Really neat! The right click effects are a very nice touch, however I feel the crafting is a little strange, there are quite a few "filler" items that must be crafted to get to the end product. Maybe make those more useful?

Interesting mod, I like the sprites a lot. I think you should add a use for the refined redstone/diamond, that way they are more than just a "filler" item when it comes to crafting.

What sounds interesting about StoneHeart for you?: I like the hybrid factor to it, as well as the ability to live in a city or the wild. It's also not flooded with plugins, so things seem simple for the player.

How long have you played Minecraft?: I can't give you an exact number, a very long time. It was a little while before the Halloween update back in alpha that I started. I'll go with 1-2 years.

Have you ever played on a economic based server before?: Yes, but not long before the immaturity got to me.
What made you want to apply?: This server seems to be about enjoying the game for the game and not immature nonsense.
After reading this post what would you say we should change about it?: Nothing, it's straight forward and appealing.
Have you ever been banned from another server?: Nope :)

I just made this skin, but the transparent parts are not transparent, but rather black. I've seen skins around that have these parts transparent, how did they do it?

(I also used MCSkin3D and photoshop to get the parts transparent)

posted a message on Ubuntu Noob: Battery Life Help Needed!
I need some help, I've turned to internet guides everywhere, but as the title suggests i'm an ubuntu noob and am lost.

So here's my issue: I'm running ubuntu along side windows in a second partition. Everythign is working great. However my battery life is terrifying! In windows 7 I get about 3-4 hours, but in ubuntu I get 1 hour (after installing the list below). Before that it was 45 minutes!

I thought ubuntu was lightweight, so something is clearly wrong.

Here's what i've done so far:
-I installed something called Laptop-mode-tools. Apparently I leave this alone and it works it's magic?
-I then installed powertop, toggled everythign under "tuneables" to good.
-I tried jupiter, but that didn't seem to do anything so I removed it.
-I heard that installing the nividia (i have a nvidia card) proprietary drivers would help power management, but nothigns seems to have changed, so I left it alone.

That's all I know of. Powertop and running "powerstat" in terminal both indicate that my computer is running about 27-35 watts with nothing open after a cold boot.

27 watts seems rediculous since my computer reports 15 on the windows side. What can I do?

    Still, save your money.
Save up for a better laptop or something else nice for yourself.

Could you explain why I shouldn't get the ssd for this laptop? I just got this laptop about 2 months ago, I like it a lot, and I don't think I need to buy a new one soon. I'm curious, however, as to why you think the SSD would be a bad idea.

I wouldn't recommend using an SSD and only an SSD.
Save your money for a desktop if you can; it will be much better.

That's just it, I can't be using a desktop, I have to have my laptop with as I need to be able to use a computer anywhere.

Depends if you have a spare 3.5" or if your case has, a 2.5" HDD bay. If not, then you have have to just find some way to get your SSD installed, they are not heavy or so.

As for your other HDD, leave it be honsestly. There isnt a reason to remove it unless it is dying.

Well my computer is a laptop, with only one HDD bay, so wouldn;t one have to leave? (You can tell I've never upgraded a hard drive before :P)

Just to give some other options to consider, you could replace the optical drive with an SSD instead, which would also maintain portability. The downside however is that you need to pay an extra ~$50 or an external optical drive and adapter to mount the drive.

Though I would recommend having an internal SSD, since mainly as you are going to have the OS there. In that way you won't actually need the HDD for it to function, which gives a lot more flexibility of portability when you need it. As for the installation process, I believe you can get programs for transferring files, IIRC both Intel and Crucial also offer such software.

Thanks for the reply! It's my fault for this but I was very unclear, I don't want the ssd to be portable (although you do have a point here). I simply am worried about whether a SSD will be more prone to breaking than an HDD and if windows/my computer would not play nice with it. At this point, after reading other responses, I'm positive on an internal SSD, but am worried about space and whether or not this whole "It loses write ability over time thing" is an issue.

Thanks for the tip on the transfer of data too! Didn't notice the software while looking around!

    In that case, internal SSD.

If you do not have a 2.5" HDD bay, Velcro or Jerry Rig it in there. I have a 2.5" HDD that i have velcroed in my case, rock solid hehe. My friend tapped his 3 SSDs in his case for he was out of HDD bays.

But simple said, put it internal for best performance and reliability and safty of the device.

Would you mind clarifying on what you mean by velcro/taping it? Do I not need to remove the current HDD in here? (Seems like a silly question, but I'm open minded).

I would say certainly get an internal SSD if you are looking for to run the OS and applications from it. External SSDs would also work, but I would say generally if it is a boot drive you do not want it plugged in via USB.

If you do get an SSD the best option would be to re-install all of your applications due to the registry entries that Windows makes. I've tried copying programs when I was a bit more naive and it didn't work out too well.

I have and it has been great it boots up Windows in a matter of seconds and loads most applications within the blink of an eye. I can't comment on reliability of the drive personally, but from what I have heard the M4 is a very reliable drive (I don't know the exact figures). Crucial always offer very good support for their drives too, they always release firmware very quickly to correct any bugs. But by all means, if you have the money, get the Intel drive. It is quicker and generally more reliable.

You know the only reason I would have the ssd as a boot drive at this point is for the same reason a few others have pointed out here: External ssd's are more costly and you probably don't want it to take a beating.

I don't need it to ever leave the computer, so it only makes sense to make it internal, it's just a matter of space vs. price. Also thanks for pointing out the reinstall thing, I was very curious about that! Time to go hunt down those torrents again... I mean serials! Definitely paid for them. Yup.

