You can use harvested logs in strategic places to keep leaves from decaying.

There seems to be a critical threshold for the size of the dark room. Too small and mobs will spawn rarely, or not at all. It also seems that they need to be taller that NxNx2, though I can't verify that. I hacked in a 25x25x1 square of tnt at roughly bedrock level and detonated it from the surface. I got LOTS of mob spawns in there, but the 100x100x2 room I constructed at surface level never spawned even one mob.

I have seen a lot of amazing things come out of the MC community, especially since the release of SMP. This, however, takes the cake, and it's no lie!

Was wondering if any of the Mod makers were considering an option for restricting/permitting Admin/Mod status via IP rather than user name? Might help for future situations where the MC.net is down like it is this weekend.

    Isn't it gray* ?

    Not if you're a yank.

    Or... a European.

Wait, which one do Americans USUALLY use? I find myself using both all the time. Sometimes in the same sentence.

grEy is how it's spelled in England, grAy is how it's spelled in America.. Apparently I DO remember things I learned in elementary school.

P.S. I have GrAy screen and I'm running Nvidia

Yeah, I'll try. We can just see what happens I guess. I fully expect to be turned down flat though, heh!

/sigh.. Nope. Just tried leaf, and it's a no go as well. It has specific instructions for how to port forward, that require access to the router as well. I give up. There seems to be no good way to do this, which is, I guess, a good thing. If this were possible, I imagine that trojan's and the like would be 100 times more dangerous! Thanks for the suggestions folks, but It looks like it's impossible, short of coding my own thing, and I despise coding......

Tried Hamachi already, that exact thread actually :biggrin.gif: . Doesn't work for me. After some searching around, I found out that that method would only work for people that have UPNP, as Hamachi will use it without informing you, and open ports on your router automatically. As I have no UPNP access, this wouldn't work for me. I also tried Tunngle, and we found that none of us could see each other in the lobbies, nor could we connect, regardless of who hosted. Iplop1, do you know of a free proxy/server that we could ssh to? I'm aware of putty, and have seen it mentioned multiple times while searching for a solution to this problem.

Doesn't work. Hamachi now charges for virtual port forwarding. If it's working for you, you already have UPNP on your router, and Hamachi is just forwarding ports automatically via your router.

Well, I normally connect via the dorm's WiFi. I guess I could NOT eat ramen for the next week, and go buy some cat-5 instead, just to test it (and likely fail there too). You gotta remember, no matter HOW I connect to the network, it's not my network. I can't access any router, anywhere in the line. If I purchased a router (well, if someone did anyway...) I would STILL need to access the other routers or whatever is set up to protect the network as a whole.

Outbound connections work just fine. For example, I can play Starcraft 2 just fine over Battle.net, and Wow as well. If, however, I want to host a server, I'm going to need a VPN or proxy of some sort, so I can connect to it, and then people can connect to it's IP:Port and it'll forward the information around to whoever needs it..

Where would we hook it up? We're in a dorm... The only internet allowed here is part of the campus' network.

@Soji: Well, I'm half a continent from home, and most of my friends here at school are too. We're looking for a local solution, and thought, perhaps, someone here might have some ideas.. If we can figure something out, it might help the MC community at large.

@Memexus: Yeah, that's the basics of our issue. Hamachi used to work for issues like this, but it seems they started charging for the port forwarding tunnel scheme :sad.gif:

Is anyone familiar with VPNs? I understand there might be some solutions there, but I don't know...

Won't work. I don't have UPNP or NAT or anything like that.. I can't set ports at all, and they are ALL blocked by the school's admin.

So here's the dealio. I'm a student, and we have a very restrictive network policy here. I can play minecraft smp, but I REALLY want to be able to host my own server, if only for my buds to play on. Does anyone know of a free (remember, I'm a broke student) proxy service or anything else that'll let me fake an open port that my friends can connect to? I have tried Hamachi (sp?) and it turns out that you have to pay for that specific feature.

Try to be specific, and use small words. :biggrin.gif:
