Mining in a straight line is not efficient, nor effective.

If you look at the code that generates the ores, you'll realize that this is what it does:

    1. For layers 0 to 128, generate 20 dirt veins.
    2. For layers 0 to 128, generate 10 gravel veins.
    3. For layers 0 to 128, generate 20 coal veins.
    4. For layers 0 to 64, generate 20 iron veins.
    5. For layers 0 to 32, generate 2 gold veins.
    6. For layers 0 to 16, generate 8 redstone veins.
    7. For layers 0 to 16, generate 1 diamond vein.
    8. For layers 16 to 16, generate 1 lapis lazuli vein.

The act of generating a vein consists of randomly picking a point in the current chunk according to the provided layer limits, then using that random point, "grow" a vein.

So by mining in a straight line, you are cutting one thin line through multiple chunks. Remember each chunk gets only 1 diamond generation. If you happen to miss it, you've wasted your efforts cutting through that chunk.

Branch mining, on the other hand, processes each chunk thoroughly depending on branch interval. At two-block intervals, you are 100% thorough on the two layers you are mining.

In other words, to get the most diamonds out of the least number of chunks, you need to branch mine, covering layers 0 to 16. This way you will retrieve every single diamond ore generated into each chunk.

As for the "Arc Mining" theory, I think it's just pure coincidence. Remember that you are getting 1 diamond vein every chunk, forced to be generated in a certain height range. So if you do not limit yourself to the same layers (which is what branch mining does), but instead allow yourself to drift up and down, you are bound to find more diamond veins. And since the Minecraft world has really low resolution, it means veins will line up in an arc simply because it's so easy to draw an arc that covers a lot of veins.

Instead of starting at the usual layer 10 or 12 for branch mining, try the same branch mining at layer 5, but instead of mining just two block high tunnels, mine five block high. You will encounter much more diamonds this way. Or, just do 2 block high branches at layers 1-2, 5-6, 9-10, 13-14, 17-18. You will cover all possible diamond generation co-ordinates for your chunks, hence finding you the most number of diamonds (and Lapis Lazuli and Redstone).

You are taking more effort to clear out a chunk, though, so mining in a straight line compared to strip mine a chunk gives you the same chance of finding a diamond vein overall.

posted a message on How to make timelapses
Use Camera Studio set at the estimated amount of time the build will take, and make sure you point at the position you want to build. Afterwards, just speed up the video with a video editor, and there you go. A timelapse.

Cant you just change this in the server.cfg ?
    max-build-height=256

Nope, the anvil format doesn't support heights higher than that. It's just the way it works :/
It's like you try to fill a glass with more water than it can hold. It just doesn't work.

To apply for the staff, you'll need to be a regular contributor (helping regularly with the thread). You need to be devoted and be asked at any time for help.

What do these staff positions do?
Field TesterSimilar to a Tips & Techniques Developper, they test around the guide's tips, techniques, and revelations of secrets by testing them in the real maps. Afterwards, they suggest some improvements on them, and they can also submit their own techniques, tips, and findings.[/anchor] (2/3 slots)
Tips & Techniques DevelopperSimilar to a Field Tester, they try different options in the maps with their own techniques they developped and can then submit their own techniques, tips, and findings.[/anchor] (1/3 slots)
Graphical SupportThey create graphics for the SHG, but these must be assigned by the creator of the SHG. They can also submit their creations if they want, but they may or may not be implemented.[/anchor] (0/1 slots)

Note: These are not limitations to how you contribute to the guide, but a way to regularly give support and gain full credit. Each staff member has an icon posted on the item which identifies the staff member.

posted a message on Glowstone is a pain!
I wonder, glowstone seems to "leak" from the ceiling of the nether, a bit like sap from trees.
I agree that glowstone should be a renewable resource, because of of its usefulness and rarity.
Perhaps that glowstone clumps can slowly regenerate downwards the more you spend time in the nether?

Do you know that this is like spam? MCF should have a rule not to spam with "Herobrine" hoax. HE IS NOT REAL, AND WILL NEVER BE.

Actually, there is a rule like this.

Hey there everyone! I'm currently not working on this collection, because of other projects I'm more interested in. Some examples are the Secrets of the Jungle adventure map, which is almost completed, and the Super Hostile guide, which is still a WIP.

This project is not discontinued, though, it's more of a side-project I'll be working on when I'm feeling like it. For something that I put much more work into, look at my other, more recent projects. Thanks for reading!

Hey everyone! Here's another quick update, as of June 25, 2012!

The two upcoming series on youtube will get released within a week, as I said before. I'm almost done re-building my computer, then I can start working on the first episode (of both series). Meanwhile, I've been making a revision of the walkthrough of Sea of Flame II, which needed a few strategy and grammar fixes. Well, then I encountered thread formatting issues, so there's some missing content in some entries. That'll be fixed shortly.

Anyways, I hope you continue to have fun in Minecraft!
