It saddens me to see mod developers say that they only satisfaction they can get out of their mods is some ad revenue or donations on the side. Apparently gratitude means nothing to these people, nor does simple enjoyment.

Based upon these simple facts, why would anyone want to support a developer who clearly sees the people using their mods as nothing but a source of some monetary gain?

These mod/map/texpack dev's only do it so they can earn a little back from the time they take to make them, and if you don't have the patience to wait five seconds for a download, you don't deserve to download it.

Back in my day, making game mods was called a hobby. If hobbies deserve payment for the time you spend on them, I demand money for playing video games.

Putting ads on your site isn't making money off your mod. Putting ads on your site is turning your customers into a product that you sell to advertisers via site traffic.

Do you really want to support a developer who will sell you like a slave?

I am really disappointed in Notch because he made it free now, which gives the access to the
source code, which can be used wrongly. All he wanted, was that the code wouldnt go waste, so
the People that really wants to help with Minecraft could actually get their mods ingame in a easier way.
But no, now we will get low quality mods, because all the stupid kids went to cry to his blog.

    There's nothing wrong with open-source.

There is nothing wrong with open-source persay, but you're perfectly fine with someone with zero accountability (since there is no unified code repository) making a mod that slips code into Minecraft that contacts a server while exploiting faults in Java to then grant access to your system? Yeah, nothing wrong with that I suppose.

Try and diagnose what might be the problem. Best to start with:

    1. Verify the following works:
    A) Fresh Minecraft Client
    :cool.gif: Fresh Minecraft Server

If this works, try the next step. Since no one seems to be able to duplicate the EoS error with this configuration, this should work.

    2. Add your old world to the new server. If this brings back the EoS error, your world was corrupted. If not, proceed to the next step.

    3. Install client texture pack. If THIS causes problems, it may be due to a non-updated texture pack.

    4. If you've made it this far, things are working again and you probably won't post here again, since no one ever thanks those who offer helpful support. We're used to it.

Most people against licensing the source code seem to miss one important aspect of modding. Sure, modding is all fine and dandy when people play by the rules, but people have and will create mods that act as system backdoors. Java is by no means an iron fortress, and giving people access to the source code for your own creation, only to hear that people are getting hacked due to mods they're using, isn't a very good thing for your business.

I'm perfectly fine with a licensing fee required to obtain the source code, but make it a small one. Hell, most game developers now-a-days don't even like modders, let alone embrace them, and here is a developer willing to give not just an SDK, but full-on source code, and people are still spitting in his face.

    Talk about entitled.

If anything is going to ruin Minecraft, it is this loud vocal minority exemplified by this thread.

posted a message on Notch decides not to add a mod API
Personally I won't use any mods on my server that aren't running through some sort of API. I'm not going to modify a program and then run potentially unsecured code on my servers. I'll wait until a modding API is released, or I just won't use mods. The vanilla game is decent without them anyways.

This is the quickest way to fill a basin - the creation of water sources will cascade and fill the whole thing.
Unfortunately, that only works on the bottom layer... For deeper lakes, I'd suggest filling them in so they're shallow, then digging the bottom out once it's filled with water?

This is the best way to do it. Start with the top layer fuily finished, then dig down. Otherwise, you're gonna have flow problems.

posted a message on how is "mob" pronounced?
Words change with time. While the original term may have been shorthand for "mobile", if anyone were to refer to a monster/npc/creep/creature in a game as a "mobile" they'd probably get punched in the face and told to get back to their mainframe.

Along those same lines, anyone telling me that they accidentally pulled a pack of "mobes" would probably get punched in the face by those "mawbs", laughed at by me, and left to die.

Wonder if you'll take 2 weeks off and enjoy a game rather than complain about it.

I more enjoy finding dungeons barely below ground, covered in sand. Can find them from maps or just walking around pretty easily.

posted a message on Minecraft crashes to black screen of death.
Try making your bat file the following line instead of the one for the previous thread (that one was customized for the specific user's system).

    java -Xmx512M -Xms256M -jar minecraft.exe

Even if you had done 768M and the game crashed, it looks like even that could have exceeded the available memory.

In addition, make sure your view distance/fog is set to a low setting, if not the lowest. Less fog = more blocks = more memory used.
