While I do feel its stupid of them to sue them for naming a game *scroll* (unless ofc everything in the game is a replica of the elder scroll games as well and theres no reason to call it scroll at all except that they saw that name) I think notch should have taken it more seriously than challenging them to a game of quake 3... seriously dude law suits are serious and could destroy minecraft if they succeed, don't take the **** out of it
if i recall, daggerfall isnt bethesdas. its a very old game, that most certainly predates bethesda. i cant remember correctly, but if i had to guess, it would be interplays game, since thats where bethesda originated from.
you would think that the entire Elder Scrolls series would have been shipped over to Black Isle (also spun off of interplay), since thats more down their lane than it was bethesdas.
They might have been able to get the names though, its hard to tell, since alot of copyrights were lost when interplay died out completely.

it essentially said the Bethesda bought ALL rights to the
"Fallout" name and all materials, and Interplay had given up all
claims.
So it's Interplay who is trying to get money out of "Fallout" that
Bethesda is making out of newer (Bethesda branded) releases of Fallout
games.

If the statement by coldbladed is true then it seems the US is the only market that has any value for curse.
Taking the statement as it is, the issue appears not to be that the prizes cannot be offered to non-US citizens but that curse was unwilling to give the same level of time, effort, and investment to other nations.
This says to me that I am worth less than as US citizen and gives plenty of opportunity to those who like to make anti US comments which solve nothing and make the situation worse.
If curse are faced with this issue again it may be best to simply not run a promotion at all as it may well anger more potential customers than it brings in which is never a good idea.
If we were to offer it to even one non-US country all that red tape would have to be repeated, weird tax fees would arise, and a handful of European countries would require us to pay tons of extra taxes and regulatory fees to offer a contest to their residents. Additionally, some countries just outright make it impossible to run contests.

I've worked in pharma trademark testing and spent much time in the USPTO trademark database. Unless it already registered Scrolls on its own, I doubt Bethesda has much of a case. Consider two proprietary insulin pens from different manufacturers: Flexpen and Kwikpen. They share a suffix, and co-exist. Does Bethesda also own Elder? How about The, or Roman numerals? There are myriad game titles that share words (e.g., War, Dark, Red, Home, Total, Tycoon, etc.). That's the great thing about words: when you put two or more together, you modify their meaning.
