That is probably why it is not working because according to Minecraft it thinks your are using "Operating System: Windows XP (x86) version 5.1".
What if you try running Minecraft in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3), by right clicking on Minecraft.exe, then click properties, go to the tab labeled "Compatibility", check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:", and in the drop down menu choose "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)"; If that doesn't work try choosing "Windows 7".
I used to get that error too but what solved it for me was I restarted my router and my modem. Usually this error occurs because there is a firewall blocking Minecraft from communicating with the Minecraft servers.Another thing to check is when you clicked play to play Minecraft did you click "Play" or "Play Offline" if you clicked play offline make sure your connected to the internet if you aren't restart your Minecraft launcher.
For me it was a firewall in my modem (yes some ISPs are weird and put firewalls in their modems) that was blocking Minecraft sometimes.
EDIT:
I forgot to mention this probably because I was tiered when I wrote this...you may also want to make sure that the Minecraft servers are not down when you are trying to join/login to a server, you can check this here: http://xpaw.ru/mcstatus/.

Minecraft crashes in the recipe book mod for 1.5.2, it crashes when i try to open the book. i am using minecraftforge-universal-1.5.2-7.8.0.686. it says shutting internal server then it disappears and it stays like it until i close it.
