Aug 18, 2011Craftmatic posted a message on What's Going On: Lawsuits, Creeper CarsBy that logic, Eldritch Interactive and Millenium Games (yes, who?), respectively the developer and publisher of The Scroll (1992), should have sued Bethesda when it released TES: Arena in 1994. I've worked in pharma trademark testing and spent much time in the USPTO trademark database. Unless it already registered Scrolls on its own, I doubt Bethesda has much of a case. Consider two proprietary insulin pens from different manufacturers: Flexpen and Kwikpen. They share a suffix, and co-exist. Does Bethesda also own Elder? How about The, or Roman numerals? There are myriad game titles that share words (e.g., War, Dark, Red, Home, Total, Tycoon, etc.). That's the great thing about words: when you put two or more together, you modify their meaning.Posted in: News

Jul 3, 2011Craftmatic posted a message on C418's album on sale!Yeah, supporting musicians in any way is for stupid noobs. Look, Notch and co. does not = C418. C418 is just a guy, asking 3 or 4 bucks for an album with additional tracks compared to what you'll find in your Minecraft folder. But I dunno man, maybe that's just a corporate lie perpetrated by the man.Posted in: News

I'm a PC guy all day every day. My last console was a Super Nintendo, because I don't personally feel the need to buy a box every six years that duplicates the functionality of an all-purpose box I'm already building every four. Yes, console has become the bane of the PC gamer's existence over that last half-decade due to its negative influence on PC games, but Minecraft coming to Xbox isn't going to ruin Minecraft. PC games being ported to console is a good thing. It bucks the trend of developers making mush to better slide down the throats of console gamers with low expectations, and then delivering that same console mush to PC. The ongoing matter-of-course PC vs. console (vs. Wii) war of fanboys is getting tired. There's not much innovation going on in your mind if you find these kinds of black-and-white debates interesting. People choose different things, end of story.
I also highly doubt dedicated console players are going to have much of a presence on this forum. People who stick to consoles usually do so because they're after a simple, streamlined gaming experience. The way console has shaped games in the last several years is a pretty clear indication of that. Modding, servers, etc.--I don't think much of that will apply to them.
Mojang deserves every amount of success that comes its way. Keep in mind that Notch is a big fan of indie games. A console port being developed by a separate team is not going to change his sensibility.
Everyone loves Minecraft, and everyone should be able to play it. Let's not **** on something just because we like to think of ourselves as special little indie turds who like to keep everything pure and for ourselves. - To post a comment, please login.

Both projects have a lot of potential (and I think there are some other similar ones out there--Yogventures sort of counts, I guess). I'm still not sure that the Minecraft-style formula translates well to non-blocky building and terraforming, but hopefully the other features and design/building capabilities make up for it.

I'd say Wasteland 2 and another Shadowrun game, but we're getting those thanks to Kickstarter. I also would have said Syndicate 3, but that turned out to be a stupid disaster for anyone who enjoyed the first two. Dungeon Keeper 3 would indeed be fantastic, but in the meantime I guess there's Towns and the forthcoming Nekro. I'd also dig Freelancer 2 if it ever happens.

IIRC, Steam used to use about as much memory as the average browser. I don't know about you, but I generally close unneeded programs if I'm planning to run a game that demands a lot of system resources. It's down considerably from what it once was, but it's still occasionally prone to memory leaks. Granted, my machine is almost four years old at this point.

2004 was so long ago that I completely forgot about Steam and lost access to my original account--which theoretically means I can't legitimately run my copy of HL2 anymore.
Aside from that, Steam has probably helped facilitate the growth of DLC for PC, and since DLC is often a craptastic cash-grab, that's a negative for me even if I can't blame Valve for the greedy hijinks of other publishers.

Meanwhile, Dead State--the zombie RPG and sister project to Age of Decadence--launched a Kickstarter and really thunderfarted its way out of the gate.

I don't think I've purchased an Activision title since Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, so I don't really have any strong feelings about the publisher.

Fire up Dear Esther again, and don't press any keys or touch your mouse. Once you're done scratching your head, look up the definition of interactive.
Although it initially reminded me of listening to Stephen King's 3D audio book The Mist (audio theater, really), it would have made a terrible film and an even crappier novel, as the experience depended on interactivity, a basic level of choice, and player-controlled pacing.
However, as stunning as it is to play once, it doesn't offer much in the way of re-playability, so I would call it overpriced at $10.

Battlefield 3: apparently a slow paced thinking man's game.

I was scaling a towering, sheer cliff with my grappling hook when along came a helicopter wielding a minigun. Naturally, I grappled onto the helicopter to hijack it. The pilot lost control, and the helicopter began sliding down the cliff face sideways on its skids. Just as it was about to hit the ground, I managed to input the hijack key code, jump into the cockpit, straighten, and achieve lift.
The game makes all kinds of bad action movie moments possible without fully intending to, which makes finding them all the more awesome. I'm pretty bored of AAA titles, but Just Cause 3 might be the game that prompts me to build a new rig.
