posted a message on Planet Explorers vs. StarForge
Any backers/players of either project here? The Planet Explorers Kickstarter is coming to a close in a few short hours, so I decided to go with that over buying into StarForge's alpha on Steam, at least for now. I get the impression that there's not much to do in StarForge quite yet, and the world and creatures in Planet Explorers seem somehow more compelling and focused.

Both projects have a lot of potential (and I think there are some other similar ones out there--Yogventures sort of counts, I guess). I'm still not sure that the Minecraft-style formula translates well to non-blocky building and terraforming, but hopefully the other features and design/building capabilities make up for it.

I played to about 40% last summer after acquiring it during a Steam sale. I came back to it this summer, and I'm at about 60%. For me, JC2 is the rare perfect game. I love that it subverts the big dumb over-the-top action movie (not my favorite genre) by putting it in a big smart over-the-top action game--complete with hilarity and satire--that artfully enables a constant barrage of fluid, rapid-fire stunts. The game world is so well designed that stopping to take a breather is also rewarding in its own right. All I want from JC3 is more of everything.

I'd love TES:VI to be set in a more unique region, like Morrowind, instead of the more vanilla/generic fantasy settings of the last two games. Skyrim was an improvement over Oblivion (aside from the Nords, I rather liked the world), but I'm way bored of medieval castles and dragons. I'm sure Bethesda is doing things most people want, but I wish people weren't so in love with familiarity.

I'd say Wasteland 2 and another Shadowrun game, but we're getting those thanks to Kickstarter. I also would have said Syndicate 3, but that turned out to be a stupid disaster for anyone who enjoyed the first two. Dungeon Keeper 3 would indeed be fantastic, but in the meantime I guess there's Towns and the forthcoming Nekro. I'd also dig Freelancer 2 if it ever happens.

On topic, Steam is indeed very great. I don't really feel a lot of performance issues of this 'large program running in the background', although that's probably just my computer.

IIRC, Steam used to use about as much memory as the average browser. I don't know about you, but I generally close unneeded programs if I'm planning to run a game that demands a lot of system resources. It's down considerably from what it once was, but it's still occasionally prone to memory leaks. Granted, my machine is almost four years old at this point.

I used Steam for HL2 back in 2004, and then didn't use it again until just a few years ago (for Fallout 3 activation, I think). A site-wide summer camp sale (or something) sucked me in to a point where I actually started buying through the service. I'm not ecstatic about everything it does--janky offline mode, having a large program running in the background when I'm trying to maximize performance--but compared to Origin, Steam is a very gentle lover.

2004 was so long ago that I completely forgot about Steam and lost access to my original account--which theoretically means I can't legitimately run my copy of HL2 anymore.

Aside from that, Steam has probably helped facilitate the growth of DLC for PC, and since DLC is often a craptastic cash-grab, that's a negative for me even if I can't blame Valve for the greedy hijinks of other publishers.

Arx Fatalis. It was rated fairly well, but the timing of its release was poor (around the time of Morrowind). It did a few things better than Morrowind, and, like Morrowind, set a distinct mood that subsequent RPGs, TES or otherwise, haven't really been able to replicate.

It's been a week, so I guess bump. No one else has any interest in this? I generally don't like to spam others with useless garbage; I really thought Lodestar would click for a lot of people here.

Meanwhile, Dead State--the zombie RPG and sister project to Age of Decadence--launched a Kickstarter and really thunderfarted its way out of the gate.

Dunno. I played the hell out of Counterstrike a decade ago, as well as the first MoH, but my taste for this style of game has waned. Partly, I view them as increasingly being games for teens, not adults. And partly, I'm not terribly impressed with the gameplay, as demonstrated by video. Additionally, the military recruitment connection is a turn-off.

I don't think I've purchased an Activision title since Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, so I don't really have any strong feelings about the publisher.

I did play it, and I'm not saying it doesn't call forth some thinking and emotion, I'm just saying it's not interactive. It's not underrated, it's at the correct rating with the correct amount of following.

Fire up Dear Esther again, and don't press any keys or touch your mouse. Once you're done scratching your head, look up the definition of interactive.

Although it initially reminded me of listening to Stephen King's 3D audio book The Mist (audio theater, really), it would have made a terrible film and an even crappier novel, as the experience depended on interactivity, a basic level of choice, and player-controlled pacing.

However, as stunning as it is to play once, it doesn't offer much in the way of re-playability, so I would call it overpriced at $10.

After not playing for a year, I've been reminded why Just Cause 2 is so freaking good.

I was scaling a towering, sheer cliff with my grappling hook when along came a helicopter wielding a minigun. Naturally, I grappled onto the helicopter to hijack it. The pilot lost control, and the helicopter began sliding down the cliff face sideways on its skids. Just as it was about to hit the ground, I managed to input the hijack key code, jump into the cockpit, straighten, and achieve lift.

The game makes all kinds of bad action movie moments possible without fully intending to, which makes finding them all the more awesome. I'm pretty bored of AAA titles, but Just Cause 3 might be the game that prompts me to build a new rig.
