I checked it out in game; mind boggling Then Minecraft ran out of memory. So I watched the video in your link, does more justice than my craptop ever could.
So this took me about a week to make. It was created entirely by hand except for the 'moderator only' blocks like water and lava. Let's just say I was dreaming about blocks by the end of it >.<
If you want to check it out for yourself, head on over to Reddit's Creative Server: C.Nerd.Nu and type /warp erarium.
Bug with the preview 98% version: when I enable connected textures, it screws with sandstone (and maybe other blocks). The fancy new sandstone with the smooth tile like sides or the creeper face goes back to the original sandstone sides.
I built the string of islands on WoM: SMP's server a week ago. Was shut down 'for a week' to change servers about 8 days ago. I really wanted to keep going. No Dice. So yesterday i went on over to WoM: Poland and made the ring island. Really glad SMP will be bringing back the same map, can't wait to hit the string of islands again.
edit: redid the animation, this time i drained it off at the end. how dramatic. linked the image as it's now 1 meg.
edit2: a terrestrial screenshot. i took a bunch but effed up, this is the only one that came out:

I've always wanted to learn editors like UnrealEd and Hammer, and go on to create amazing things, but I am simply NOT an artist.
Minecraft is totally up my alley. I'm pretty proud of some of my creations and as sad as this may sound, they are far more impressive than anything i've conjured in any game editors...
Plus, there's nothin like buildin castles in multiplayer with random friendly miners. I mean really, what comes close?
I can't really see why it would be more difficult for you to play later on as opposed to now. If your connection is doing the trick, it probably doesn't matter how many new features get implemented; your connection will remain the same.
Things like survival mode (mass npcs) and additional tiles with more properties will increase the bandwidth load. It's entirely possible for things to get a bit more laggy but as far as the free build mode goes i bet it will remain perfectly playable on dial up.
