I don't really think this would have too much of an effect on performance anyway. The fragments are not even rendered in 3d as far as I can tell.

I agree. There should probably be a limited number of these fragments showing up at any time too close to one another -- you might need to be standing very close to them too?

When someone digs into a block, little bitty fragments of material fly out and disappear really quickly. I'd like those fragments (at least a few of them) to hang around for a while such that you can tell when someone has been digging somewhere recently if you take the time to look around.

    That is all.

[ oh and maybe some means of tracking where someone has walked... but this would be good enough I think ]

dra6o0n, the only name I can come up with for a player whose only goal is to kill every other player on the server is "griefer".

Also, yay! Number 3 is my idea [I don't know if you came up with it on you own separately] and it is here!

The Winner, you are a winner in my eyes.

Saying we need smaller inventories because we have minecarts and it would give them more use, is like saying we should only be able to walk one block every few seconds because we have mounts.

No it's not. You have exaggerated far too much.

    At the simplest level possible:
Nobody feels like you walk too fast.
Many people feel the inventory is too large; it is too easy to simply carry around everything under the sun, meaning that you will pretty much be able to carry around a tool for every situation, ever. Players won't actually have to think about what to bring on a given expedition, and there will be no interesting choices to make in that regard.

    Quote from redrager »
It is way too expensive to make a minecart track though a whole mine anyway, and have it be anywhere near efficient.

I've got to agree with you there. Roller coasters are fun, though! The problem with tracks is that they take too long to remove, they're too expensive, and the reward is limited due to the limited size of any given vein.

They're capable of hunting animals for food, sheep for cloth to craft armor, chopping trees for building or crafting materials, digging dirt up to flatten land to build homes, mining stone and iron for better weapons, armor and building/crafting materials, anything you can do. They're able to build homes (but to be fair, they're limited to only making small 9x9x3 houses and have chests to protect their goods.

    [..]

By the way, don't say its not possible, I've played all sorts of games that have an NPC intelligence similar to this.

Please give me an example of any game with AI even close to capable of doing all of these things autonomously in a world like Minecraft's three-dimensional and fully mutable world and then maybe I won't say it's not possible.

"Somewhat" hard is a huge understatement and I look forward to any attempts at AI like this.

Personly i think that anybody that agrees with this is saying that they want a handicap/

Does that mean you'd like to have an infinite inventory, three times as many hearts, destroy any blocks instantly with your bare hands, and be able to kill any enemy with one punch?

    > no

But why do you want the handicap?

    ----------------------------------------

Hey! Purple! It's my opinion that if you're going to travel that far, you should be setting up a temporary base or camp.

If 6 is MAXIMUM pickaxes, you can't include it in the calculation for MINIMUM items.

I agree that tracks and stuff are a pain to build. Expensive, too.

Finally, I don't think one person should be able to run for a day across the map to a mine in the middle of nowhere, delve, come up with stacks and stacks of stone and iron and gold etc. and just run all the way back home.

It'd be far more interesting to see people building up temporary camps/mines or even little settlements on top of lucrative veins, picking away at materials for a while.

As it is now, the inventory is fine for Single Player because you're all alone, but as we move into multiplayer territory, people are going to find that whatever excess they might have had is now multiplied tenfold (excepting the case of a war).

Can't you think about the future? The future of minecraft, and not just what works perfectly for you at the moment? ):

Spehss: If you're going to be able to deal damage to people by jumping on their head it should happen whether or not you have heavy armour :)

I added a little tiny section to the first post regarding delayed jumps instead of no jumps.

I'm not sure how one would go about doing this, but it would be interesting if you could craft an item to obscure your identity in survival. Your name would not appear above your head -- or maybe you might be given a name of random characters every time you put it on so that you can still be distinguished from in (local?) chat.

    What do you think?

[also it would hide any custom skin you might have]

    THIS KIND OF CLOAK.

    The ideas here are great.

    However:

    -1.5 walking speed.
Given. Just seems like the right speed. When using 2x speed with the WoM hack, it just seems inhumanly fast.

-Easy 5 block jump, possible 6 block jump.
Compared to the normal easy 2 bloc jump, possible 3 block jump. Seems really far, especially compared to normal jump, but when running you jump WAY farther than walking.

When you sprint, you go wayyyy faster than you go when walking.
Like 4x to even 6x as fast.
That's the main reason you jump further.

    Still, great thread!

If that's not about realism then I don't know what it is.

if you think anything in my post had to do with realism, then maybe you should listen to the OP, and stop arguing that anything realistic is bad.

I am the OP so I'm not sure what you're talking about :s

also.. i don't like when people say they are "admitting" things in a discussion. makes you sound like some pompous douchebag who thinks they are allowing your points to get across. just sayin'. the difference there is that in light combat the other guy can pillar too.

It's one word! I'm sorry if I offended you by 'admitting' something instead of 'agreeing to' it or something.
All I meant was it was not something that I had thought of and I agree that it is a problem.

    No. Slow = boring.

Increased fall damage doesn't make much sense to me... seems to me if you're wearing heavy armor and fall, you'd be partially protected from it as much as you would be hampered by it. I do think swimming would be impossible, and maybe climbing ladders would be too?

Heavy armour would protect you to a point, but solid metal doesn't offer quite as much protection from blunt trauma as it does from other things.
Swimming should definitely be impossible, and perhaps ladders should be impossible too -- but it could work out alright to make ladders a valid alternative to half-step stairs.

    Quote from Swingerzetta »
I think a delay would still lead to a heavy armor player being defensive, because, as mentioned, it'd be such an inconvenience that they wouldn't really have the patience to go very far.

The issue I have here is that of patience. I don't think heavy armour should put a strain on your patience, because if that's all you wanted then you could simply reduce speed [although delayed jumping still opens up cooler tactics].

The delay after jumping is something I would seriously like to consider, and it would be very cool to test both that and no-jumping. (Perhaps after landing you get stuck in place for a short period instead of simply being unable to jump during that time)

its intrinsically necassary that someone in heavy armor is not made completely 100% ****ing useless because someone pillared 2 or 3 blocks into the air, or jumped up a small ledge and can now in no way be followed.

i would laugh if you told me that someone in heavy armor is able to walk normally but somehow cant jump at all. laugh in your face. a 1-2 second delay after a jump means a heavy wont be chasing anyone up or down any hills and wont be doing any mining expeditions, i assure you. it accomplishes the goal without making heavy armor useless in the eyes of players, which it no doubt would be if heavys couldnt jump at all.

    Excuse me sir, but
    Quote from Droqen »
Please don't bring up realism. Like, at all. Zero mention of it. I don't care

I will admit that placing blocks may be an issue, as it can be done with no delay in the middle of combat, and you can carry so many blocks around you it's not even funny. However, this is an issue with Light combat as well [spamming blocks to save yourself and escape, that is -- it's much faster than digging ever could be].

A jump delay could work out alright, but if that were to be made the case then heavy armour would have to be rather less protective than I was imagining.

What are peoples' thoughts on drastically increased fall damage? You would start to take fall damage at a drop of just 2 or 3 blocks, and it might build up faster, too. I'm not sure how I feel about this.
