiots who want nothing but extreme difficulty. Already it's clear that this hell stuff is completely unbalanced and way too hard. Permanent, dependable Light is a necessity not a luxury. Requiring us to go into an extremely difficult environment just to get basic things we need to survive is beyond stupid and reeks of poor planning and thought. It's like requiring RPG gamers to fight dragons at level 1 just to get healing potions. And that's not including all of tough to find items/tools you need just to get to hell in the first place - another stupid decision. (NO diamonds are not easy to find!)

The new ghast enemy also looks to be a creation of a griefer and not an intelligent, level headed developer. How can you combine a flying monster that shoots fire with an environment that catches on fire? You can't out-run them and they can shoot fire anywhere. Essentially one or two ghasts can surround you with fire putting you in a no win situation in seconds. What is the purpose of that? To get a laugh? To laugh at people die? That is not fun. That is not how you develop games to grief and laugh at people who die at impossible situations you threw at them.

Notch seriously needs to stop listening to the idiots who keep clamoring for incredibly stupid things like the removal of "peaceful" mode because "lol the game is too easy lol" and hire someone who actually knows something about game difficulty and balance and listen to them and ONLY them.

    Dude.

I dislike many of the same things you do. I want to be able to light my base reliably pretty quickly. I don't want to fight extremely hard battles all the time. I just want to build my base and occasionally defend it.

However, you're getting your nethers in a bind over something you've only heard rumours and hints about. Play the expansion before you get so worked up.

That's ... kinda ridiculous. Sorry. Mossy rocks to make a "magic" sword for fighting off a high level creature... really?

I suspect the sword to fight off ghasts is going to be the same as all your other swords. Because it's not really a matter of how much damage you do, so much as the fact that you can't get close because of the fire and explosions, no matter how effective your chopper is.
