I was originally trying it on another computer on my network, but then I tried it on my same computer... it didn't work when connecting with localhost even. What would cause it not to connect if client/server are on the same computer? I already upgraded java, downgraded java, redownloaded files, deleted files, etc etc...
So I've been trying to connect to another sever on my local network, I set up a x58 system just to run an apache/sql/minecraft server; and I wasn't able to connect to it.
After a few days of trying to get it to work and trying various things, I said screw it and put the server computer into the DMZ, and disabled all antivirus, malware detection, and firewalls - and tried to connect again. It didn't work still.
So, I then proceeded to delete all files in appdata and all files for the client and server on my main computer; and then try to connect to a server on my own computer. It didn't connect.
New 1.8 server and client, no previous data or logs, stock client/server, no mods... and it won't connect even when both are ran on the same computer.
Has anyone else had this issue? How would I proceed to get it to work?
Just setup a minecraft server on a spare x58 workstation board I had lying around, ports are allowed in Windows Firewall on the host machine, port forwarding is setup on my router, but I still can't connect even using my local IP and the port number I've selected. Keep getting this:
java.net.connectexception connection timed out no further information
If you have everything set up correctly and done all suggestions from this thread, where are you left at? I'm a fairly technical person, and I still can't seem to figure this out.
No way to directly connect them really, the server is used by the entire household for storage, backup, and media playing; so I can't really disconnect it without getting confirmation from like 6-7 people they aren't using it.

This happens even when I'm connecting to localhost, same computer for client and server.
