Unless your constructions is restricted to one block wide you can simply put a track switch in your lower track. One way would lead in a small spiral to the upper rail.

Alternatively, if you're using the Better Than Wolves mod you could build a vertical elevator to get something similar like in your picture

Other than that it's probably a circle around him with the reasoning that they wouldn't dare shooting at him like that as they would kill their buddies if they miss. But that's basing on the assumption that they wouldn't do that, which is not given in the context.
