Oh stop that. It's probably slow servers, OR Mojang is testing some kind of login protection which might be the cause of that. If you have password saving turned on in your browser, shut it off for MC.net.
EDIT: I can get in just fine, keep trying. If it lets up after a few attempts, the servers are to blame.
I just logged in to Minecraft.net and it was fine. Sometimes the servers get a bit overloaded and you can't login, however, saying it's hackers is going a way too far. The servers are simply slow because a bunch of people are logging in.
I'd love to get killed in my sleep by mobs. Ever more danger to conquer.
...Except by creepers, maybe since they're giant dicks they don't explode at that point. They just try to mate with you until you die of blunt trauma...
I think that out of any DRM scheme (and I hesitate to call it a DRM alongside others), Steam is really a decent setup. Not only does it actually provide a decent incentive to actually buy games rather than uselessly try to stop copying of its games as, for instance, SecuROM does, but it's got really nice community features. I use it all the time and hardly have problems. Although I prefer hard copies of games, I have no objection buying over Steam if that's the only way.
However, I would prefer Minecraft to operate independently server-wise, and I think that'll be the case. For instance, some games are SOLD on Steam but don't use Steam servers for login-- If Notch does something with Steam I think that's the way he'll go, there's no practicality in using the Steam servers when he just recently set up the new webserver for MC.

Well, sorry to dissapoint but Notch stated that he will definitely not be integrating Minecraft with Steam in the interview with Machinima and Seananners on Friday, last week. He did say he was definitely going to be adding a friends list though.
This makes me happy. I'd prefer MC to have its own, unique social gaming layout. I don't dislike steam, but I'd love to see what Notch does with his own designs.

Currently I'm using this, with painterly dirt.

And the green one with this:
Good times. Now all I need is a crowbar instead of an iron sword.
