Huh? Hasn't it been that cactus can't grow next to blocks since cactus was first added? -

Aug 14, 2012D3matt posted a message on Minecraft Surpasses 7 Million SalesMakes me wish I owned shares of Mojang. It's crazy the potential growth and profits of indie games. Minecraft literally started from nothing, 0$, and turned into a $200m+ game. (Assuming approximately $20 average sales and 10m purchases between Xbox and PC, not counting expenses). Even if you count Notch's PC, electricity bill, etc. for the initial costs, that's some insane growth right there. Minecraft 360 was profitable in less than 24 hours.Posted in: News

Jul 22, 2012D3matt posted a message on Lawsuit Filed Against Mojang - This Time, For Obscure PatentHis "view of the situation" is so pathetically generic one can hardly call him anything but a patent troll. 20 years is a silly amount of time for a software patent, especially considering it's basically patenting an ENTIRE BRANCH OF SOFTWARE THEORY. Further, why haven't all the other thousands of programs using far more invasive DRM that falls under this been sued yet? And where does minecraft tie serial keys to specific computers? It doesn't.Posted in: News
There have been entire defenses built around lack of prior enforcement of a patent or other IP. That was the reason why Bethesda sued mojang, because they couldn't not enforce it. I fail to see why these guys should get any money when they have done such a ****-poor job protecting their patents that almost every program ever created uses it. -
Jul 22, 2012D3matt posted a message on Lawsuit Filed Against Mojang - This Time, For Obscure PatentIt's worth noting that even if Mojang loses it's unlikely it'll do them any serious damage. As an indie dev team, their overhead costs are very slim compared to larger software houses, and with the continuing success of both MC and MCX360, as well as the presales of their other games, their income so far outstrips their expenses that they could sue them for their net worth and they'd be back up and running within a week.Posted in: News

Like I said, judging whether the law (or in this case the patent) is itself illegal. I'm honestly not sure how their patents haven't fallen through yet. -

First off, apple is not my "beloved" to any extent. Secondly, "slide to unlock" is much more commonly known and any one else using it almost certainly took inspiration from Apple. On the other hand, this company and its patent are so obscure that it's reasonable to assume (most) of these companies came up with the same idea on their own. Plus, I don't even know where Uniloc's anti-piracy fingerprinting falls into minecraft, seeing as it has no anti-piracy technology.Quote from OliTheG
1) It's ridiculous that this is being played off as ridiculous because the patent isn't understood by the average gamer.
2) You say it's "awful" that a company is suing another for something silly, and for something it has actually developed? Yeh, well how about your beloved apple? They abuse the legal progress. The last time I checked, they didn't invent sliding doors, but still tried to get the Galaxy Nexus banned for having a slide to unlock feature. They come up with a stupid lawsuit for a generalised patent (e.g. something that is phone shaped) force the temporary banning of its opponents, and then delay the court case as long as they can. Normally get laughed out of court, and then carry on. And this is from Steve Jobs, the man who always "promoted" innovation? Nearly all new apple features are 100% rip offs (including pure code) of other people's work.
tl;dr - If you are reading this, why do you think you have the intellect to comment on a legal patent issue?

Right, because their copyright is so highly specific, Mojang just be evil for wanting to protect computers! leik zomgz! In fact there's little way they could legally know if their patent is being violated, seeing as minecraft is technically closed source, especially the login server software. The fact that they've sued 70-something companies tells me that they've deliberately created the most vague patent possible for the express purpose of sueing people who came up with the same idea that also works. It's the equivalent of the IEEE deciding to sue people for using wireless encryption.Quote from XavierHorovitz
I love how biased the title of the thread is. Mojang could very well be the bad guys here, even if they didn't mean to be. You never know.
Their website states that they're "in the business of developing big ideas". If that's the case, why don't they sell their ideas instead of letting them remain obscure and unknown? Then they list on their website some of the major lawsuits as a source of pride, right alongside vague references to their anti-piracy patent and where it's applicable. And that's not the only page. Almost every page has references to them being lawsuit-happy idiots. -
May 17, 2012D3matt posted a message on HungerCraft vs RMCT Match Tomorrow!Team hunger games? That's pretty much the most pointless thing ever. The whole point of the hunger games is that it's every man for himself and only one can win. How is this different than any other pvp tournament, other than that it's riding the hunger games bandwagon?Posted in: News

They released the raw data, go look for yourself and see just how vague the information is. I guarantee you 100% even you couldn't find your own server in that data. -

I really hope that's some sort of troll post or you just lost all credibility as a server host.

Unless your VPS is connected to a fiber channel SAN, no. I'd look at remote storage providers rather than webhosting, they are the ones who will have the high-throughput storage you need for high-speed SQL.

I think I might just make it into a CC + RP2 server. There are very few of those around, and the ones that are all have terrible reliability and I think I could bring good to that community.
