In my noob days, before I knew the dangers of fire, I made what is what I came to believe, my biggest blunder, YET.
What I did was I made a mansion out of only wood. Now remember, this was in my noobish days. So I thought the outside was a little to bland compared to this giant beautiful mansion. Well, I decided to make a lava tower, which was mistake #1. The second mistake was to clear the area of trees. You'll see why soon. I decided to move the tower put accidentally broke the lava tower..... all of the lava went outside of the tower and caught a tree on fire. At that time, I didn't know how to source block, so what I did was try and block it with a pool: SUCESS. I also didn't know how to creep :sleep.gif:. So now what I fell in and died with all my materials. The lava then spread to my treehouse (danm you creeper!!) And then I died again, rushing into the lava and drowned due to the current. In the end, my whole mansion was burnt down, also all of the trees that I could've used to re-build.
So the lesson of this today, kids. Is NEVER f*** up with lava.
I actually did the same thing except it was a giant ugly tower, so when it burned down, I just rebuilt it with cobble. :tongue.gif: But then being a stupid little boy, on my new map I made an underground lava storage, RIGHT underneath my wooden house, and then some stupid glitch caught the grass by it on fire and my house burned down, AGAIN. After that I built every wooden structure with half wooden blocks (they are inflammable). :laugh.gif:
On my second day in Minecraft, I found a HUGE cave and of course I explored it, I think i had around 30 iron ore tons of redstone and lapiz, and most importantly my first load of diamonds (around 5). I also found my first lava lake, i proceeded to make a safe bridge over it and marked it all over with signs, so I'll be careful. Ironically when I was building the bridge I accidentally let go of my shift key and I fell in, being a noob I forgot to store my valuables first, so I lost everything. :sad.gif: Even now I only have around 3 diamonds on that map and only 2 on another, so it was probably my worst Minecraft experience ever. After that I always carry around 4 empty buckets and 2 buckets of water, and cobble or dirt. The 4 empty buckets are mainly used for harvesting lava for my giant above ground lava storage. :tongue.gif:
I agree, maybe you should make one per map and he will never despawn, encouraging you to find him and kill him, or he will eventually dig his way to you and kill you.
I've also had that problem, try removing the snow and making the room larger, for some reason Minecraft doesn't like flat lands and snow combination, so whenever you have even one block of water squids will start spawning like crazy.
I've got a pretty useful one, the Draw Bridge/Mob Trap
The planks are the trapdoors and the mushroom can be a button or lever.
Put redstone on the cobble stones and suspend the whole thing from a cliff, lava or water. You can build another level of cobblestone one air block above the one with the redstone, to keep people/mobs from simply walking over. Pressure plates also works, and you can modify it to have two sides you just have to attach the redstone on the other side to the lever. Of course you can add walls and other stuff if you want to.

MCwiki says only coal works, but I've personally never used a powered mine cart, I just walk. :tongue.gif:
