I had found a desert temple, and, although I wasn't exactly a newbie, I was still a little sloppy with my controls. I went into the treasure room, and... er... accidentally touched the pressure plate.
I died.
The good part is that I got back in time to retrieve my stuff, which, suprisingly, along with the chest loot, hadn't been destroyed.
I don't know about strongholds/dungeon spawners, but I've seen the abandoned mineshafts as once having miners in them, but they either fled or died when the spiders infested the mines.
