I usually bring water buckets to cover up lava pools.
I usually strip mine at Y:12. I don't do the trick where you mine two blocks below that. I'm going to test efficiency on other mining methods though. I might just go from bedrock and mine out every single block up to Y:16. Not sure how efficient that will be.

How active can you be on this server?: It depends on my schedule. Most likely 2 hours a week at minimum. It will be a lot more than that most weeks though.
