I think their current mechanics are fine. They're great in pelagic environments, which are often my favorite areas too. The only problem is the bug that lets the server and client disagree about where the boat is, leading to odd behavior and crashing when you shouldn't.
It has been improved since it appeared, but it's still a problem as of 1.8.x
Oh, and lilypad hit detection. Sometimes you go through, sometimes you explode. Is this intentional? I don't like it.

Another time was just after the mob AI update. I needed ender pearls, so I built a small obsidian tower out in a plain. Filled the bottom with water, roofed it in a way that endermen couldn't teleport to me, and waited for nightfall to spot some endermen. This "enderman observatory" was a longtime and well-tested pearl-finding strategy I used and enjoyed. Within three minutes, I was completely beseiged by a constant stream of zombies coming in from great distances in all directions. That change in detection radius turned out to be a real game-changer. I ended up making a break for it and just barely survived my daring escape.

Skills: Large geometric curvy stone/glass things, sometimes redstone. Recovering FTB addict here
Maturity: Very good. Not easily angered, does not grief.
Interest in events: Not too big on bosses or PVP, but if there's a themed city like a cloud town or something, I'll be all over that.

Not my best work, that got lost with my last server

Wait. 3D biomes? UNDERDARK BIOME. This would do amazing things for a long-lost suggestion I once made. And, of course, tons of other ideas. I really, really, really want to see this become incorporated into vanilla. I would re-buy Minecraft if I had to, to play on a server with cubic chunks.

If I get a really epic bow, I often call it Doom Bow, in reference to the treasured item in Realm of the Mad God.
I rarely give my armor interesting names.
I like to name my silk touch picks Rubber Finger.

Enderman hunting has really changed too. I found out the hard way when I made an enderman observatory (small tower with water on the inside ground floor and no viable teleport spots on the top) and found my little tower too swarmed to fight my intended target. I've also had similar but more deadly interference while fighting endermen in the open. Interesting challenge, fun stuff.

And Mojang has said that if they wanted to make that level of detail possible, they would have made the blocks smaller. So I don't think this is going to happen.
