posted a message on When you need to know something...

Discord servers are kinda on the same level as wikis for me, as not all mods have a wiki at all or only have one for an outdated version, or only have one that's incomplete/vague and doesn't have the info I'm looking for. People like to show off their stuff, they like to talk about it, and they like asking/answering questions.

For bug-stuff, most mods have a Git repository and bugtracker so I'll go there first. Sometimes, particularly in the case of when mods are first arriving to a new minecraft version, the curseforge comments section can be helpful in determining if a bug is really a bug (and if it's been fixed or not) or I'm just unlucky/doing stuff wrongly.

Some things are either simple to test yourself or are so way off in the weeds that nobody's ever thought to check it out. For example, waterlogged blocks can become infinite springs but the water you pull from a waterlogged-block infinite spring cannot be put back into the infinite spring the way you can with an old-fashioned water-source infinite spring.

posted a message on Hacked client and stuff

You will not get banned for using a hacked client. Keep in mind that playing on a server with your account is not the same as your account. You will definitely get banned for using a hacked client on a server (unless the server specifically confirms it's okay), but you will still be able to play on a different server or single-player.

posted a message on Witch farm not working

How as you killing the witches? Magma blocks will not kill the witches at all, they'll just constantly drink potions to outpace the damage tick and because they are constantly drinking potions the game will never despawn them ("busy" mobs are exempt from despawning). The same may also be true for piston-crushers, though in that case perhaps enough damage is done to slowly kill them.

If a witch is drinking a potion, they will drop that potion instead of the random drop.

posted a message on I flooded my house, how can i fix it?

I'm betting he has waterlogged blocks that are forming the exterior that have a face or two that is fully exposed to the house interior, thereby causing water to flow inside.

If this is the case, the primary fix is to thicken the walls so that you have an outside layer that is waterlogged and an inside layer that is dry. Waterlogged blocks act just like water source blocks, with the sole exception being that where they form infinite springs you cannot empty a water bucket into them. Thus, if the water has a space to flow into then it will flow into it.

Nope. Mojang believes that furniture stifles creativity. If you want actual furniture, use mods.

posted a message on Need install advice for grandkids

There are two main platforms for Minecraft--the Java edition and the Bedrock edition. Neither is compatible with the other one, but efforts are underway to bring them both "together" in a way that one can update when the other does. Neither one is really able to separate single-player from multiplayer, but I suppose there are ways around this that can lock them out of joining others/others joining them.

Java edition is limited to "desktop OSes"--Linux flavors, MacOS, Windows--due to requiring the Java Virtual Machine to run. It does NOT crossplay with mobile devices at all, and it doesn't really use a "friends" system like Bedrock does. Instead, you join servers on the internet that host a common world for everyone to play on together (who gets to join is left up to the server owners to manage). There's also a LAN mode that can be utilized instead to allow multiple players onto the same world within a localized area (ie, Grampa's house). Java edition by far has the deeper modded-content ecosystem, so if the girls grow tired of vanilla gameplay (particularly if Minecraft becomes an even bigger thing for them later on) they can have lots more to do.

Bedrock edition can be installed on both desktops as well as mobile devices (tablets, phones, game consoles, etc), but as far as desktops/laptops go they're limited to just Windows 10. Bedrock has crossplay support, and players can join each others' worlds via a friends system. While the gameplay is similar to Java, there are still some significant differences in how things work that could frustrate/confuse the girls. This might not be a big deal, though, as they are already playing this edition on Dad's phone.

I believe it's placed too high by 1 block. It can be on the floor or one block inset

posted a message on Question before buying Minecraft about cross platform multiplayer.

For your PC, you need to install the Minecraft Bedrock edition. This version of Minecraft needs the Windows 10 OS on your computer, so if you have an older PC with Windows 8 or older or you have a non-Windows OS entirely you won't be able to cross-play at all.

For the iPod, I'm not sure if Pocket edition is compatible with Bedrock, as Pocket edition was the precursor before Bedrock arrived. It may just be too old to match up with the Bedrock version on your PC, and in that case you will need a second account for the Bedrock edition.

posted a message on Can't install Optifine (saying "Optifine is not a valid mod file")

The drag and drop installation only works with .jar files. It doesn't work with .zip files.

posted a message on Should I continue playing Minecraft?

Minecraft is free to play. It's not costing you anything to abandon the game, so just write down the important details (username, password, registered email address, and transaction ID if you still have it). That way, should you ever have the urge to jump into minecraft again you can just jump right in and explore the new stuff that has gotten you excited recently.

posted a message on I Need Advice/Instructions on how to Build an Effective Enderman Farm in The End, Using a Wither as well

Why in the world would you need to involve a wither? As far as I know, endermen don't care about the wither so you're just needlessly destroying blocks by having him there.

posted a message on Is a cactus XP farm worth building in survival multiplayer?

Cactus farms in a vanilla game are only worth it if you plan to use cactus or green/lime/cyan-colored blocks as a primary component in your builds. Without an economy-plugin reason to generate it, cactus is just far too slow to be worth doing.

posted a message on Account Migration

Everyone that has an account that has to be migrated will get a cape. Beyond that, dunno about any other capes in the works.

Migration is apparently already happening, but they are doing it batches. There will be a notification in the launcher that you have been migrated, Mojang is not going to send out emails or texts or posting on your social-media wall to tell you that it's happened so if you get any notification through these means it's probably a scam.

posted a message on Minecraft wither skeleton farm REALLY slow spawn rates.

1)How many players are on the server AND in the nether when you see this farm working slowly? If the answer is more than just yourself, proceed to question #2.

2)how many of these other players are at the farm with you? If the answer is zero (meaning it's just you at the farm and these other players are somewhere else in the Nether), then the farm is working perfectly fine and most of the spawns are just happening around the other players instead. Minecraft does not balance the spawns between all players to ensure each player gets a fair amount and since you made the effort to only allow mobs to spawn in a very tiny spot around you naturally they will spawn more frequently around other players that are out exploring or who haven't bothered spawnproofing anything.