    Quote from CodofMC

I would get an internal Crucial M4 128GB SSD. It's what I'm using and it's pretty speedy. If you can wait, you might be able to catch a deal for one on Amazon. I was lucky and got one for $110, pretty good for current SSD prices.

I have gotten all my memory upgardes from crucial, but the only thing i'm worrying about is how people seem to be saying those drives break after 8 months, however many seem to love them. I'll look into them, especially if I can get one that cheap!

    Quote from Archis

Internal as the SATA III 6Gbps is a LOT faster than USB 3 or eSATA. Oh, and you don't want to record to a SSD, it can reduce the write speed until the drive is read only.

Thanks for the info! Definitely won't record to the SSD 0.o No need to have it be an ebook now!

posted a message on Internal vs. External SSD?
I've been reading around on the forums and the internet in general, and I've come to really want a ssd. It seems that they are more reliable than a hard disk drive and far faster, however I am reluctant because I hear a lot of people are having troubles. So I have a few questions that I would appreciate if someone could take the time to answer them!

So before I ask anything, I just wanted to point out some system specs, in case that makes a difference.

    Toshiba Qosimo x775-Q7170 (laptop)
    Core i5-2450M @2.50 GHz
640Gb HDD @7200rpm, Serial ATA (note: real capacity seems to be 579GB according to windows)
64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium

Not sure what the motherboard is, I think it is either one of these two things from the device manager:

Intel® Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel® 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller - 1C22
It's probably niether of those, so if you need to know my motherboard please tell me where to find it and I'll get it :P

BIG EDIT: I've got a lot of answers, so I've hidden the original post in this spoiler:

So the questions (I went back and bolded them, I have a lot of background info):

    1. I'm looking into an ssd for speed, not storage. As you can see from the spoiler, I have 640Gb of storage, and even then I can't use it up! I just ran a clean up, have only the programs/ games I use and nothing else. That fills 63GB. So the question that boggles me is whether or not to get an internal or external ssd.

I do record minecraft and other things, but that all goes on to another external 375GB HDD I have only for videos. I also do small little 3D projects in cinema 4d and that's about it. I don't get that many games too often, so I don't think I'll ever need this much space.

So why not just get one? Well I'm wary because many people are reporting crashes, BSOD's, or other issues. I also hear that they wear out quickly over time or that recording to them can cause serious issues (Side note: Should I even record to an ssd or continue using the external hd I have now?) On top of that they're not cheap (and I don't want to buy junk here). I think 120GB SSD will do fine for me, but I want another opinion (this is where you come in!).

If I got an interal SSD this is what I'm thinking I'll do:
    • continue using the 375GB external for recording/storing/editing video. (note the software to edit would be on the main drive.)
    • Take my current 579 GB HDD and use that for backups or storing things I won't need to perform/on my person all the time. (remember this is a laptop)
    • Put all programs/windows/games onto the ssd itself
If I got an external SSD:
    • Simply put the programs I want to run faster on there
    • EDIT: Sorry for being unclear, external ssd would NOT have the boot OS. (not safe!) Also, the SSD does not need to be portable, it only goes with this computer.
The only difference I see is that externals appear to only have 200 mb/s read/writes while internal have 500 mb/s! My current setup has about 90 mb/s each way, so there will be a difference, but if I invest this money, I want to make sure it is done right. Should I worry about speed? Should I worry about all these ssd problems? Which one: external or internal?

    2. This is the only other question I think seems relevant enough to be a deciding factor:
A lot of people are saying you need to reinstall windows onto the ssd, you can't clone it due to the way windows sets itself up. Now I have the install cd backups toshiba had me made when I turned on the computer and the serial, so there is no issue there. The question is, do i need to reinstall all my applications too? or can I just copy them? Let's just say I kinda *cough* borrowed *cough* some of them from the piratebay... (Adobe, cinema 4d)

Alright I'll stop talking now, I'm going on too long! Please let me know what you think, I greatly appreciate your answers!

EDIT: I lied, one last question! I'm thinking either Crucial M4 128GB or Intel 520 128GB. Price cap is about $160, but I can stretch if it means reliability. Any suggestions on the two above or another ssd?

However i still have a few clarifications I just need fixed:

I don't want the SSD to be portable at all. I wanted an external because I was worried about running out of space or all the BSOD's that I've been hearing about. So the plan was to keep the current HDD, but use an external to speed up games and not worry about losing anything important.

However, I've been talked out of that plan form the current responses, and am left with these questions:
    • Do I need to reinstall windows? Or can I use a cloning tool? (Side note: is this what is causing the BSOD's I'm hearing about?)
    • I understand that an SSD's write ability eventually fades away. How long are we talking here?! I don't want my computer to become a book in 2 years!
    • Recap: I have 2 HDD's. The one in my computer (559GB) and an external (375GB). The external is for recording ONLY.
      • If I play minecraft in the internal SSD, and use fraps from the ssd to record directly to the external drive, is it going to slow down minecraft while recording? Or will minecraft remain faster (in terms of load speed)
      • Would it be smart to use the current HDD as a back up drive by putting it in an external housing and making backups every week or month? Or should I be using it to store additional files not on the ssd? OR should I record/backup to the 559GB and use the 375GB to store additional files? (I know weird question)
    • Final question: Is there anything I should know in terms of setting up a SSD? Do I need to format it or can I install windows straight to it (or copy depending on your answer). Do I need to do something with my bios or change a windows setting? Can I just plug the ssd into the spot where my HDD is or do I need a special cable?
Thanks so much for the replies guys! I know I have a lot of questions, but I want to make sure I'm getting the correct information here, as messing this up could cause a massive issue!
